Successful free to play games are a brew of persuasion techniques designed to achieve fast engagement. Here’s a short list and lots of examples of the most notorious persuasive methods and psychological tactics that are used in games you play and love.

“Leaderboards, badges, agency” – these words are meaningless on their own. This presentation aims to give the “why” and “how” of using behavioural game theory in education, while avoiding psych jargon like “behavioural game theory”. By the end you’ll understand that humans make strange decisions. You’ll also walk away with a toolbox of questions and techniques to apply during design to improve what most learning wants to do anyway: change learner behaviour.

Reality is Broken: GDC08 Rant by Jane McGonigalJane McGonigal
As game designers, we own more emotional bandwidth, we occupy more brain cycles, and we make more people happy than any other platform or content in the world. Reality is fundamentally broken, and we have a responsibility as game designers to fix it. We have a responsibility as the smartest people in the world, the people who understand how to make systems that make people feel engaged, successful, happy, and completely alive, and we have the knowledge and the power to invent systems that make reality work better. We have the responsibility to take what we’ve learned as an industry over the past 30 years and start making everyday life more like our games.
Players and Avatars: Against IdentificationMia Consalvo
Much study of MMOGs as well as other videogames presumes an affinity between players and their avatars. Gee has developed the concept of 'projective identity' and Bailensen, Yee and others have done extensive work exploring the Proteus effect, which suggests humans are deeply influenced by the avatars they choose, and likewise how such avatars become extensions of themselves in games and virtual spaces. Some of my own past work has explored how women strongly identify with female avatars, 'gender-swapping' at rates much lower than similar male players. Yet what of games that don't employ avatars, or rely on multiple or non-human avatars for players to employ? What of players who simply do not characterize game avatars as extensions of themselves? How can we speak of identification such instances? Is it still a useful concept to investigate?
This talk reviews some of my past research about players, identity and avatars, to offer a starting point for argument. But the heart of the talk explores instances of games where avatar presentation and use depart from our traditional conceptualizations --either by their absence or their opposition to humanoid facsimiles. By doing so this talk challenges game studies' easy reliance on avatars as proxies for identity in games, and asks what happens when players fail to use or access such embodiments in their gameplay. It suggests alternative ways to understand player agency and identification in games, and moves beyond avatars as the principle means for doing so.

The Golden Gamers: A 65+ Library Gaming GroupJohn Pappas
"The Golden Gamers" Equitable and Inclusive Gaming Events for the Elderly presented by John Pappas
Tabletop board gaming is a creative, multi-generational, social and fun activity. While there is a broad swatch of recreational activities for the 65+ crowd, generally gaming is left out. Conversations with the Senior Activities Board of the Upper Darby Libraries confirmed this with traditional video games providing an engaging experience but accessibility tends to be a challenge due to physical determinants (carpal tunnel, poor eyesight, arthritis) and experiential (with a large learning curve required for many video games). Tabletop board games provide an experience that is interactive, social, cognitive and engaging. With concerns over Alzheimer's and social isolation, this is an important subject for many seniors. The Primos Library instituted a series of programs "Tabletop Gaming at the Library" (intergenerational, weekly), The Game Designer's Guild (monthly, intergenerational) and the "Golden Gamers" (65+, Monthly-Weekly dependant upon interest) each providing a gaming experience for burgeoning and experienced gamers of any age.
In this talk, Pappas will discuss the initial planning, marketing, collection development and community engagement elements of the series as well as successes and challenges. A large portion of the talk will be on game selection for this age group including issues such as the level of social interaction inherent in the game, types of games, levels of complexity and iconography.
Skill games or mind games are experiencing significant popularity in the gaming industry, particularly in the present situation of work-from-home, allowing people to enjoy a happy time.
Apart from helping as a real stress-buster amidst a lack of socializing possibilities, such games can enhance several crucial skills.
The cognitive abilities of geriatric people significantly improve while the team-building ability, among others, gets improved among young adults through skill or mind games.
The observation skills, communication ability, concentration, attention, analytical ability, teamwork, among many other attributes, get significantly enhanced by participating in skill or mind games.
Combining an exercise regime with brain games while staying at home can extend crucial benefits to compensate for the losses due to isolated stay at home during the pandemic situation.
For people, who feel depressed while working at home, such mind games or skill games can be excellent to solve stress-related issues leading to a healthy and happy life.
So, Keep Your Work From Home Interesting With The Best Mind / Skill Games.
Such skills are sharpening strategic thinking, creativity, developing friendship, among several other crucial skills. Young people can have enhanced perseverance, resilience, and communication ability, essential for a balanced personality.
Pig-faced Orcs: What designers can learn from old-school role-playing gamesJamie Reffell
Can designers learn anything from old-school role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons and Traveller? Sure!
Designers of all kinds are getting comfortable applying principles of game design to non-game applications. Many of those principles date back to the early days of role-playing games, from Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson's first edition of D&D in 1974 to less well-known games like Runequest and Traveller. Game designers have been revisiting these early works and extracting wisdom from them, and I'd like to bring some of those lessons to the user experience community.
In this deliciously nerdy talk, I'll present user-experience lessons from old-school gaming, including the role of showmanship in constructing an experience, how imperfections and missing pieces can increase engagement, and the difference between sandbox and railroad designs.
Talk given as IA Summit 11 in Denver CO.

Enterprise Excellence is Inclusive Excellence.pdfKaiNexus
Enterprise excellence and inclusive excellence are closely linked, and real-world challenges have shown that both are essential to the success of any organization. To achieve enterprise excellence, organizations must focus on improving their operations and processes while creating an inclusive environment that engages everyone. In this interactive session, the facilitator will highlight commonly established business practices and how they limit our ability to engage everyone every day. More importantly, though, participants will likely gain increased awareness of what we can do differently to maximize enterprise excellence through deliberate inclusion.
What is Enterprise Excellence?
Enterprise Excellence is a holistic approach that's aimed at achieving world-class performance across all aspects of the organization.
What might I learn?
A way to engage all in creating Inclusive Excellence. Lessons from the US military and their parallels to the story of Harry Potter. How belt systems and CI teams can destroy inclusive practices. How leadership language invites people to the party. There are three things leaders can do to engage everyone every day: maximizing psychological safety to create environments where folks learn, contribute, and challenge the status quo.
Who might benefit? Anyone and everyone leading folks from the shop floor to top floor.

Implicitly or explicitly all competing businesses employ a strategy to select a mix
of marketing resources. Formulating such competitive strategies fundamentally
involves recognizing relationships between elements of the marketing mix (e.g.,
price and product quality), as well as assessing competitive and market conditions
(i.e., industry structure in the language of economics).
