With the increasing adoption of NoSQL data base systems like MongoDB or CouchDB more and more applications store structured data according to a non-relational, document oriented model. Exposing this structured data as Linked Data is currently inhibited by a lack of standards as well as tools and requires the implementation of custom solutions. While recent efforts aim at expressing transformations of such data models into RDF in a standardized manner, there is a lack of approaches which facilitate SPARQL execution over mapped non-relational data sources. With SparqlMap-M we show how dynamic SPARQL access to non-relational data can be achieved. SparqlMap-M is an extension to our SPARQL-to-SQL rewriter SparqlMap that performs a (partial) transformation of SPARQL queries by using a relational abstraction over a document store. Further, duplicate data in the document store is used to reduce the number of joins and custom optimiza-tions are introduced. Our showcase scenario employs the Berlin SPARQL Benchmark (BSBM) with different adap-tions to a document data model. We use this scenario to demonstrate the viability of our approach and compare it to different MongoDB setups and native SQL.

This year I had the opportunity to give a presentation at the World Bank in Washington DC during one of their "brown bag sessions", focused on Privacy, Drones and IoT.
The World Bank is an organization that works worldwide with a wide range of projects, including some initiatives connected with new technologies, and every time, they should evaluate different risks involved, including privacy risks.
The purpose of the presentation was to understand the concept of ‘privacy’ and its different meanings worldwide, how to define the privacy framework and assess the risks arising from the use of new technologies such as drones or IoT, and introduce the Privacy Impact Assessment as an effective tool that we can use in any jurisdiction.
I am going to share some thoughts of these broad and complex chapters that I had to sum up within one hour in this presentation!

A well-designed IT Service Delivery Model is critical to achieving success in IT management and operations. Many IT organizations focus on optimizing their technology assets -- the infrastructure and applications. However, in our experience, business value is achieved most effectively when technology assets and the IT service delivery model are integrated and work together seamlessly.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Machine Learning: Are You Ready?SilverTech
Long dismissed as the realm of sci-fi, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning have finally arrived and their potential to disrupt every industry is quickly becoming apparent. Though they work in tandem, there is a distinction to be made between the two; AI is the ability of machines to mimic human intelligence, while machine learning is the ability of computers to learn from gathered data. Despite Elon Musk’s cautions, over the next two years AI will be pervasive in everything from household appliances to digital assistants, and yes, even your website and content!
The Big Picture | Augmented and Virtual Reality – an alternative platform for...LearningandTeaching
Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) have the potential to have a significant impact in many industries, including the content and delivery of education services. Recent technical advancements and global investment in VR ($4b since 2010!) have accelerated the practical uses of VR far beyond flight simulators and gaming. But is it really an alternative platform for education?

A tale of scale & speed: How the US Navy is enabling software delivery from l...sonjaschweigert1
Rapid and secure feature delivery is a goal across every application team and every branch of the DoD. The Navy’s DevSecOps platform, Party Barge, has achieved:
- Reduction in onboarding time from 5 weeks to 1 day
- Improved developer experience and productivity through actionable findings and reduction of false positives
- Maintenance of superior security standards and inherent policy enforcement with Authorization to Operate (ATO)
Development teams can ship efficiently and ensure applications are cyber ready for Navy Authorizing Officials (AOs). In this webinar, Sigma Defense and Anchore will give attendees a look behind the scenes and demo secure pipeline automation and security artifacts that speed up application ATO and time to production.
We will cover:
- How to remove silos in DevSecOps
- How to build efficient development pipeline roles and component templates
- How to deliver security artifacts that matter for ATO’s (SBOMs, vulnerability reports, and policy evidence)
- How to streamline operations with automated policy checks on container images

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
