Constantinople was a difficult city for Muslim armies to defeat due to its strategic location surrounded by water on two sides and rugged terrain making it easily defended, thick and extensive city walls, and their use of Greek fire, a chemical weapon that burned upon impact and spread when doused with water. The Battle of Tours halted Muslim expansion into Europe when Charles Martel, nicknamed "the Hammer", led European troops to victory over the Muslims.
