HOW DID WE GET THERE? • desire for a Dutch post-production and viewing facility for Higher Education • SURFnet & Waag Society teamed up to get Zaxtar 4K Video Server & Eyevis 4K screen EYE-LCD6400-4K • it turned out to be too difficult to make it work (!) • fortunately there was a working option: NTT 4K JPG 2000 decoder by KEIO University 6 EYE-LCD6400-4K

FINDINGS • we need strict technical standards for viewing conditions • it’s hard to find material that will satisfy & convince makers and what makers like, is often different from scientists • network-to-venue is still a bottle-neck • problems with the sound: selection of surround channels • you need a lot of co-production • with a lot of support you can get things done 14

- CineGrid @ HAFF My name is Frank Kresin, been to CineGrid for the fourth time now, seen it grow My personal goal: how to make this technology useful for society & the arts Coincided with the decision of SURFnet to build a 4K production facility
- Holland Animation Film Festival production - started with a dream by Robin Noorda: networked premiere of their film: Red End - initial enthusiasm by USA & Japan - turned out to be too complicated, network-wise: end-point - lesser goal: 4K premiere of Red End - with an additional workshop for animation artists
- Results: - turned out to be film block of 7 films, totaling 70 minutes new material (!) - workshop by 10 participants - over 200 visitors at mayor Dutch Animation Film Festival - discussion amongst 11 film makers, venue holders, film funds & Film & TV academy - lots of enthusiasm
- Workshop - Hands-on workshop for animation film makers - By Robin Noorda and Bethany de Forest - 10 animation film makers - using photo still camera's (12MP) - experiments with lenses, material, effects, layers & post production - final post-production on SURFnet & Waags production facility
- ‘What the 4K!: Films’ consisted of the following films: Leader Holland Animation Film Festival 2009, van Motomichi Nakamura – 38” Red Thread 4K Workshop van Robin Noorda & Bethany de Forest - 3’ Red-end and the Seemingly Symbiotic Society, Robin Noorda & Bethany de Forest - 15’ Chase (teaser), Adriaan Lokman - 1’30” Handelingen, Maarten Isaäk de Heer - 12’ Hemels Licht, Jan Karel Lameer - 5’ Not a Test, Jan Karel Lameer - 2’ #37, Joost Rekveld - 30’
- Pannel reactions: - public: wauw - film makers: enthusiastic, new medium - venue directors: no real driver. no content, no new value - film funds: skeptical. it's all about the story, not technology - NFTA: this is the future, at least for (post-)production. we need a pipeline - good discussion; food for more

- Future: BUT we have to take the people who make things VERY seriously they know what they want and they know how to make things inspiration & facilitation is key - if so, we can bring this forward
