Why Child Adversity?
• Child adversity has a negative long-term impact
on the health and wellbeing of the population.
• Early experiences, both positive and negative,
affect brain architecture, which provides the
foundation for future learning, emotional
development, behavior, and health.

chronic diseases, obesity, and substance abuse.

• Can’t simply argue the facts to change minds.

Butte County used the initial BRFSS ACEs findings
from the Center for Youth Wellness Hidden Crisis
report to inform their efforts.
• ACEs data provided the frame to talk about trauma
as a cross-sector and county-level issue.
• Educated county folks by leveraging existing
relationships under a low-hanging fruit mentality.
• Implemented trauma-informed activities.

Example county-level solutions to ACEs that helped
to create a baseline understanding about the issue:
• School districts adopted ACEs awareness resolutions.
• First 5 Commission put ACEs into their strategic plan.
• ACEs were incorporated into the Butte County Public
Health Department community improvement plan.
• Trauma 101 training with champion model.

Lead4Tomorrow Family Hui
• Parent Leadership grantee of the California
Department of Social Services, Office of Child
Abuse Prevention for the years 2016-2019.
• Used the Childhood Adversity and Resilience data
on kidsdata.org to determine where to focus
programming efforts and to allocate resources.
• Focus on San Joaquin, Imperial, and Colusa
counties, with the hope of reaching out to Kern
and Siskiyou in the future.

• Interested in ACEs after learning that odds of
experiencing serious injury in young adulthood
increased by ACE score.
• Created a screening tool that combined
traditional ACEs measures with urban ACEs.
• The screening tool helps to create prevention
