An Evolutionary and Structural Analysis of the Connective Tissue Growth Facto...
The connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) gene is known to be important in cell growth, bone and cartilage differentiation, and wound healing. The molecular mechanisms and exact role that CTGF plays in these processes are still unclear. A greater understanding of the evolutionary history of this gene may help identify regions of the gene important at the molecular level of wound healing. Aligning CTGF sequences from 19 different species allowed for identification of regions in the CTGF gene that are conserved across evolutionary history. We have matched single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) detected by sequencing individuals at Plymouth State to these highly conserved regions. Surprisingly, we have identified 18 SNPs in humans within regions of the gene that are highly conserved. In addition, an excess of SNPs that cause amino acid changes in these regions suggests there is positive selective pressure on this gene in humans. Using a comparative protein modeling utility, RaptorX, we have identified SNPs that have significant impact on the protein structure of CTGF. Understanding evolutionary pressures on CTGF and identifying significantly different variants among humans can help increase understanding of this gene and its involvement in healing.

Population genetics of maize domestication, adaptation, and improvement
The domestication of maize ~10,000 years ago resulted in dramatic differentiation from its wild ancestor teosinte. Subsequently, maize spread rapidly across the Americas, adapting to a number of new environments. Beginning in the 20th century, maize has also been subjected to intensive artificial selection by breeders. Each of these periods of adaptation have left their mark on patterns of genetic diversity. I will discuss some of our recent work using population genetics to learn about the history and process of adaptation in maize.

Over the long period of time that life has existed on Earth, there have been a number of important or significant innovations including (but not limited to) endosymbiosis to create mitochondria and chloroplasts; multicellularity; adaptation to land by plants and animals; development of exoskeletons in arthropods, shells in molluscs, and notochords followed by vertebral columns in chordates and vertebrates; and bipedalism in the ancestry of humans. All of these had to come about by natural selection in response to changing environmental forces.

The types of species possible in the program are Plants (A,B,C), Herbivores (A,B,C), Omnivores (A,B) and one top Predator. You can control the diet of each by indicating what they feed on. By setting up different starting configurations you can investigate the evolution of this simulated ecological system.
• A. In a couple of sentences describe what happens when you start with only plants (A & B) and then all species of plants present.
• B. Describe how many herbivores and omnivores you added (and what they eat) in order to create an ecosystem in which all three plant species can coexist. This Dissertation explores the particular circumstances of Mirzapur, a region located in the
core of India. Mirzapur, with its varied terrains and abundant biodiversity, offers an optimal
environment for investigating the changes in vegetation cover dynamics. Our study utilizes
advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to
analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade.
The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus
of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in
these patterns indicate shifts in economic and social conditions. Monitoring such changes with the
help of Advanced technologies like Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems is

Ch 6 - 8 key concepts
- 1. Ch 6 – 8 Key Concepts Ch 6: 1. Know all the key vocabulary: Include on QSG: keystone species, ecological community 2. Include a labeled diagram of a food web on your QSG and on one side label the trophic levels( 1 – 4): 1 - autotrophs (producers), 2 - Herbivores (primary consumers), 3 - 4 Carnivores (secondary consumers) Pg 110 can be your guide, but I want yours to be terrestrial, not aquatic ( don’t forget to show decomposers in your web, at the bottom) (see pg. 108) 3. Know key case study examples of keystone species and include 3 in your QSG (wolves, bison should be two of those 3) 4. Know the two basic processes that must happen in any ecosystem, even the simplest. Ch 7: 1. QSG: Key factors that increase diversity, Key factors that decrease diversity (a fold out would be good for these!) see pg 133 2. QSG: Key Reasons to preserve biodiversity (see notes and Web of Life video) 3. Brush up on your justifications for preserving the env. (see pg 135) 4. Know the different types of biological diversity and be able to look at a diagram like Pg 123 and analyze it (Include: genetic diversity, habitat diversity and species diversity in your QSG. 5. Know the malaria story that exemplifies natural selection (pg 120) and the peppered moth (notes) 6. Look over the opening case study in Ch 7 and the critical thinking essay in Ch 6 (pg 113). 7. Review your basic biology and terms (biological evolution, mutation, natural selection, geographic isolation, divergent evolution, adaptive radiation (Ch 8)) 8. Review your basic ecology terms: (niche, fundamental vs realized niche, habitat, competitive exclusion, symbiosis, obligate symbionts) Be able to provide or analyze examples of these interactions. 9. # of species known as of now and possible # of species on planet (give a range) : QSG The following are not in your text: Include them in your QSG: 10.
