Causes of Hearing Loss
Types of Hearing Loss
There are 3 main types of Hearing Loss based on the site of lesion -
● Conductive Hearing Loss - caused due to problems in the outer or
middle ear.
● Sensorineural Hearing Loss - caused due to problems in the inner ear.
● Mixed Hearing Loss - caused due to problems in both the Conductive
(i.e., outer and/or middle ear) and the Sensorineural counterpart (i.e.,
in the inner ear).
Let’s take a look at the
causes of these
Three Types of Hearing Loss
respectively
Conductive Hearing Loss
● Malformation in outer ear,
ear canal, eardrum, or
middle ear structure
● Fluid build-up in middle ear
due to colds
● Ear infection like Otitis
Media
● Perforated eardrum
● Allergies
● Excessive accumulation of
earwax
● Foreign object in the ears
● Overexposure to loud noises
● Prescubysis (ageing)
● Malformation of the inner ear
● Hereditary reasons
● Head trauma
● Meniere's disease
● Autoimmune disease
● Otosclerosis
● Tumors
Sensorineural Hearing Loss
Mixed Hearing Loss
● When a Sensorineural Hearing Loss is compounded by
Conductive Hearing Loss
● Developmental abnormalities or malformations in both
the outer and/or the middle ear and the cochlea
● Sensorineural damage in the inner ear - such as the
cochlea
● Damage in the auditory nerve
