Chardhams.
The literal meaning of Chardham is ‘four abodes’ which constitutes of Kedarnath, Yamunotri,
Badrinath and Gangotri. These sacrosanct memorials have been dedicated to various Hindu
deities namely Goddess Ganga- symbol of purity and chastity, Kedarnath- portray lord Shiva in
one of the twelve Jyotirlinga, Goddess Yamuna - icon of power and Badrinath - splendor of Lord
Vishnu. The four divine pilgrimages of Uttarakhand have a higher unique religious significance.
Each year innumerable voyagers visit these heavenly landscapes to get rid from their earthly
pains and punishments of sins after death. Chardham is completely meant to come close to god
and religious beliefs making place in heaven.

A brief description about these destinations is as follows:
 Badrinath: It is regarded as one of the sacred shrines of Hinduism according to which
Lord Narayana dwells in this place hence is highly notable among tourists. As per the
mythology, it is also believed that Lord Vishnu conducted penance at Badrinath. It is said
that when goddess Laxmi saw his husband carrying out absolution, she personified into
Badari tree to offer shelter to his face from the bad weather situations, thus, called
Badari Narayan. As per the faith the god showed his embodiments to Narad Rishi. The
holy landmark also has a Tapt Kund which is a natural thermal spring where sojourners
come to take sacred bath to purify their sins.

 Kedarnath:According to the scientific researches, the sanctified memorial of Kedarnath
was snow-covered for nearly 400 years.As per the researches,in the middle of 13001900 AD there was a small Ice Age when the entire earth was enclosed with snow and
thus, the consecrated shrine and its surroundings were enveloped with flurry and
became glaciers. Although there is no evidence about the origin of the temple but there
are numerous myths associated with it. As stated by numerous people, the blessed
landmark was made amidst 1076 to 1099 AD by Raja Bhoj of Malwa who then ruled the
destination. While as per another hypothesis, it was constructed by Adi Shankracharya
in 8th century. It is also acclaimed that Pandavas erected a temple in Dwapar era behind
Kedarnath but it couldn’t bear the quirks of times.
 Gangotri: The charming religious place of worship is the residence of Ganga and the site
where the earth received the first touch of goddess Ganga. As per the Hindu mythology
when King Anshuman, the granfather and Dilipa the father of Bhagiratha failed to bring
goddess Ganga to earth, King Bhagiratha carried out meditations for several years to
bring the divine goddess to the earth. It is said that the goddess hid herself in Shiva’s
hair. The determined King now worshipped Lord Shiva and finally when the lord was
pleased, three streams of river came down to the world and touched the 60,000 sons
and ancestors of emperor Bhagiratha and gave them everlasting rest.
 Yamunotri:It is the divine memorial and one of the pilgrimages of Char Dham yatra
nestled in Uttarkashi nearly 3293m beyond sea level. These are bounded by mountains
and offer a view of Indo-China border. In addition to the religious significance, it also
avails an idyllic location for rock climbing and trekking.
