“Come Holy Spirit” ~ Prayer
Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle
in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and
they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the
earth. O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did
instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same
Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His
consolations, through Christ Our Lord, Amen.
Goal : To receive a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit
TThhee NNiicceennee CCrreeeedd
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of
all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the
Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from
God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,
consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us
men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy
Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake
he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was
buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the
Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of
the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord,
the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with
the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through
the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I
confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the
resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

This session we will examine…
What are the four “marks” of the Church.
What do we mean by ~ I believe in
one, holy, catholic, and apostolic
Church.
CChh::99 && 1100 –– PPeerrffoorrmmaannccee
OObbjjeeccttiivveess
 The Church is “One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic.”
 These are the four characteristics or “marks” of the Church.
 The Church is one because it is unique: Christ founded
one Church, and all members of the Church are united in
his one body.
 The Church has been afflicted by various schisms and
divisions, but remains in essence one. All Christians are
called to work toward greater unity with one another.
IInnttrroodduuccttiioonn
 In the ancient world, a seal was a person’s
signature or identification mark.
 Christians from earliest times have identified four
essential characteristics or marks of the Church;
One, Holy Catholic, and Apostolic.
TThhee FFiirrsstt MMaarrkk:: TThhee CChhuurrcchh iiss OOnnee
 One = Christ founded one Church
 united in faith, in worship (same readings, structure, prayers … except
for a difference in language).
 creed and our other teachings,
 the celebration of the sacraments,
 hierarchical structure based on the apostolic succession
 Church is one because Jesus Christ is one
 We believe in one Church just as we believe
in one God, not many gods.
 Unity is of the essence of the Church
 Scripture – “One flock, one shepherd” (Jn 10:16 & Mt 12:25)
 Through the Church on earth all humanity has an opportunity to be
united to Christ by becoming part of the one Mystical Body.
TThhee CChhuurrcchh iiss OOnnee
We are affirming the unity and solidarity
that of the Church.
 Charity ~ "binds everything together in perfect
harmony."
 United in fellowship ~ common celebration of
divine worship ~sacraments ~ helping one another
achieve salvation
 The Churches solidarity (the principle that we are
united as a family) originates in God, who as
Trinity is perfect in unity, one God in three persons.
 Scripture – (Jn 17:21) "That they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you,
may they also be one in us, . . . so that the world may know that you have sent me."

 total rejection of the Christian faith by
someone that is baptized.
 Period of Persecutions ~first three centuries of the
Church it was illegal to be a Christian and the
punishment could be death.
 Martyrdom ~ many martyrs could escape death if
they renounced Christianity.
 Those that didn’t renounce we call martyrs but
those that did became apostates.
 They would need to publically confess and do
penance to be welcomed back into the Church.
SScchhiissmm
(refusal of unity with the Pope)
 Those that are a part of schismatic Churches we call
separated brethren.
 Those Churches have elements of holiness and truth within
them to a degree.
 We pray for the return to Catholic unity amongst these
churches.
HHeerreessyy
 a deliberate and persistent denial of a truth of
the faith taught by the Church
 Catholic doctrine comes from revealed truths from
Christ entrusted to his Church.
 Heresy is the denial or changing of these
teachings, known as the Deposit of Faith.
 The word Heresy comes for the Greek word
meaning “choice” and means that the person is
picking and choosing their beliefs instead of
accepting what Jesus revealed.
EExxaammppllee ooff aa HHeerreessyy iinn tthhee EEaarrllyy CChhuurrcchh
 Gnosticism – comes from Greek word gnosis
meaning “knowledge”
 refers to a belief that salvation is achieved by
through secret knowledge.
 It taught that there were two gods: one Good
and the other evil.
EExxaammppllee ooff aa HHeerreessyy iinn tthhee EEaarrllyy CChhuurrcchh
 Today’s “new age” movement is a modern form
of Gnosticism.
 It teaches that hidden powers are released
through crystals and incantations.
 Fortune-telling, horoscopes, zodiac signs and
tarot cards are practices of new agers.
 It eliminates the need for salvation by Jesus.

The Church is holy has two aspects
Sanctity in the Church
 The word Holy means sacred and is where we get the
word saint, one who is in heaven.
Holy refers to something or someone that is set aside for
God.
Sinners in the Church
Church on earth is made up of sinners. We possess a
real but imperfect holiness.
The Churches holiness seeks to transform sinners
enabling them to become saints.
TThhee TThhiirrdd MMaarrkk:: TThhee CChhuurrcchh iiss CCaatthhoolliicc
 The word catholic with a little ‘c’ means
universal.
 The Church has universal authority from Christ
for a universal mission open to all people.(Mt. 28:18-19)
 The Church is not just for one nation or
ethnicity but is for all humanity.
TThhee FFoouurrtthh MMaarrkk:: TThhee CChhuurrcchh iiss AAppoossttoolliicc
 Refers to Christ’s selection of the Twelve
Apostles as the foundation of the Church.
 They were entrusted with Christ’s own authority
to teach, sanctify, and govern his Church
 The Apostles pass on their office to
successors.
 Threefold sense of the Apostolic Church
 Apostolic Foundation
 Apostolic Faith
 Apostolic Succession
CCoonncclluussiioonn
 These four marks – One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic – belong
to the Catholic Church alone.
 No other church can validly make this claim.
 The divisions within Christianity resulting from the Great Schism
with the Eastern Orthodox Churches, the Protestant
Reformation, and the continuous splintering of Protestantism
are wounds to the unity of the Church founded by Christ.
 Christians of good will must pray and work to heal the disunity
of the Church in keeping with Christ’s own prayer “that they
may all be one; even as thou, Father, are in me, and I in thee,
that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that
thou hast sent me” (Jn 17:21).
