The case for speaking in tongues 7 – Corinthian Considerations.Dan Wooldridge
After far too long a wait this is finally finished. Years ago I was asked by a fellow preacher to write a book concerning the teaching and doctrine of the fullness of the Holy Spirit and the liberty of speaking in tongues.
It went on the back burner, I could never see the importance of published books and I'm still faintly bemused by the fact that I had a perfectly good set of working notes on the subject of "How to Say It" which was about the skill of putting a message together for effective preaching. Hardly anybody showed any interest in the working notes until another friend of mine published it in a hardback cover. I never cease to be amazed at the gullibility of us all who tend to look on the outside and not at the heart of the matter.
Once I got interested in multimedia presentations and the effects of social media style ministry I decided, as unto the Lord, that I ought to publish some plain scriptural content concerning the revelation of The Gift of the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues in general.
This is number seven in the series and it looks at the implications of the teaching of the Word of God in the first book of Corinthians and how many have come to wrest the word of God to the loss of many and the confusion of most. Here is to letting a little plain scriptural light into the dimness of our understanding in the hope that we will be flooded with joy and power upon realising that this gift is for us and our children and for as many as the Lord our God shall call.

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

Renewed in Grace
2. • In the first session we saw that there would
come a time when Christians would not
endure sound doctrine
Sound Doctrine Should Endure
3. • Without grace not a single person could be
saved. The grace of God is the complete plan
of redemption secured for all mankind by
God’s only begotten son JESUS.
Grace Is What Saves Lost
Mankind
• Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye
saved through faith; and that not
of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
4. • The Bible clearly teaches and shows that
justification is clarified.
• Men are justified by grace through faith and
works are the evidence of a living faith.
The Biblical Teaching about
Justification
• The testimony of the
Scriptures repeat this over
and over again
5. • John 10:27-29 My sheep hear my voice, and I know
them, and they follow me: 28 And I give unto them
eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any
man pluck them out of my hand. 29 My Father, which
gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to
pluck them out of my Father's hand.
John 10:27-29 In the Light of This
6. • Salvation is two sided, it is a two sided covenant
• Jesus promises eternal security to those who
believe in him
Look at Both Sides
• Believe in him as Saviour
and so are faithful to him as
LORD
7. • Jesus did not promise unconditional security to those who desert him
• Consider John 10:27-29 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and
they follow me: 28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall
never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. 29 My
Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to
pluck them out of my Father's hand.
Promise Unconditional Security?
8. • John 15:1-2 I am the true vine, and my Father is
the husbandman. 2 Every branch in me that
beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every
branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it
may bring forth more fruit.
See Both Sides Here
• Jesus plainly pointed out
that salvation is conditional
9. • John 15:6 If a man abide not in me, he is
cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and
men gather them, and cast them into the
fire, and they are burned.
Again in Verse Six
10. • Born-again people of God are described by
the Lord Jesus using many different symbols
and settings BUT they are all the same group
of people because there is only one flock.
Sheep & Branches – the Same
• The “my sheep” in John 10
are the same as “the
branches” of John 15
11. • That can come together when the church meets – the saved/the
unsaved
• The “once in grace always in grace” advocates contend that a
professing Christian who “falls away” was not truly saved in the
first place.
• Such teaching is obviously inconsistent
There Are Two Groups
• It is impossible to fall away
from faith that was never
possessed!
12. • Galatians 4:7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son;
and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
• This is a warning Galatians 5:21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness,
revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have
also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not
inherit the kingdom of God.
The Warning in Galatians
• Paul clearly emphasised that
his words were a warning to
truly converted Christians
13. • Jesus plainly referred to saved people who become reprobate
• John 15:1-2 I am the true vine, and my Father is the
husbandman. 2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he
taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it,
that it may bring forth more fruit.
Jesus Taught Falling from Grace
• The term “in me”
says it all!
14. • Jude 1:22-23 And of some have compassion,
making a difference: 23 And others save
with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating
even the garment spotted by the flesh.
Jude Explains the Difference
• There is a difference between those
who are truly converted and backslide
and those who profess Christ Jesus
and live in an unrighteous manner.
15. • The Ultra grace movement have a former pseudo-Calvinism and
they basically teach that when a person is saved he receives
eternal life and even if he is unfaithful he cannot lose his eternal
life.
• 1 John 5:12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not
the Son of God hath not life.
Pseudo-Calvinists & Calvinists
• This is contrary to the very
nature of salvation
16. • Eternal life is not like a Christmas gift that God gives to a believer at
conversion to do with as they please.
• The right to possession of eternal life is conditional to following and
fellowship with the Son of God
• John 6:53 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you,
Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have
no life in you.
Eternal Life Is Not a Privately
Owned Possession
• Eternal life is IN JESUS
CHRIST
17. • A person receives eternal life BECAUSE he
receives JESUS CHRIST.
• If a person TOTALLY breaks fellowship with
JESUS CHRIST he stops receiving life
When a Person Is Saved
• 1 John 1:6 If we say that we have
fellowship with him, and walk in
darkness, we lie, and do not the
truth:
18. • Jesus promised eternal life to those who are
converted and follow him
• Those, however, even though they have been saved,
(“every branch in me”) if they desert Him (“abide not
in me”) forfeit their inheritance of eternal life.
THE TRUTH IS VERY OBVIOUS
• The warning of God’s Word
on this subject to clear and
cannot honestly be denied.
19. • Read this following scripture for yourself
• There is no trickery here the word of God
simply means what the word of God says
Warnings of the Word
20. • Hebrews 12:25 See that ye refuse not him that
speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused
him that spake on earth, much more shall not
we escape, if we turn away from him that
speaketh from heaven:
“IF WE TURN AWAY FROM HIM”
21. • Revelation 17:14 These shall make war with the
Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for
he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they
that are with him are called, and chosen, and
faithful.
Do Not Be Deceived!
• Heaven is filled with those
who are “CALLED AND
CHOSEN AND FAITHFUL”
22. End of Number Four
Checks to Unconditional Covenants 5
SPIRITUAL ADOPTION
Editor's Notes
As always there are two ways of perceiving a matter like this that has to be considered.
Take, for instance, the concept of lending and repaying.
The Scriptures tell us that we ought to lend and not expect to be paid back – this is to be our expectation. The Scriptures also tell us that we should, when we borrow, always pay it back.
So it depends whether you are a lender or a borrower as to what your expectations ought to be. It would be entirely immoral and unscriptural to borrow something from somebody and then simply refuse to pay it back on the grounds that the lender is not to expect to receive it.
We are saved by the grace of God and that not of ourselves but God says that his salvation will produce outcomes, works – that is things that are done that we are party to both by volition and consequence.
It really is not that hard of a concept.
Compare these two passages carefully
John 10:27-29 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. 29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.
John 15:1-6 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. 2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. 3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. 5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. 6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
I have a whole study that looks at every example that Jesus uses to describe his people to show how they are connected to him by reference to the Word, the Blood, and the Spirit.
Examples of This Are: the Bridegroom & the Bride; the Vine & the Branch; the Captain & the Soldiers; the Head & the Body; The Shepherd & the Sheep and many others. There is only one body, there is only one flock, there is only one way, there is only one door, there is only one Name.
Not unlike saying a man was divorced if never been married, died when he had never lived or fallen off a horse when he had never got on the horse in the first place.
It is true that you could be going to a church and attending its assembly without actually being born-again
There is a growing trend in order to make these attendees more welcome to not actually promote a difference between the seeker and the saved.
This is a mistake that is not supported within the Scriptures
Oh the twisting of scriptures and gymnastic interpretations that one must go through to suggest that the kingdom of God does not apply to us the body of Christ.
Please do not be so naive to think that the battle between the flesh and the spirit is not the same as the battle between the new man and the old man or the new birth and the first birth and at the outcome of this battle is not the same.
I find two things get miss interpreted
1 rightly dividing the word of God means timing and ages when applied to which Scriptures are applicable
2 suggesting that the symbolic references to; the man of sin, the old man, the body of sin, the flesh, the body of death, the old nature, the natural mind et cetera are not all referring to the same state and condition. There is a perception that Christ lives in the spirit isolated, as it were, from the soul and the body. In other words you can do things with your body and soul that do not affect your spirit.
If this is the case that Christ is isolated in your spirit what means this Scripture?
2 Corinthians 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
Jesus teaches that a person who is truly converted can become unfruitful and be lost
Matthew 13:22 He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.
I have found that many backslidden people become remorseful and need encouragement in their faith building up while many professing Christians who are rebellious need admonition and warning
Knowing the difference between nurture/admonition, encouragement/warn is the true understanding of exhortation. And we should all exhort one another because we are brethren
Hebrews 3:13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
This understanding comes as you move from milk to meat in the word of God
THERE WILL BE NO DESERTERS HERE
It is good to be called, it is good to be chosen but it is better to be faithful. Of course, we cannot be faithful without the grace of God but faithfulness is discernible, testable and provable. It is thoroughly practical and exists in the world in which we live. One is either faithful or unfaithful it is a state of actual practice in life. If I was to tell my wife that I intended to be faithful while committing adultery and that I was actually thinking of her during the act she would laugh at me to my face and I can assure you that I would lose the right to my place in her life.
