Chickenpox (also called varicella) is a
viral infection that causes fever and an
itchy rash with spots all over the body.
( itchy, blister-like rash. The rash
appears first on the chest, back,
and face, and then spreads
over the entire body.)

It’s very rare to have the chickenpox
infection more than once. And since the
chickenpox vaccine was introduced in the
mid-1990s, cases have declined.
• Causes
Chickenpox caused by the varicella-zoster
virus (VZV).

Chickenpox is a highly contagious disease.
A person with chickenpox is considered
contagious beginning 1 to 2 days before
