2. Social justice means that every person is
entitled to the same rights and services;
However social justice fail to recognize
children who are neglected and abused.
These children have no voice if we (society)
do not speak for them.
Children die from maltreatment everyday and
neglect associated with poverty leads to
children deaths. A cry for needed help and
services for the voiceless will draw attention
to the injustice these children encounter.
3. Who speaks for this child?
A baby early stage of development is strengthen
by the kind of care and stimulus he recieves.
Poor attachment and little interaction can affect
the childs’ brain and development.
4. Neglect can negatively affect a child's academic performance. Studies
have found that:
Children placed in out-of-home care because of abuse or neglect have
below-average levels of cognitive capacity, language development, and
academic achievement.
Neglected children demonstrated a notable decline in academic
performance upon entering junior high school.
Children who were physically neglected were found to have significantly
lower IQ scores at 24 and 36 months and the lowest scores on
standardized tests of intellectual functioning and academic achievement
in kindergarten when compared with children who had experienced
either no maltreatment or other forms of maltreatment.
Neglected children, when compared with nonmaltreated children, scored
lower on measures of overall school performance and tests of language,
reading, and math skills.
Neglected boys, but not girls, were found to have lower full-scale IQ
scores than physically abused and nonmaltreated children. 82

That is why it is so important to advocate for
the voiceless
6. The Child Abuse Prevention and
Treatment Act (CAPTA) provides a minimal definition for all child
maltreatment that focuses on
harm levels in lieu of specific factors or types. It defines child
maltreatment as, “any act or failure to
act on the part of a parent or caretaker, which results in death,
serious physical or emotional harm,
sexual abuse or exploitation, or any act or failure to act which
presents an imminent risk of harm” 42
U.S.C. A 5106g. State statutory definitions vary in specificity and
content.
