2. Who We Are and What We’re About
It is the goal of World Piece Emporium to find the best materials and finished products from around
the world and bring them to the American crafter and artist, ensuring that the manufacturers and the
environment are respected by following Fair Trade and environmentally friendly practices.
Order Minimums: We know what it’s like to be a small business and so we have no minimum orders.
There are incentives to buying higher quantities but if you want to buy just one or two of something to
test it out, feel free.
New Products: We are constantly updating our product line and will send out additions to the catalogue
via email so make sure you give use your email address! If there is a product by one of the companies
in our catalogue that we don’t carry, or if there is a great item you think we should sell, please let us
know and we will do our best to offer it.
Product Variations: Please keep in mind that many of our products are handmade and consequently
we cannot guarantee that the dye lots will match or that two items are identical.
Payment: Payment will be accepted by Visa, MasterCard and Discover only. Payment is due at the time
of shipment.
Lead Time: Given the varied selection of items we offer we cannot guarantee that we will have everything
in stock. Leads times will vary depending on the product and where it is manufactured. If we don’t have
an item in stock it will usually take two weeks for items produced in the US and one to two months for
items made overseas. Please understand that most of our foreign manufacturers and very small and
rather rural and their turnaround is slower than a large manufacturing plant. Please check for updated
availability and lead times.
Make Fair Trade!
Fair Trade is the simple concept of paying people what
they deserve for the work they’ve done. That means giving
them a “living wage”, enough money to support them in
their local context, as well as safe and environmentally
friendly working conditions. WPE avidly supports Fair
Trade practices across the globe and strives to find suppliers
who are Fair Trade certified.
Green is our Favorite Color!
At WPE being green isn’t just a fashion statement, it’s
something we really believe in. We recycle, reuse and reduce
as much as possible, and it’s for that reason we rarely print
our marketing materials, rather we email them and/or
post them online, thus saving paper (and money too!)
It Feels Good to Do Good!
As the world grows closer together it seems like human
beings are growing further apart---the bigger the
businesses, the smaller the hearts. At WPE we want to
change that perception of business by embodying the spirit
of philanthropy. For every non-Fair Trade product that is
sold by WPE, a percentage of the profits will go to charity.
Please see the back cover for the list of charities we will be
supporting together!

3. Our Batiks, Our People
This is Aba and Ama, they are WPE’s chief batikers. They work in a
workshop the size of a booth at a trade show which has no electricity.
Even as successful batikers they make less than $200 a month
(combined). They work 10 hours a day 6 days a week to support
their families (Aba has four children and Ama has one.) Most of their
money goes to sending their children to school and putting food on
the table.
As World Piece Emporium believes that everyone, regardless of where
they live, should be paid appropriately for their work, all WPE’s fabric
is Fair Trade, meaning that producers are paid a “living wage.” In the
case of Aba and Ama, they are paid the retail rate for wholesale fabric
thus doubling their profits. So with every piece of batik you buy you
know that your money really is going to a good place!
Do you know who made the shirt your wearing? What about the
bag you’re carrying? Who grew the coffee you drink or the chocolate
you eat? And what about the fabric you quilt with?
The batiks are made in Cape Coast in the Central Region of Ghana which
has one of the highest poverty rates in the country. By supporting local
businesses WPE is able to influence positive change by giving people a
sustainable income rather than just a handout. This helps them grow
their business on the local market so they are able to better support
their families and employ more people.
WPE’s batiks are hand stamped and hand dyed on 100% cotton material.
They are machine washable and very durable. Their dyes are colorfast
although there may be a small initial bleed as there is with a lot of new
cloth.
