This document provides instructions for adding different activity widgets to a Frog VLE site to create assignments for students: 1) Text, file drop, SCORM, and quiz widgets can be added to allow students to submit text responses, files, complete interactive modules, and take quizzes. 2) The widgets are dragged from the content panel into the site layout and their settings are configured, such as instructions, file visibility options, and searching for SCORM content. 3) Once assignments are created with the activity widgets, the site can be assigned to students and teachers can track submission, provide feedback, and message students from the notifications panel.

Chapter 5: Assign
Any Site created within the VLE can be assigned to students as a task for them to
complete. This may be as simple as asking the student to read the content (such as a
revision site) or uploading files for marking. To enable students to submit work back to
their teacher for marking there are four Activity Widgets available in the Content Panel.
These are:
Text Activity Widget. This allows the teacher to enter the instructions for the
task into the widget. Once assigned the students can then type in their
response and submit it back to the teacher for marking.
File Drop Widget. This allows students to upload files to the teacher for
marking. It can be configured so that only the person uploading the files
sees them. This can be useful when files have been uploaded by the whole
group. It can also be set to allow users to delete their own files once
uploaded.
SCORM Widget. This allows SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference
Model) content to be displayed within a site. SCORM packages are
interactive modules that are assigned to students for completion. The
SCORM Widget contains a search function so that you can find and use free
SCORM content supplied by the MoE.
Quiz Widget. Displays a Quiz for the student to complete. Results can be
reset after use to allow a quiz to be re-used.
Activity Widgets can be used in conjunction with non-activity widgets. Try including text,
media (images, videos or audio files) forums, and message walls to make your
assignments more engaging.
There is also the ability for the teacher to send messages to students or groups that they
have assigned work to. Teachers can choose to either message all students or
individually. One on one communication can help students resolve problems quickly and
easily. All communication between assigned students and their teacher appears in the
teachers Notification panel.

Adding Activity Widgets to a Site
Begin by opening the site to be used as an assignment. You can access Sites from the
Resource Manager.
Adding a Text Activity Widget
To add the Text Activity widget to a site you must first click the Edit button on the left of
your screen. This will release the Content Panel.
Create a new tab on the site called ‘Assignments’. This will be where the assignments are
displayed to the student.

In the Content Panel, click on the Widgets tab.
Select the Text Activity widget and drag it into the layout box on your page.
Enter the Text Activity instructions into the text box in the Settings panel. The instructions
should be what you want your students to do.
Any text that is entered in the Settings panel will instantly appear inside the Text Activity
Widget on your page.
Click the Save Changes button to save your page.

Adding a File Drop Widget
The File Drop Widget can be used in conjunction with the Text widget. Select the Text
Widget and drag it into a layout box on your page.
Double click on the sample text displayed on the layout box.

Enter the activity instructions into the text box in the Content Panel. Any text that is entered
in the Content Panel will instantly appear inside the Text widget on your page.
Select the File Drop Widget and drag it into the layout box on your page.
Double click on the File Drop layout box displayed on the page.

In the Content Panel use the drop down menu to select whether a student can see other
files in the File Drop area. Your choices are:
Individual: Users can see only the files that they have
uploaded.
Group: Users can see and download all files that have
been uploaded.
You can also specify if students can delete their own
files after uploading them. To allow students to delete
their own files click the tickbox.
Click the Save Changes button to save your page.
Adding a SCORM Widget
Select the SCORM widget and drag it into the layout box on your page.
Double click on the SCORM layout box displayed on the page to view the SCORM settings.

In the Content Panel enter a term in the search box to find a SCORM package. Click the
search icon to begin the search.
The search results will be displayed in the Results panel. Click on a SCORM package to
add it to your site.
The SCORM layout box will now display the name of the
chosen SCORM package.
To preview the SCORM package double click on the SCORM layout box.

The SCORM package will open in a new browser
window.
Click the Save Changes button to save your page.
Adding a Quiz
Select the Quiz Widget and drag it into the layout box on your page.
Double click on the Quiz layout box displayed on the page to view the Quiz settings.

In the Content Panel, click on the Import Quiz button to search for a quiz.
Select a Quiz listed in the Resource Manager which will now be displayed. Double-click on
the Quiz name to use it in your site.
The name of the selected Quiz will now appear in the layout box on your page.

Click the Save Changes button to save your page.
To close the Content Panel click on the X button.
Your assignment is now ready to be assigned to students.

Assigning a Site
Click on Share in the Frog Bar. This will open the Share or Assign window.
Click on the Assign option.
Complete the New Assignment details. Give your assignment a name. Use the Subject
drop down menu to link the assignment to a subject from the list.

In the Recipients text box enter the name or names of individual users or groups you are
assigning to.
Once found, click on the Add button to add them to the list.
Click Next to continue.
Click on the blank date boxes to set the date(s) for the assignment to be issued and the
date returned. Use the small calendar to select a date.

The activities can have their own due date separate from the assignment date. Click on
the Activities date box to set the date(s) for the activity to be returned. Use the small
calendar to select a date.
Enter the instructions for the assignment into the Instructions area. This will be different
from the instructions entered into the activity widgets. This might be ‘complete the 3
activities as instructed…’
You can ask your students if they understood the assignment using the Ask for self-
evaluation checkbox. Check the box if you require them to self-evaluate the assignment
and leave comments.

Click the blue Assign button to send your assignment.
The assignment will now be sent to those listed.
A message will appear in the students Notification panel informing them of the
assignment and its due date(s).

Marking an Assignment
Assignments can be marked and the marks released back to the student(s) or group(s)
upon completion. When a student submits their work for marking you will be notified by a
red number in your Notifications panel. Clicking on the Notifications icon displays the
details of the submission.
Note: You can also access submitted assignments by clicking on the Assignments icon in
the Quick Launch menu.
Click on the details in the Notifications panel. This will open the Assignment Manager.

In the Assignments window you will see the name of the assignment issued as well as
who it was issued to.
Roll your cursor over the assignment name to remind yourself of the instructions issued
with the assignment.
Click on the assignment name to see all students that it was assigned to.
Click on a student’s name to view their work.

You will now see the submitted assignment window. This contains an overview of the
student’s submitted activity, their self-evaluation and any comments they have included.
In the Submitted Work area you will see both the activity widgets that were included in the
assignment.
Downloading a Submitted File
The File Drop appears at the top of the Submitted Work area. Click on the View link to
open the assignment site.
Once opened you will see the file/s that were uploaded by the student.

To download the file that the student has submitted, Click on the file name (not the file
icon). The file name will turn into a blue link.
The file will now be downloaded onto your computer. Click the file to open it.
Note: Frog cannot open or play files. You must have the relevant software installed on
your computer to open and play files.
When finished downloading the file(s) click on the arrow icon in the Frog Bar.
Click on the X in the corner to close the Site and return back to Assignments.

Viewing the Text Activity
The Text Activity appears underneath the File Drop widget in the Submitted Work area.
To view the Text Activity click on the text on the right.
The text submitted by the student will open in a new window.
Click OK to close the window and return back to the Submitted Work area.
Viewing the Quiz Results
The information displayed in the Submitted Work area shows basic details of the Quiz
submitted by the user. The Activity mark value represents the number of correct answers
as a percentage of the total possible answers.
In most cases viewing the basic information displayed in the window shown below is
usually enough.

However, for a more detailed view of the results, click on View.
This will open the site containing the Quiz widget. Next, click on the Assignment menu.
Select the Data Viewer from the drop down menu.
This will launch the Data Viewer. For further details please refer to the Data Viewer section
in this guide.
Viewing the SCORM Results
The amount of information given as a result of the user taking part in the SCORM package
will vary. Some SCORM packages return very little information as they may simply be an
introduction to a topic and do not require a mark. In this case viewing the basic
information displayed in the window shown below is usually enough.

Click on More… to view additional information in a separate window.
Click on OK to return to the Submitted Work area.
For a more detailed view of the results, click on the name of the SCORM.
This will open the Site containing the SCORM widget. Next, click on the Assignment menu.
Select the Data Viewer from the drop down menu.
This will launch the Data Viewer. For further details please refer to the Data Viewer section
in this guide.

Marking an Assignment
The self-evaluation feedback and comments can be reviewed in the Self Evaluation
section.
Enter any comments into the Overall Comments box. Add a mark into the Mark Given box.
Click Save to finish.
Once completed click on the forward/back buttons to view the next student.

Closing an Assignment
Once you have marked all of the student(s) work you must close the assignment and
release the marks. Releasing the marks issues the mark back to the students.
Click on the name of the assignment in the Navigation Trail at the top of the assignment.
This will display all the students that received the assignment.
Click the Close assignment button.
In the Close assignment window ensure the Release Marks checkbox is checked.

To add a message with the marks enter the message in the Add a message text box.
Click the Close Assignment button to release the marks and close the assignment. The
marks have now been released. The marks and message will appear in the students
Notifications panel.
Messaging all Students
At any time during the assigning process you have the ability to send a message to all
students that have received the assignment.
Begin by clicking on the assignment name.

Click on the Message all button.
Enter your message in the text box that opens.
Click the blue Send button to the message.
The message has now been sent to all assigned students. It will appear in the students
Notifications panel.
Messaging a Student
At any time during the assigning process you have the ability to send a message to an
individual student that has received the assignment.

Click on the name of the assignment.
Click on the Message Wall icon next to the students’ name.
Enter your message in the text box that opens. Click the Post button to send the message.
The message has now been sent to the student. It will appear in the students Notifications
panel.
Returning an Assignment for Reworking
Once a student has submitted an assignment you then have the option to send it back for
reworking. This allows the student to re-submit their work.

Click on the name of the assignment.
Click on the students’ name to view their work.
Click on the Return Assignment button.

Enter your message in the text box that opens. Click the blue Return Assignment button to
return the assignment to the student.
A message will now appear in the students’ Notifications panel informing them of the
return.
Closing an Assignment
If a student has not handed in their assignment by the deadline you may close the
assignment down. This allows you to issue a mark for the assignment even if nothing has
been submitted.
Note: Once an assignment has been closed this will complete the process and the
student will no longer be able to submit the assignment.
Open an assignment that has not been submitted. Click on the Close assignment button.

Enter your message in the text box that opens. Click on the Close Assignment button.
A message will now appear in the student Notifications panel informing them of their
mark.

The Data Viewer
If you have edit and manage access to a site and have included data gathering items
such as SCORM packages, Quizzes, Polls or Forms you can review the data that has been
collected by these items. The Data Viewer is a tool that is used to review these collections
of data. It is accessed on a site by site basis and provides you with the ability to export the
data collected.
The Data Viewer is accessed from the Site Menu. A small arrow will appear next to the
Site label indicating that the menu is available to you.
The Data Viewer will check the site to assess what data to display. The ICONS on the left
indicate the types of data gathering widgets found on the site. Data is available for those
Widgets displayed in bold.
Click the expanded view button to view the Data Category
names.

If there is only one of the data gathering widgets found on the site, the data will be
displayed in the panel on the right. However, if there is more than one widget in that
category they will be displayed in the panel as tiles.
If you single click on the tile, the actions menu becomes available.
You can now either choose to select one of the options from the menu or to double click
on a tile to proceed to viewing the data. The left hand panel of the Data Viewer will then
collapse, maximising the space available to you for viewing the data.

Viewing the Data
When viewing an individual item, different fields will be shown based on the item type. A
quiz will show different fields to a SCORM package for example. You will also find different
options in the category view Actions menu depending on the type of item selected. The
expected fields and actions for each type of data collection item are as follows:
Quizzes
When viewing the data for an individual quiz the summary area of the view will display:
o The name of the quiz.
o How many times people have taken the quiz (total submissions).
o The number of people the site has been shared with.
o The date and time of the first submission.
o The date and time of the most recent submission.
o The summary area will also display a graph showing the number of submissions
per day, week or month. If the quiz has been active for less than 14 days the graph
is displayed in days, between 14 and 59 days in weeks and 60 days or over in
months.
The following data fields will also be returned from the quiz, which can then be exported
to a CSV:
o User Name: The username of the person who took the quiz.
o Name: The full name of the person who took the quiz.
o Start: The date and time the person began the quiz.
o End: The date and time the person completed the quiz.
o Score: The final score achieved, based on questions answered correctly first time
and questions answered correctly on retries.
o Answered First Time: The number of questions answered correctly first time.
o Answered After Retry: The number of questions answered correctly on a retry, after
initially answering incorrectly.
o Total Retry Attempts: The number of physical retries attempted by the person
taking the quiz, this is not the number of questions retried.

By default the table is sorted by date/time of the last submission with the most recent
submission being displayed at the top. You can reorder the table by clicking any column
header.
Forms
When viewing the data for an individual form the summary area of the view will display:
o The name of the form.
o How many times people have taken the form (total submissions).
o The number of people the site has been shared with.
o The date and time of the first submission.
o The date and time of the most recent submission.
o The form description.
o The summary area will also display a graph showing the number of submissions
per day, week or month. If the form has been active for less than 14 days the
graph is displayed in days, between 14 and 59 days in weeks and 60 days or over
in months.
The following data fields will also be returned from the form, which can then be exported
to a CSV:
o User Name: The username of the person who submitted the form.
o Name: The full name of the person who submitted the form.
o Date/Time of Submission: The date and time that the form was submitted.
o Form Fields: The fields from the form will also be displayed in the order in which
they appeared in the form. Each field will have its own column with multiple choice
answers being displayed as sub-columns.
By default this table is sorted by date/time of submission with the most recent
submissions at the top. This table can be reordered by selecting any column header.

SCORM
When a SCORM package is selected at category level the actions menu will allow for
exporting of quiz data to a CSV only.
When viewing the data for an individual SCORM package the summary area of the view
will display:
o The name of the SCORM package.
o How many times people have completed the SCORM package (total submissions).
o The number of people the site has been shared with.
o The date and time of the first submission.
o The date and time of the most recent submission.
o The summary area will also display a graph showing the number of submissions
per day, week or month. If the SCORM package has been active for less than 14
days the graph is displayed in days, between 14 and 59 days in weeks and 60
days or over in months.
The following data fields will also be returned from the submission, which can then be
exported to a CSV:
o User Name: The username of the person who completed the SCORM package.
o Name: The full name of the person who completed the SCORM package.
o Completed: Whether or not the SCORM package was fully completed. If a SCORM
package has more than one activity it may be only partially completed. If the
person taking the SCORM package completed it fully a Y will be displayed. If an N
is displayed the SCORM package has not been completed.
o Overall Score: The score for the whole SCORM package.
o Time Taken: The time, in minutes, that the person submitting the SCORM package
took to complete it.
o Submission Date: The date the SCORM package was submitted.
As SCORM packages can contain more than one module the data grid has been
designed to expand to show information for each of the individual modules for a given
submission.

To expand a submission and see further details of the modules within it, select the
submission you wish to expand by clicking any part of the submission row. The
submission should now expand to show further information.
When exporting a SCORM packages data to a CSV file the fields list above will be
exported. The data for each module will also be exported but will be restricted to module
name and score.
Polls
When viewing the data for an individual Poll the summary area of the view will display:
o The name of the Poll.
o How many times people have completed the Poll (total submissions).
o The number of people the site has been shared with.
o The date and time of the first submission.
o The date and time of the most recent submission.
o An overview of the current Poll results.
o The summary area will also display a graph showing the number of submissions
per day, week or month. If the Poll has been active for less than 14 days the graph
is displayed in days, between 14 and 59 days in weeks and 60 days or over in
months.
Click on the Table tab to view the results in table form (default view).

Click on the Graph tab to view the results as a bar graph.
The following data fields will be displayed in the data grid, which can then be exported to
a CSV:
o User Name: The username of the person who completed the Poll.
o Name: The full name of the person who completed the Poll.
o Response: The option the person chose from the Poll.
o Date and Time of Submission: The date and time the submission was made.
When exporting a .CSV file extra columns will be included displaying gender and year
group.

Clearing Results
Any users that have access to the Data Manager are able to clear all results gathered in
the site. Each data gathering Widget captures data differently. When clearing the data the
following applies:
Polls: Users can only submit a Poll once. Occasionally, you may wish to reset the Poll to
allow users to submit it again. This may be because the wording of the question asked
was incorrect or that the Poll has been edited to include new options. Clearing the results
of a Poll permanently removes all data from the original Poll.
Forms: Users can submit a Form multiple times. All data captured includes a timestamp
that can be used to track the order of submissions. Unlike Polls you do not need to reset a
Form to allow users to complete it again. If a Form has been edited to include new options
then it is advisable to clear the data before making it available for submission. Clearing
the results of a Form permanently removes all data from the original Form.
Quizzes: Users can only submit a Quiz once. Occasionally, you may wish to reset the Quiz
to allow users to submit it again. This may be because the wording of the questions
asked was incorrect or that the Quiz has been edited to include new questions. Clearing
the results of a Quiz permanently removes all data from the original Quiz.
SCORM: It is not possible to clear the results for SCORM objects.
To clear the data click on the actions menu in the Data Viewer.
Click the Clear results option from the drop down menu.
This will clear all data collected by the Poll. This action cannot be reversed.

Exporting the Data
Any users that access to the Data Manager are able to export the gathered data for that
site in the form of a CSV (comma separated values) file.
Click on the actions menu.
Click on the Export option to download the data onto your device in the usual way
managed by your browser. The downloaded data can then be viewed in a suitable
spreadsheet program.
