CHRISTMAS IN SPAIN
Spain is a Catholic country where religion is very
important for all the people. They also celebrate the
Christmas, but it’s completely different celebration
than in Poland. In Spain during Christmas is much
more joy and public feasting on the streets than in
others countries.
PREPARATIONS
Preparations for Christmas start eariel, when many
Spanish people are focused on shopping, decorating
houses and preparing tradicional dishes.City streets
during Christmas days are drowning in decorations,
lights and others Christmas symbols.
CRIB
Christmas nativity scene is a very important symbol
of Christmas in Spain. This representation of the birth of
Jesus can be seen both in the squares of large cities and
small towns, as well as the entrances to houses and
shop windows.
CHRISTMAS LOTTERY
This day is very important because of draw for the
Christmas lottery. This lottery is the oldest and also the
largest lottery in Spain. It is a tradition in which almost
every Spanish person is involved, because it gives the
illusion of winning a million euro.
Christmas dishes
The traditional Spanish Christmas dinner is 'Pavo Trufado
de Navidad' which is Turkey stuffed with truffles. In Galicia
the most popular meal for Christmas Eve is seafood. This can
be all kinds of different seafood, from shellfish to small edible
crabs.
Christmas Eve
Christmas Eve (Nochebuena) is most important family
gathering of the year. In the evening people often meet early
for a few drinks with friends then return home to enjoy a meal
with the family. Children may receive a small gift on
Christmas Eve but the day for presents is 6th January,
Epiphany, when the Three Kings bring gifts for the children.
Midnight celebration
After the midnight service, people walk through the streets
carrying torches, playing guitars and beating on tambourines
and drums. One Spanish saying : 'Tonight is the good night
and it is not meant for sleeping!'
December 28th is 'Day of the Innocent Saints' and is very
like April Fools Day in the UK. People try to trick each other
into believing silly stories and jokes. Newspapers and TV
stations also run silly stories. If you trick someone, you can
call them 'innocent, innocent'.
