Christmas in Portugal is centered around family tradition and religious observance. Families gather on Christmas Eve for the consoada, a feast of boiled cod, vegetables and desserts before attending midnight mass. Children believe in Pai Natal (Father Christmas) and leave their shoes by the fireplace to receive gifts either Christmas Eve or morning. The most common decorations are the presépio, a nativity scene, and the Christmas tree.
