Significant cost increases. Decreasing benefits. Lack of control. If this is your employee benefits story, then we invite you to consider alternative ways to fund your benefits program.
Captives bring a slew of benefits, including more control, long-term cost savings, and the potential to earn dividends. Most importantly, it puts you in charge of your benefits program's performance.
Shawn Lanter from Berkley Accident and Health digs into what a captive is, why they exist, and how they could work for you.
The Institute of Medicine's report, Unequal Treatment: Confronting Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Health Care, cited more than 175 studies documenting diagnostic and treatment disparities of various conditions among racial/ethnic populations, even when confounding factors (e.g., insurance and socioeconomic status, comorbidities, age, healthcare venue, stage of diseases) were controlled for in analyses.Specific examples include higher rates of hypertension, diabetes, breast cancer, cervical cancer, colon cancer, and cardiovascular diseases in African Americans; diabetes in Native Americans, Alaskan Natives, and Latino populations; and heart disease mortality in certain Asian American, Latino or Hispanic, and Native American groups.Lower rates of immunization and higher rates of infant mortality have been reported in African American, Hispanic, and Native American populations.
Catasys, Inc. harnesses proprietary big data predictive analytics, artificial intelligence and telehealth, combined with human intervention, to deliver improved member health and cost savings to health plans through integrated technology enabled treatment solutions. It is our mission to provide access to affordable and effective care, thereby improving health and reducing cost of care for people who suffer from the medical consequences of behavioral health conditions; helping these people and their families achieve and maintain better lives
Employers are always looking for ways to reduce one of their biggest expenditures–the cost of providing health insurance to employees. Many employers have explored solutions such as adding wellness plans, reducing usage, and providing different provider access mechanisms, all with modest success.
Stemming the rising costs of health insurance requires management to understand and improve healthcare outcomes for their employee and dependent populations. Changing the future of employer health insurance will require a multi-faceted approach:
Driving additional value by reducing utilization of healthcare services within these employer populations.
Utilizing a wider lens through which to view performance of various providers, then making decisions based on those who are consistently providing low cost, high quality care.
Employer will need to combine their data with other companies across a geographic region to get a better picture of the provider landscape than has ever been possible before.
2015 Nonprofit compensation survey discusses insights into trends, but also goes a step beyond, with expanded coverage and detail on:
• Compensation philosophy and practice
• Incentive design data
• C-suite position data, highlighting practices for disqualified persons and key employees
• Board compensation practices

HR Webinar: The Affordable Care Act Turns 10 Years Old: Where to From Here?Ascentis
Happy Birthday, ACA! Ten years ago, on March 23, 2010, the ACA was signed into law. Adding an unprecedented level of consumer protections and minimum quality standards to the health insurance Americans use, the law was and remains controversial to this day. In fact, the rate of uninsured nonelderly Americans dropped from a high of 17.8% in 2010, to 10.0% in 2016. The cancelation of the individual mandate, among other factors, has started to reverse that trend, with increases in the uninsured rates in 2017 and 2018. As the ACA celebrates its tenth birthday, it has something else to celebrate: its highest approval rate since public opinion polls began tracking it: 55% favorable opinion vs. just 37% unfavorable opinion.
As an HR professional, always busy with a hundred other people priorities at your company, it is hard to keep up with the ever-changing laws in the health insurance industry, and specifically, the ACA. With the law predicted to head to the Supreme Court soon for the third review of its fundamental constitutionality, receiving real-time updates becomes even more important. See what has changed in the ACA, looking at where it started to where it is now in this webinar!
Healthcare Financial Transformation: Five Leading StrategiesHealth Catalyst
Healthcare financial transformation—improving care delivery while lowering costs—has been an ongoing challenge for health systems in the era of value-based care and an even more prominent concern amid COVID-19. While better care and reduced expense to organizations and consumers might seem like opposing goals, by understanding the true cost of services and other drivers of expense, organizations can successfully manage costs while maintaining, and even improving, care delivery. To that end, health systems can use data- and analytics-driven tools and strategies to addresses financial challenges, including uncompensated care, prolonged accounts receivable days, discharged not final billed cases, inefficient resource use, and more.
PYA Principal Carol Carden and Senior Manager Angie Caldwell presented “Hot Topics in Physician Compensation” at the Kentucky Society of CPAs (KY CPA) Health Care Conference, May 18, 2016. The presentation explored the latest developments in physician compensation structure, as well as considerations related to stacking compensation elements, the role and impact of quality incentives, the latest in affiliation models, and population health initiatives.
Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) and clinically integrated networks (CINs) are two types of organizations working to address the problem of rising costs. As ACOs and CINs continue to evolve, organizations moving into value-based care (VBC) face an ever-changing landscape. This article looks at the evolution of the ACO and CIN models, what new tools ACOs employ today to promote success, and lessons learned from organizations that have succeeded in alternative payment models. It also explores what healthcare experts believe the future of alternative payment models will look like and competencies to develop to meet those changing demands.

Medical Technology Tackles New Health Care Demand - Research Report - March 2...pchutichetpong
M Capital Group (“MCG”) predicts that with, against, despite, and even without the global pandemic, the medical technology (MedTech) industry shows signs of continuous healthy growth, driven by smaller, faster, and cheaper devices, growing demand for home-based applications, technological innovation, strategic acquisitions, investments, and SPAC listings. MCG predicts that this should reflects itself in annual growth of over 6%, well beyond 2028.
According to Chris Mouchabhani, Managing Partner at M Capital Group, “Despite all economic scenarios that one may consider, beyond overall economic shocks, medical technology should remain one of the most promising and robust sectors over the short to medium term and well beyond 2028.”
There is a movement towards home-based care for the elderly, next generation scanning and MRI devices, wearable technology, artificial intelligence incorporation, and online connectivity. Experts also see a focus on predictive, preventive, personalized, participatory, and precision medicine, with rising levels of integration of home care and technological innovation.
The average cost of treatment has been rising across the board, creating additional financial burdens to governments, healthcare providers and insurance companies. According to MCG, cost-per-inpatient-stay in the United States alone rose on average annually by over 13% between 2014 to 2021, leading MedTech to focus research efforts on optimized medical equipment at lower price points, whilst emphasizing portability and ease of use. Namely, 46% of the 1,008 medical technology companies in the 2021 MedTech Innovator (“MTI”) database are focusing on prevention, wellness, detection, or diagnosis, signaling a clear push for preventive care to also tackle costs.
In addition, there has also been a lasting impact on consumer and medical demand for home care, supported by the pandemic. Lockdowns, closure of care facilities, and healthcare systems subjected to capacity pressure, accelerated demand away from traditional inpatient care. Now, outpatient care solutions are driving industry production, with nearly 70% of recent diagnostics start-up companies producing products in areas such as ambulatory clinics, at-home care, and self-administered diagnostics.
