This document discusses universal health coverage and the challenges facing family medicine. It notes that 400 million people lack access to essential health services and 6% of people in low- and middle-income countries are pushed into extreme poverty due to health costs. Non-communicable diseases are a growing epidemic responsible for 41 million deaths per year. There is also a shortage of health workers, with 18 million more needed to achieve universal coverage. Family medicine can help address these issues by providing comprehensive, continuous, and cost-effective primary care. However, more training programs and physicians are needed to establish family medicine as the foundation of health systems and expand access to essential services.
