This document outlines a unit plan for teaching first grade students about butterflies and caterpillars. It analyzes the demographics and learning styles of the classroom. The main objective is for students to learn and describe key facts about butterflies by the end of the week through lessons, activities, readings, videos and presentations. The daily lessons include presentations on caterpillars and butterflies, watching a butterfly metamorphosis timelapse, reading "The Very Hungry Caterpillar", and a lesson on butterfly symmetry. Technology like Smartboards, computers and an ELMO document camera will support the lessons.

2. Analyze the Learner
This is a classroom of first graders. Most of the children
are 6 or 7 years old. We have one 8 year old boy in the
class. There are 14 girls in the classroom and 8 boys. 16
children are Caucasian, 4 are African American and 2 are
Latino.
The children are from the Appalachian area with the
exception of one student who is from southern Florida.
There are 2 students who identify as ADHD and one
student whom is an ESL student. Most students in the class
are kinesthetic learners while others are auditory or visual.

3. Main Objective
The students will analyze and describe what a butterfly
is and some common facts about them by the end of the
week. They will learn this from the required lessons, hands
on activities, readings, audios, videos, and presentations
with 100 % accuracy.

4. Day by Day
• Day 1- What is a caterpillar? My presentation on caterpillars
• Day 2- What is a butterfly? My presentation on butterflies and nectar
experiment
• Day 3-Watch a butterfly’s metamorphosis time lapse and draw
responses.
• Day 4-The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle and have the
students work on their metamorphosis necklaces.
• Day 5- Symmetry Lesson- My presentation on Symmetry in
butterflies. The students will draw a symmetrical butterfly.

5. Use of Technology
• Smartboard and Computers for the presentations and
video
• ELMO document camera for our read aloud book
• The art and craft supplies we will use on days 3,4, and 5
