As A Writer
2/3 of John’s Gospel covers the last week of Jesus’ life
John presents more of a theological reflection on Jesus’ life
John presents the winds of hostility that were blowing from the hierarchy
of the Jewish establishment against Jesus

Thoughts on Studying John
• Every detail of Jesus’ encounters is important.
• God put every situation and person in place for Jesus to respond and
minister.
• Every situation and response has application for the believer.
• Focus on the “Big Picture” and the importance of the “Details”.
John’s Mission Statement
John 20:30-31
30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are
not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that
Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in
his name.
Review of John 4:1-38
• Jesus talks with a Samaritan woman and asks for a drink of water.
• Jesus tells the woman about her past.
•
•

Jesus identified himself as the Messiah (Christ).
The Samaritan woman went to her town and told others about meeting
Jesus.

Many Samaritans Believe
John 4:39-42
39 Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the
woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.” 40 So when the
Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two
days. 41 And because of his words many more became believers. 42 They said
to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we
have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the
world.”
The Woman’s Testimony
• “He told me everything I ever did.”
• She was the 1st missionary witness in John
• Why is this evidence that Jesus was the Christ? V. 29
• He knew all of her dark secrets.
• He revealed the longings in her heart.
• He knew her needs.
• He forgave and did not condemn.
The Savior of the World
John 4:42
42 They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you
said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the
Savior of the world.”
• Post-resurrection title for Jesus (Paul & Luke)
• Only recorded instance in the Gospels where this title used in Jesus’ public
ministry
“The Savior of the World”
• This title had been applied to many of the Caesars during Jesus’ lifetime.
• Samaritans recognized that “the political salvation of the world is no
longer expected from political saviors but from Jesus.”
• John makes a point in his writings to show that God’s work of salvation
through Jesus Christ is directed to the “world.”
John’s View: The Savior of the World
John 3:16-17
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever
believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his
Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
Jesus Heals The Official’s Son
John 4:43-45
43 After the two days he left for Galilee. 44 (Now Jesus himself had pointed out
that a prophet has no honor in his own country.) 45 When he arrived in Galilee,
the Galileans welcomed him. They had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem
at the Passover Festival, for they also had been there.
No Honor For Prophet
Matthew 13:53-58
53 When Jesus had finished these parables, he moved on from there. 54 Coming
to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they
were amazed. “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous
powers?” they asked. 55 “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name
Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? 56 Aren’t all his
sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” 57 And they took
offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in
his own town and in his own home.” 58 And he did not do many miracles there
because of their lack of faith.
What Kind of a Welcome Is This?
• Warm (?) welcome based on miracles seen recently in Jerusalem at
Passover.
• A superficial welcome based on enthusiasm for miracles is no real honor.
• The Galileans wanted to see another performance of miracles.
• Honor should include respect & credibility.
• The Galileans lacked faith.
A Desperate Question
John 4:46-47
46 Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into
wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum.
47 When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to
him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.
A Desperate Question
• “Royal Official” – Jew or Gentile?
• Worked for Herod – person of influence
• Walked 20 miles from Capernaum to Cana
• Had a life crisis – terminally ill child
• This is the first time in the Gospel that Jesus is asked specifically to address
death.
• Begged Jesus to come and heal!
Rebuke – Plea – Promise
John 4:48-50
48 “Unless you people see signs and wonders,” Jesus told him, “you will never
believe.” 49 The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”
50 “Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.”
The Rebuke
“Unless you see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe.”
• The man came out of an earthly need, one that had nothing to do with a
desire for salvation.
• The rebuke was also directed toward the Galileans.
• Faith based on the physical not spiritual.
The Rebuke – “Unless you see…..”
• The Parable of the Sower – Rocky soil
Matthew 13:20-21
20 The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word
and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since they have no root, they last only
a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they
quickly fall away.
A Plea –
John 4:49
49 The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”
• The official just asks again.
• The official teaches us to continue asking.
A Promise
John 4:50
50 “Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.”
• Greek verb (ze) – “He lives”
•
•
•

Present tense of verb
Jesus spoke and the child lived.
Jesus exhibited his power over death.

Evidence of the Official’s Faith
• Made the journey
• Made the journey & believed Jesus could heal
• Prayer to Jesus
• Come and heal my son.
• Exhibited no doubts
• Asks a second time even after Jesus’ rebuke
• Responded to Jesus
• Took Jesus at his word and departed.
The Healing & Salvation
John 4:51-54
51 While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy
was living. 52 When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said
to him, “Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.” 53 Then the father
realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, “Your son
will live.” So he and his whole household believed. 54 This was the second sign
Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee.
John 4 – The Big Picture
THE POWER TO SAVE
• Bookend Cana Miracles
• Water to wine: “first sign”
• 1st coming of Jesus was in all gentleness to bring joy
• Distance Healing: “second sign”
• 2nd coming will be in majesty to take away our weakness and
our punishments, and to make us like his radiant body
• Faith in Christ is not only a personal commitment to the word of Jesus; it
leads others to faith as well.
• Samaritan woman at the well (Many believed)
• Royal official (Whole household)

John 5: The Big Picture – Theology
• Jesus’ Divinity (or Father-Son) Sermon
• How the Son is related to the Father and is accredited by Him
• The fullest description of Jesus’ relation to God
An Unusual Phenomenon
John 5:1-3
1 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals.
2 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is
called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. 3 Here a
great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed.
4 For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the
water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made
whole of whatsoever disease he had. (KJV)
• NOTE: (Verse 4 is not always included in texts because it is believed to
have been inserted by a copyist to explain why people waited by the
pool in large numbers.)
Pool of Bethesda near Sheep Gate

Moving of the waters
38 Year Malady
John 5:5-7
5 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus
saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long
time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?” 7 “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I
have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying
to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”
Jesus at the Pool of Bethesda

John 5: 8-10
8 Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” 9 At once the
man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took
place was a Sabbath, 10 and so the Jewish leaders said to the man who had
been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”
Sabbath Work
• Rabbis interpreted the law to specify 39 rules of Sabbath observance.
• Last prohibition was one against carrying something from one place to
another.
• Rabbis were more concerned with man’s disobedience to their rules that
rejoicing in his deliverance from suffering.
• Jesus was setting the stage for his next sermon.
John 5: 11-15
11 But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat
and walk.’ ” 12 So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up
and walk?” 13 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had
slipped away into the crowd that was there. 14 Later Jesus found him at the
temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something
worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jewish leaders
that it was Jesus who had made him well.
The Response of the Healed Man
• Followed Jesus’ directive, but did not know who healed him
• Went to the temple after healing
• Given a challenge (invitation) and warning by Jesus
• Reported his healer to the Jews (Rabbis)
A Brilliant Defense
John 5: 16-17
16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders
began to persecute him. 17 In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father is
always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.”
“My Father……”
• Jesus claims to be God’s Son (divine) with this statement.
• Blasphemy is committed when someone claims to be divine.
“My Father is always at his work …”
• Jesus reminded them that God created all things in 6 days, and rested on
the 7th day.
• Hebrew “bara” for create implies sustained action.
• God did not cease being active with his creation when he rested.
• Jesus was affirming that God is the omnipotent Lord who governs
everything He makes from moment to moment.
Jewish Law on God Working on the Sabbath
• It was acceptable for God to work on the Sabbath.
• God was exempt from the 39th Law, but people were not exempt.
• Because God is infinite and His domain is infinite, He rises above the
restriction.
“…. and I too, am working.”
• Jesus said it is lawful for him to heal (work) on the Sabbath because he is
God’s Son.
• Jesus’ rationale for His Sabbath conduct infuriated the Jewish leaders
even more.
• Then he said to them,
Mark 2:27
27 … “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the
Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
John 5:18
18 For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the
Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with
God.
• Jesus was clearly claiming to be God.
• Blasphemy according to the Jews
The Son and the Father
John 5:19-20
19 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by
himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the
Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all
he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you
will be amazed.
• V. 19 – The deep dependence of the Son
• V. 20 – The deep love of the Father
Power Over Death
John 5:21
21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son
gives life to whom he is pleased to give it.
• Jesus, as God’s Son, had the power to heal and raise the dead.
• Miracles were done to demonstrate Jesus’ power as God’s Son.
• Example: The Royal Official’s Son in John 4
Judgment Committed to the Son
John 5:22-23
22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the
Son, 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does
not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.
•

God has delegated the task of judging the world to His Son, Jesus.

Acts 17:31
31 For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he
has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the
dead.”
Faith and Life Connected
John 5:24-27
24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me
has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.
25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will
hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26 For as the
Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.
27 And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.
Resurrection at 2nd Coming
John 5:28-30
28 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their
graves will hear his voice 29 and come out—those who have done what is good
will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.
30 By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for
I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.
1 Thessalonians 4:16-18
16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with
the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in
Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught
up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be
with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.
THE FATHER AND THE SON –
A Unique Relationship
• Let’s explore the relationship of God (The Father) and Jesus (The Son).
• The Holy Spirit had not been sent yet in John 5
• Theological Terms:
• Ontological Trinity vs. Economic Trinity
• How God and Jesus can be One Being with different roles
Ontological Trinity
• Ontology is the study of being.
• The Godhead = 3 persons = God, Jesus, Holy Spirit
• The ontological structure of the Trinity is Unity or Oneness.
• The Father and the Son are equal in power, glory and being.
John 1:1
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was
God.
Economic Trinity
• Economic Trinity deals with the Roles of each.
• The Father sent the Son for our redemption.
• The Son acquires our redemption for us.
• The Son (Jesus) will judge the world.
• From all eternity the Father sends the Son, and the Son is subordinate to
the Father.
• They are equal in power, glory & being, but there is economic
subordination of the Son to the Father.
Witnesses to Christ
John 5:31-47
• Jesus continues to defend himself against the accusations of the Jewish
leaders:
• Healing on the Sabbath
• Claiming to be God’s Son
• He “called” five witnesses who could support His testimony.
John 5:31-32 (NIV2011)
31 “If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true. 32 There is another who
testifies in my favor, and I know that his testimony about me is true.
Witness #1: John The Baptist
John 5:33-34
33 “You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth. 34 Not that I accept
human testimony; but I mention it that you may be saved. 35 John was a lamp
that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.
John 1:29
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb
of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
Witness # 2: Miracles
John 5:36-37
36 “I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the works that the Father
has given me to finish—the very works that I am doing —testify that the Father
has sent me. 37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me.
• Miracles serve to authenticate the messenger sent from God, not prove
His (God’s) existence.
• Jesus’ ability to do miracles meant that God was endorsing Him.
Witness #3: The Father
John 5:37b-38
37b You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, 38 nor does his word
dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent.
• God spoke at Jesus’ baptism & transfiguration
Matthew 3:17
17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I
am well pleased.”
Matthew 17:5
5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice
from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well
pleased. Listen to him!”
• Only select people heard these confirmations from God.
Witness #4: The Scriptures
John 5:39-40
39 You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have
eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, 40 yet you refuse
to come to me to have life.
• Jewish leaders were familiar with a coming promised Messiah, but refused
to believe that it was Jesus.
Witness #5: Moses
John 5:45-47
45 “But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses,
on whom your hopes are set. 46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me,
for he wrote about me. 47 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are
you going to believe what I say?”
• The Jews had a great attachment to Moses as the lawgiver.
• Jews did not expect Jesus to say that Moses would accuse them before
God.
SUMMARY
• Jesus continues to demonstrate his power and show that He is the
Messiah.
• Jesus explains His Divinity and relationship to the Father.
• Jesus reaffirms the truth in John 3:16.
John 3:16
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever
believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Song: “Fill My Cup Lord”
by Richard Blanchard
Like the woman at the well I was seeking
For things that could not satisfy;
And then I heard my Savior speaking:
"Draw from my well that never shall run dry".
There are millions in this world who are craving
The pleasures earthly things afford;
But none can match the wondrous treasure
That I find in Jesus Christ my Lord.
So, my brother, if the things this world gave you
Leave hungers that won't pass away,
My blessed Lord will come and save you,
If you kneel to Him and humbly pray:
Fill my cup Lord, I lift it up, Lord!
Come and quench this thirsting of my soul;
Bread of heaven, Feed me till I want no more-Fill my cup, fill it up and make me whole!

10 October 13, 2013, John 4;39 5;47, The Power To Save, The Power To Heal

  • 1. THE POWER TO SAVE THE POWER TO HEAL John 4: 39-54 John 5: 1-47 October 15, 2013 First Baptist Church Jackson, Mississippi USA References  THE GOSPEL OF JOHN: A Commentary by Fredrick Dale Bruner  JOHN: St. Andrew’s Expositional Commentary by R. C. Sproul John • • • As A Writer 2/3 of John’s Gospel covers the last week of Jesus’ life John presents more of a theological reflection on Jesus’ life John presents the winds of hostility that were blowing from the hierarchy of the Jewish establishment against Jesus Thoughts on Studying John • Every detail of Jesus’ encounters is important. • God put every situation and person in place for Jesus to respond and minister. • Every situation and response has application for the believer. • Focus on the “Big Picture” and the importance of the “Details”. John’s Mission Statement John 20:30-31 30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. Review of John 4:1-38 • Jesus talks with a Samaritan woman and asks for a drink of water. • Jesus tells the woman about her past.
  • 2. • • Jesus identified himself as the Messiah (Christ). The Samaritan woman went to her town and told others about meeting Jesus. Many Samaritans Believe John 4:39-42 39 Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. 41 And because of his words many more became believers. 42 They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.” The Woman’s Testimony • “He told me everything I ever did.” • She was the 1st missionary witness in John • Why is this evidence that Jesus was the Christ? V. 29 • He knew all of her dark secrets. • He revealed the longings in her heart. • He knew her needs. • He forgave and did not condemn. The Savior of the World John 4:42 42 They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.” • Post-resurrection title for Jesus (Paul & Luke) • Only recorded instance in the Gospels where this title used in Jesus’ public ministry “The Savior of the World” • This title had been applied to many of the Caesars during Jesus’ lifetime. • Samaritans recognized that “the political salvation of the world is no longer expected from political saviors but from Jesus.” • John makes a point in his writings to show that God’s work of salvation through Jesus Christ is directed to the “world.”
  • 3. John’s View: The Savior of the World John 3:16-17 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Jesus Heals The Official’s Son John 4:43-45 43 After the two days he left for Galilee. 44 (Now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country.) 45 When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him. They had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, for they also had been there. No Honor For Prophet Matthew 13:53-58 53 When Jesus had finished these parables, he moved on from there. 54 Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” they asked. 55 “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? 56 Aren’t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” 57 And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town and in his own home.” 58 And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith. What Kind of a Welcome Is This? • Warm (?) welcome based on miracles seen recently in Jerusalem at Passover. • A superficial welcome based on enthusiasm for miracles is no real honor. • The Galileans wanted to see another performance of miracles. • Honor should include respect & credibility. • The Galileans lacked faith. A Desperate Question John 4:46-47 46 Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. 47 When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.
  • 4. A Desperate Question • “Royal Official” – Jew or Gentile? • Worked for Herod – person of influence • Walked 20 miles from Capernaum to Cana • Had a life crisis – terminally ill child • This is the first time in the Gospel that Jesus is asked specifically to address death. • Begged Jesus to come and heal! Rebuke – Plea – Promise John 4:48-50 48 “Unless you people see signs and wonders,” Jesus told him, “you will never believe.” 49 The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” 50 “Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.” The Rebuke “Unless you see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe.” • The man came out of an earthly need, one that had nothing to do with a desire for salvation. • The rebuke was also directed toward the Galileans. • Faith based on the physical not spiritual. The Rebuke – “Unless you see…..” • The Parable of the Sower – Rocky soil Matthew 13:20-21 20 The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. A Plea – John 4:49 49 The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” • The official just asks again. • The official teaches us to continue asking. A Promise John 4:50 50 “Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.” • Greek verb (ze) – “He lives”
  • 5. • • • Present tense of verb Jesus spoke and the child lived. Jesus exhibited his power over death. Evidence of the Official’s Faith • Made the journey • Made the journey & believed Jesus could heal • Prayer to Jesus • Come and heal my son. • Exhibited no doubts • Asks a second time even after Jesus’ rebuke • Responded to Jesus • Took Jesus at his word and departed. The Healing & Salvation John 4:51-54 51 While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. 52 When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, “Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.” 53 Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” So he and his whole household believed. 54 This was the second sign Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee. John 4 – The Big Picture THE POWER TO SAVE • Bookend Cana Miracles • Water to wine: “first sign” • 1st coming of Jesus was in all gentleness to bring joy • Distance Healing: “second sign” • 2nd coming will be in majesty to take away our weakness and our punishments, and to make us like his radiant body • Faith in Christ is not only a personal commitment to the word of Jesus; it leads others to faith as well. • Samaritan woman at the well (Many believed) • Royal official (Whole household) John 5: THE POWER TO HEAL Preview • Jesus heals on the Sabbath • John 5:1-15
  • 6. • • Jesus explains his relationship with God • John 5:16-30 Testimonies about Jesus • John 5:31-47 John 5: The Big Picture – Theology • Jesus’ Divinity (or Father-Son) Sermon • How the Son is related to the Father and is accredited by Him • The fullest description of Jesus’ relation to God An Unusual Phenomenon John 5:1-3 1 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. 3 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. 4 For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had. (KJV) • NOTE: (Verse 4 is not always included in texts because it is believed to have been inserted by a copyist to explain why people waited by the pool in large numbers.) Pool of Bethesda near Sheep Gate Moving of the waters
  • 7. 38 Year Malady John 5:5-7 5 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?” 7 “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.” Jesus at the Pool of Bethesda John 5: 8-10 8 Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, 10 and so the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.” Sabbath Work • Rabbis interpreted the law to specify 39 rules of Sabbath observance. • Last prohibition was one against carrying something from one place to another. • Rabbis were more concerned with man’s disobedience to their rules that rejoicing in his deliverance from suffering. • Jesus was setting the stage for his next sermon.
  • 8. John 5: 11-15 11 But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’ ” 12 So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?” 13 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there. 14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had made him well. The Response of the Healed Man • Followed Jesus’ directive, but did not know who healed him • Went to the temple after healing • Given a challenge (invitation) and warning by Jesus • Reported his healer to the Jews (Rabbis) A Brilliant Defense John 5: 16-17 16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. 17 In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.” “My Father……” • Jesus claims to be God’s Son (divine) with this statement. • Blasphemy is committed when someone claims to be divine. “My Father is always at his work …” • Jesus reminded them that God created all things in 6 days, and rested on the 7th day. • Hebrew “bara” for create implies sustained action. • God did not cease being active with his creation when he rested. • Jesus was affirming that God is the omnipotent Lord who governs everything He makes from moment to moment. Jewish Law on God Working on the Sabbath • It was acceptable for God to work on the Sabbath. • God was exempt from the 39th Law, but people were not exempt. • Because God is infinite and His domain is infinite, He rises above the restriction.
  • 9. “…. and I too, am working.” • Jesus said it is lawful for him to heal (work) on the Sabbath because he is God’s Son. • Jesus’ rationale for His Sabbath conduct infuriated the Jewish leaders even more. • Then he said to them, Mark 2:27 27 … “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.” John 5:18 18 For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. • Jesus was clearly claiming to be God. • Blasphemy according to the Jews The Son and the Father John 5:19-20 19 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed. • V. 19 – The deep dependence of the Son • V. 20 – The deep love of the Father Power Over Death John 5:21 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. • Jesus, as God’s Son, had the power to heal and raise the dead. • Miracles were done to demonstrate Jesus’ power as God’s Son. • Example: The Royal Official’s Son in John 4 Judgment Committed to the Son John 5:22-23 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.
  • 10. • God has delegated the task of judging the world to His Son, Jesus. Acts 17:31 31 For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.” Faith and Life Connected John 5:24-27 24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life. 25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man. Resurrection at 2nd Coming John 5:28-30 28 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned. 30 By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words. THE FATHER AND THE SON – A Unique Relationship • Let’s explore the relationship of God (The Father) and Jesus (The Son). • The Holy Spirit had not been sent yet in John 5 • Theological Terms: • Ontological Trinity vs. Economic Trinity • How God and Jesus can be One Being with different roles
  • 11. Ontological Trinity • Ontology is the study of being. • The Godhead = 3 persons = God, Jesus, Holy Spirit • The ontological structure of the Trinity is Unity or Oneness. • The Father and the Son are equal in power, glory and being. John 1:1 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Economic Trinity • Economic Trinity deals with the Roles of each. • The Father sent the Son for our redemption. • The Son acquires our redemption for us. • The Son (Jesus) will judge the world. • From all eternity the Father sends the Son, and the Son is subordinate to the Father. • They are equal in power, glory & being, but there is economic subordination of the Son to the Father. Witnesses to Christ John 5:31-47 • Jesus continues to defend himself against the accusations of the Jewish leaders: • Healing on the Sabbath • Claiming to be God’s Son • He “called” five witnesses who could support His testimony. John 5:31-32 (NIV2011) 31 “If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true. 32 There is another who testifies in my favor, and I know that his testimony about me is true. Witness #1: John The Baptist John 5:33-34 33 “You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth. 34 Not that I accept human testimony; but I mention it that you may be saved. 35 John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light. John 1:29 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
  • 12. Witness # 2: Miracles John 5:36-37 36 “I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to finish—the very works that I am doing —testify that the Father has sent me. 37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. • Miracles serve to authenticate the messenger sent from God, not prove His (God’s) existence. • Jesus’ ability to do miracles meant that God was endorsing Him. Witness #3: The Father John 5:37b-38 37b You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, 38 nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent. • God spoke at Jesus’ baptism & transfiguration Matthew 3:17 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” Matthew 17:5 5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” • Only select people heard these confirmations from God. Witness #4: The Scriptures John 5:39-40 39 You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me to have life. • Jewish leaders were familiar with a coming promised Messiah, but refused to believe that it was Jesus. Witness #5: Moses John 5:45-47 45 “But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set. 46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. 47 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?” • The Jews had a great attachment to Moses as the lawgiver. • Jews did not expect Jesus to say that Moses would accuse them before God.
  • 13. SUMMARY • Jesus continues to demonstrate his power and show that He is the Messiah. • Jesus explains His Divinity and relationship to the Father. • Jesus reaffirms the truth in John 3:16. John 3:16 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS?? • Next Sunday: The Gospel of John-Chapter 6 Song: “Fill My Cup Lord” by Richard Blanchard Like the woman at the well I was seeking For things that could not satisfy; And then I heard my Savior speaking: "Draw from my well that never shall run dry". There are millions in this world who are craving The pleasures earthly things afford; But none can match the wondrous treasure That I find in Jesus Christ my Lord. So, my brother, if the things this world gave you Leave hungers that won't pass away, My blessed Lord will come and save you, If you kneel to Him and humbly pray: Fill my cup Lord, I lift it up, Lord! Come and quench this thirsting of my soul; Bread of heaven, Feed me till I want no more-Fill my cup, fill it up and make me whole!
