The term "Data Lake" has become almost as overused and undescriptive as "Big Data". Many believe that centralizing datasets in HDFS makes a data lake, but then they struggle to realize any tangible value. This talk will redefine the "Data Lake" by describing four specific, key characteristics that we at Koverse have learned are crucial to successful enterprise data lake deployments. These characteristics are 1) indexing and search across all data sets, 2) interactive access for all users in the enterprise, 3) multi-level access control, and 4) integration with data science tools. These characteristics define a system that lets people realize value from their data versus getting lost in the hype. The talk will go on to provide a technical description of how we have integrated several projects, namely Apache Accumulo, Hadoop, and Spark, to implement an enterprise data lake with these key features.

Trying to keep up to date with developments, trends and opportunities even in narrow domains involves digesting and considering large amounts of textual information and often is beyond the reading capabilities of human experts. Large organisations may be able to cope with this challenge with dedicated analysis teams, but SMEs are overcharge with this information load.
Under the label „Technology Scouting“ we present an approach to employ modern semantic technologies and artificial intelligence to (semi) automate the collection, analysis and reporting of large document collections in a way that allows to derive important insights for technology-driven companies: Which technologies and markets are emerging or moving, how do my clients, partners and competitors operate?
After an introduction to the technological and methodological basis, we present experiences from past industry engagements where this aproach has be applied in production.
ODPi Egeria provides a framework for open metadata management, supporting many use cases in the governance of data in Data Lakes – as described in the Egeria webinar on 2nd June: “Data Lake Design with Egeria”. As described in that webinar, Egeria operates across the Data Lake, without needing centralization of metadata from the different tools into a central tool or repository.
Metadata frequently describe relationships between things like Assets, Schemas, Glossaries, and Terms – and these relationships form graphs. Egeria is distributed in nature, enabling you to see a federated view of the metadata contained in multiple tools and metadata repositories. As a result, the discrete graphs naturally federate to form a distributed graph. In this session, we’ll cover the Open Metadata Repository Services (OMRS) layer that enables Egeria to operate across this distributed graph.

A social model for Literature Access: Towards a weighted social network of au...Lamjed Ben Jabeur
This paper presents a novel retrieval approach for literature access based on social network analysis. In fact, we investigate a social model where authors represent the main entities and relationships are extracted from co-author and citation links. Moreover, we define a weighting model for social relationships which takes into account the authors positions in the social network and their mutual collaborations. Assigned weights express influence, knowledge transfer and shared interest between authors. Furthermore, we estimate document relevance by combing the document-query similarity and the document social importance derived from corresponding authors. To evaluate the effectiveness of our model, we conduct a series of experiments on a scientific document dataset that includes textual content and social data extracted from the academic social network "CiteULike". Final results show that the proposed model improves the retrieval effectiveness and outperforms traditional and social information retrieval baselines.
Measuring academic influence: Not all citations are equalAndre Vellino
The importance of a research article is routinely measured by counting how many times it has been cited. However, treating all citations with equal weight ignores the wide variety of functions that citations perform. The research described in this presentation – work that was performed with Xiaodan Zhu, Peter Turney (National Research Council Canada) and Daniel Lemire (TELUQ, Université du Québec à Montréal) – aims to automatically identify the subset of references in a bibliography that have a central academic influence on the citing paper. To achieve this we examined the effectiveness of a variety of features in the citing paper that might plausibly predict the academic influence of a citation. We asked a group of authors to identify the key references in their own work and created a dataset in which citations were labeled according to their academic influence. Using automatic feature selection with supervised machine learning, we developed a model for predicting academic influence that achieves good performance on this dataset using only four features. The performance of these features inspired us to design an influence-primed h-index (the hip-index). According to our experiments, the hip-index is a better indicator of researcher performance than the conventional h-index.

Usage-Based vs. Citation-Based Recommenders in a Digital LibraryAndre Vellino
There are two principal data sources for collaborative filtering recommenders in scholarly digital libraries: usage data obtained from harvesting a large, distributed collection of Open URL web logs and citation data obtained from the journal articles.
This study explores the characteristics of recommendations generated by implementations of these two methods: the `bX' system by ExLibris and an experimental citation-based recommender, Sarkanto. Recommendations from each system were compared according to their semantic similarity to the seed article that was used to generate them. Since the full text of the articles was not available for all the recommendations in both systems, the semantic similarity between the seed article and the recommended articles was deemed to be the semantic distance between the journals in which the articles were published. The semantic distance between journals was computed from the ``semantic vectors'' distance between all the terms in the full-text of the available articles in that journal and this study shows that citation-based recommendations are more semantically diverse than usage-based ones.
These recommenders are complementary since most of the time, when one recommender produces recommendations the other does not.
Intelligent Web Crawling (WI-IAT 2013 Tutorial)Denis Shestakov
<<< Slides can be found at http://www.slideshare.net/denshe/intelligent-crawling-shestakovwiiat13 >>>
-------------------
Web crawling, a process of collecting web pages in
an automated manner, is the primary and ubiquitous operation used by a large number of web systems and agents starting from a simple program for website backup to a major web search engine. Due to an astronomical amount of data already published on the Web and ongoing exponential growth of web content, any party that want to take advantage of massive-scale web data faces a high barrier to entry. We start with background on web crawling and the structure of the Web. We then discuss different crawling strategies and describe adaptive web crawling techniques leading to better overall crawl performance. We finally overview some of the challenges in web crawling by presenting such topics as collaborative web crawling, crawling the deep Web and crawling multimedia content. Our goals are to introduce the intelligent systems community to the challenges in web crawling research, present intelligent web crawling approaches, and engage researchers and practitioners for open issues and research problems. Our presentation could be of interest to web intelligence and intelligent agent technology communities as it particularly focuses on the usage of intelligent/adaptive techniques in the web crawling domain.

For our next ArcReady, we will explore a topic on everyone’s mind: Cloud computing. Several industry companies have announced cloud computing services . In October 2008 at the Professional Developers Conference, Microsoft announced the next phase of our Software + Services vision: the Azure Services Platform. The Azure Services Platforms provides a wide range of internet services that can be consumed from both on premises environments or the internet.
Session 1: Cloud Services
In our first session we will explore the current state of cloud services. We will then look at how applications should be architected for the cloud and explore a reference application deployed on Windows Azure. We will also look at the services that can be built for on premise application, using .NET Services. We will also address some of the concerns that enterprises have about cloud services, such as regulatory and compliance issues.
Session 2: The Azure Platform
In our second session we will take a slightly different look at cloud based services by exploring Live Mesh and Live Services. Live Mesh is a data synchronization client that has a rich API to build applications on. Live services are a collection of APIs that can be used to create rich applications for your customers. Live Services are based on internet standard protocols and data formats.

A tale of scale & speed: How the US Navy is enabling software delivery from l...sonjaschweigert1
Rapid and secure feature delivery is a goal across every application team and every branch of the DoD. The Navy’s DevSecOps platform, Party Barge, has achieved:
- Reduction in onboarding time from 5 weeks to 1 day
- Improved developer experience and productivity through actionable findings and reduction of false positives
- Maintenance of superior security standards and inherent policy enforcement with Authorization to Operate (ATO)
Development teams can ship efficiently and ensure applications are cyber ready for Navy Authorizing Officials (AOs). In this webinar, Sigma Defense and Anchore will give attendees a look behind the scenes and demo secure pipeline automation and security artifacts that speed up application ATO and time to production.
We will cover:
- How to remove silos in DevSecOps
- How to build efficient development pipeline roles and component templates
- How to deliver security artifacts that matter for ATO’s (SBOMs, vulnerability reports, and policy evidence)
- How to streamline operations with automated policy checks on container images
