The Patriots were the Americans who rebelled against British control during the American Revolutionary War in the late 1700s. They declared independence from Britain in 1776 and used the slogan "No Taxation without Representation" to protest unfair taxation by the British Parliament. Famous Patriots included Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence, George Washington, the commander of American forces, and Benjamin Franklin, who helped organize the Continental Congress and negotiate the peace treaty after the war. Though at a disadvantage, the Patriots ultimately prevailed against the British and won independence for the United States.
2. WHO WERE THE PATRIOTS?
The Patriots were the Americans during the American
Revolutionary war. The Patriots rebelled against British
control, and in July of 1776 they declared us an
independent nation. The Patriots even had there own
slogan which was “No Taxation without Representation”
referring to the lack of fairness in the British Parliament.
The Patriots were active before The American Revolution
even begun. They were in groups such as the Son of
Liberty.
Patriots were very well educated and very wealthy usually.
In 200 historian Robert Calhoon estimated that 40-45 percent
of the White Men in the 13 colonies supported the Patriot
cause.

Thomas Jefferson- author of The Declaration of
Independence.
George Washington- was the commander in Chief in the
Continental army and first president of the United States.
Benjamin Franklin- organizer of Continental Congress and
helped organize the peace treaty at the end of the
American Revolution.
4. PATRIOTS IN THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION
As many people know, the Patriots defeated the Redcoats (the
name of the British troops) in the American Revolutionary war.
The American
Revolutionary war went on from April 19 1775 to September 3
1783. The war lasted 8 years, 4 months, 2 weeks and 1 day.
The disadvantages of the British were they only had 48,000
troops strong, had no major allies, and they trouble recruiting
for there army.
The Americans had significant disadvantages coming into the
war. They had no national government, no national army or
navy, no financial system, no banks, no established credit, and
no functioning government departments.
The Patriots had the disadvantage coming into the American
Revolutionary war, but they prevailed and won the war.
