The Bhopal Gas Tragedy was the world's worst industrial accident that occurred on December 3rd, 1984 in Bhopal, India. A leak of methyl isocyanate gas and other chemicals from the Union Carbide India Limited pesticide plant killed thousands of people. On the night of the leak, poisonous gases escaped from the plant and quickly spread through the city. Exposure to the gases caused severe damage to people's internal organs and lungs. Official estimates state that over 15,000 people died in the first three weeks. Survivors continue to suffer from increased rates of cancer and other health issues due to the toxic exposure.
