Church Hierarchy
By Toyosi Akinmboni
What is the Hierarchy
• In the Catholic Church the Hierarchy is like a
table that shows the power or the most
importance of the people in the Catholic
Community. First come the Pope then the
Cardinals,
The Pope
• The Pope is the most important person in the
Catholic Church. Pope Francis is the head of
approximately 1.2 Billion Catholics all around
the world. All of the Popes were successors to
St. Peter who was the first Pope. The Pope has
the power to change anything to the Catholic
Church.
Cardinals
• The Cardinals are “Princes of The Church”
appointed by the Pope. The Cardinals have a
very important role to play. When it is time to
choose a new Pope, the Cardinals will vote for
who they want the new Pope to be.
Bishops
• In the Catholic Church the Arch-Bishops and
Bishops come underneath the Cardinals. A
bishops oversees the diocese which is a
collection of the local parishes. Each Bishop
must visit the Holy Father every five years, and
give his report on his particular diocese.
Priests
The basic job of the Priest is to proclaim the
word of God. This can be done in a number of
ways. The priest has to spend time preparing
and then performing the sacraments- Eucharist,
Reconciliation, Baptism, Funerals, marriages.
