- Their mother and father died in a tragic accident one afternoon, when their canoe tipped over in the Zambeze river on their way home from working on their farm. When the boys came to the project they were living with their elderly aunt. The boys always stick together at the project and can always be found with a soccer ball at their feet.
- WhenSimao was a very young boy, his father was put in jail. When he was released he was never heard from again. His mother then became sick with a disease that caused her to become very mentally unstable. The villagers became concerned when she would always take Simao and his older brother into the bush or graveyards for days at a time. They feared for the safety of the children and decided to take the boys away from her. The boys currently live with their Aunt who is recovering from tuberculosis. Simao is a very polite and friendly boy and also quite the little dancer.
- Maria and her sister Amelia’s mother died when they were very young. They were living with their father, until he also died of malaria. Then they went to live with a distant relative, who was also caring for another orphaned girl, Beta, who is part of the meal program at Raio de Esperanca. One night during a heavy rainstorm their hut collapsed while the girls were inside. At this time Maria was very sick from malaria and noticably malnourished. The caregiver brought Maria and her sister Amelia to the project and she was able to receive treatment for malaria and was enrolled in our meal program. Maria is shown here with Beta.

- Lucas and his sister Sara are the newest additions to the meal program. Their mother is blind, and relies on Lucas to take her everywhere she needs to go. Sometimes she sells vegetables in the market and Lucas must sit with her all day to help her and make sure that she is receiving the correct money. He is a very shy boy and protective of his little sister. Before we built them a new hut, they had to walk 10 kilometers every Friday because traditionally blind people come to the markets on Fridays to beg.
