IoT Predictions for 2019 and Beyond: Data at the Heart of Your IoT StrategyDataWorks Summit
Forrester forecasts that direct spending on the Internet of Things (IoT) will exceed $400 Billion by 2023. From manufacturing and utilities, to oil & gas and transportation, IoT improves visibility, reduces downtime, and creates opportunities for entirely new business models.
But successful IoT implementations require far more than simply connecting sensors to a network. The data generated by these devices must be collected, aggregated, cleaned, processed, interpreted, understood, and used. Data-driven decisions and actions must be taken, without which an IoT implementation is bound to fail.
During this talk, we will share:
- The most promising markets and use cases for IoT for 2019 and beyond
- Specific examples of companies putting IoT to work and gaining competitive advantage
- The importance of understanding, managing, and integrating data, as IoT deployments move from pilot to production
- Key Trends and Predictions for the year and beyond

General Capabilities of GraalVM by Oleg Selajev @shelajevOracle Developers
Abstract: "General Capabilities of GraalVM"
GraalVM project enhances the Java ecosystem with an integrated, polyglot, high-performance execution environment for dynamic, static, and native languages. GraalVM supports Java, Scala, Kotlin, Groovy, and other JVM-based languages. At the same time, it can run the dynamic scripting languages JavaScript including node.js, Ruby, R, and Python.
In this session you'll see demos and learn what you can do with GraalVM, from using it as the JVM JIT compiler, enhancing the JIT, running native and polyglot programs, compiling them ahead of time for faster startup and lower runtime overhead, debugging your polyglot code using exact same tools for any language, to profiling performance and memory of your application and embedding GraalVM in a native application for portability.
GraalVM offers you the opportunity to write the code in the language you want, which suits the problem the best, and run the resulting program really fast wherever you like: JVM, native code, even inside a database.
Abstract: "Performance with Native Images"
GraalVM is a high-performance polyglot runtime for dynamic, static, and native languages. One of the abilities of GraalVM is to compile Java programs ahead of time into native images that offer performance comparable to running on the JVM but have instant startup times and much lower runtime overhead. Generating native images is proven to work on real-world applications. In this session, you will learn how native images work and what is required to generate them and will look at several examples of compiling programs ahead of time and packaging them into minimal containers. You’ll also see how to configure native image generation, work around the limitations, and configuring your application to use native images.

Advancements in technology unveil a myriad of electrical and electronic breakthroughs geared towards efficiently harnessing limited resources to meet human energy demands. The optimization of hybrid solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems plays a pivotal role in utilizing natural resources effectively. This initiative not only benefits humanity but also fosters environmental sustainability. The study investigated the design optimization of these hybrid systems, focusing on understanding solar radiation patterns, identifying geographical influences on solar radiation, formulating a mathematical model for system optimization, and determining the optimal configuration of PV panels and pumped hydro storage. Through a comparative analysis approach and eight weeks of data collection, the study addressed key research questions related to solar radiation patterns and optimal system design. The findings highlighted regions with heightened solar radiation levels, showcasing substantial potential for power generation and emphasizing the system's efficiency. Optimizing system design significantly boosted power generation, promoted renewable energy utilization, and enhanced energy storage capacity. The study underscored the benefits of optimizing hybrid solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems for sustainable energy usage. Optimizing the design of solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems as examined across diverse climatic conditions in a developing country, not only enhances power generation but also improves the integration of renewable energy sources and boosts energy storage capacities, particularly beneficial for less economically prosperous regions. Additionally, the study provides valuable insights for advancing energy research in economically viable areas. Recommendations included conducting site-specific assessments, utilizing advanced modeling tools, implementing regular maintenance protocols, and enhancing communication among system components.

CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!
Work done in cooperation with James Malloy and David Moelling from Tetra Engineering.

3. The challenge:
The transition to the next generation of cloud models hasn’t been helped by incomplete and incompatible industry responses.
Organizations need a complete SaaS/PaaS/IaaS offering, designed for enterprise applications. They also need compatible and complementary services between public and private options.
These obvious gaps are hampering cloud adoption, and putting existing IT initiatives at risk of obsolescence.
Most industry vendors only have pieces of the puzzle; leaving IT organizations to cobble together workable solutions.
Let me give you a few examples of how the Oracle toolbox has been expanded in recent weeks…..

Millennials love to chat. Their personal lives rotate around messaging and instant gratification. From getting their pals’ views on a new t-shirt they are thinking of buying to sharing their New Year’s resolutions publicly, Gen Z, which comprises the majority of the workforce today, lives an instant and synchronous life, one that is built on the foundations of consumerism. We are also living in a time where we are facing Mobile App fatigue and are unable to deal with the number of apps on our mobile device.
It is only natural that people’s preferences at work mirror those of their personal lives. And we are witnessing a paradigm shift in the way people work. The asynchronous nature of email makes it one of the most hated forms of office communication today. Anyone who has ever tried to ask a question, make a suggestion, or request an approval through email will understand the anxiety and subsequent loss in productivity caused by an excessive dependence on email.
Popular communication platforms like FB Messenger, Line, WeChat, Slack, that facilitate instant messaging are playing a pivotal role in the way enterprise are beginning to engage with consumers and in the future of our workplaces. By reducing the threshold to starting a conversation or voicing a concern, these platforms are democratizing information. They help inculcate ideas and values that are near and dear to millennials. These platforms are taking the good ol’ corporate open-door policy to the next level. By keeping conversations and discussions synchronous, the workforce is working in a way it loves to. Just as the early innovation in enterprise software liberated people from the inconvenience of paperwork, the new enterprise tools are aimed at enabling a more potent collaboration experience.

Oracle Intelligent Bots has the following 4 components
Channel configurator that abstracts the communication and UI/UX aspects of the end channel. For e.g developer does not need to code the display of a card or carousel in FB which is different to the display in Kik or Line or other messaging channels. In addition it also abstracts the speech component from Siri or Alexa and use the speech to text component to pass it on the NLP
Dialog flow execution – the heart of the Intelligent Bots is a state machine that executes context driven workflow with scoped variables. One of the differentiators with Oracle’s Intelligent Bots is that the AI components of NLP and Machine learning are part of this state flow engine as opposed to a separate black box which makes it very simple and easy for the Bot developer to model a conversation without having to worry about the state engine and the AI algorithms
AI Engine – Active machine learning that identifies the intent of the conversations from the end user and extract entities from unstructured data to create a structure ‘query’ to get data from the enterprise and respond back. The AI engine consists of an ensemble of algorithms that we will explain the next slide
Components. The final building block of the Bot builder are the components. There are system components that handle things like message channel visualization and custom components that provide integration to mobile cloud service to reuse APIs that have been created for the mobile channel.
