2. Plug & Charge
Plug and Charge is a software function that allows convenient charging solution, the process of
charging becomes more easier than refuelling ICE Cars.
Automatic identification of vehicles, authentication and billing for recharging EVs by just
insertion of charging guns provides consumers with a rich experience, thus plug and
charge needs to be offered at all charging points whether it be slow, fast or urban, highway
charging
Access to the feature requires availability of the technical capability by the car and the charging
point additionally, the vehicle owner must have an account within the system
Thus advancement and availability of the system critically depends on the agreement of EV
manufacturers to enable the feature within their models.
Benefit
Safety
Accessibility
The development of the feature has complex data security and compatibility issues for different
parties (manufacturers, charging networks and customers), for security purpose the software
must be developed tailor made following ISO 15118
Thus it is critical to standardize the charging software before implementation in charging
network, any malfuncvtion can lead to sensitive data leaks. In my view advancements in
charging technology must not be at the cost of data safety

Plug & Charge Europe: Companies
Involved
Plug and Charge was launched for public use at Ionity charging network by 2021 end.
The software solution for charging is considerably new in Europe.
Plug and Charge was introduced by Tesla in US in 2012, the technology came
considerably late in Europe with CharIn starting pilots with its partners in 2020
The widespread implementation of Plug and cgarge was hindered in Europe for a long
time due to the missing consensus among the industry and the pending standardization
of key elements
However with the launch of the project “Plug and Charge Europe” the situation has
changed, CHarIN EV has established a dedicated project team and has been working
to set up plug & Charge enable charge points throughout Europe
Many companies namely BMW AG, bp, ElaadNL, EDF, EnBW, Groupe Renault, IBIL,
Ingeteam, Innogy eMobility Solutions, Porsche AG and Volkswagen etc have joined
hands with CHarIN to commit towards implementation of Plug and Charge in Europe

Currently plug and charge is offered by CharIN at Ionity charging networks. The
customers need to sign a contract with a mobility service provider (MSP) to gain
access to plug and charge enabled charging networks
