Bratislava's castle has existed since the 10th century but was reconstructed in the 18th century during Maria Theresia's reign. It burned down in 1811 leaving only ruins but was rebuilt in the 1950s-60s. Trenčín castle features the oldest part being a Romanesque rotunda and was owned by Matúš Čák Trenčiansky in the 14th century. Spiš castle is an extraordinary 4 hectare complex and one of the largest in Europe, dating back to the 11th-12th century.
