Felicia Hemans wrote the poem "Casabianca" about the true story of Giacomo Casabianca, the 12-year old son of the captain of the French ship L'Orient. During the Battle of the Nile in 1798, L'Orient caught fire after being hit by British cannon fire. Though wounded, Captain Casabianca ordered his son to remain by the mainmast as the ship burned. Both the captain and Giacomo perished as the ship exploded, with the boy obeying his father's order to remain at his post until the end.

US Navy in WW II; session iv; the struggle for the MedJim Powers
In many ways this battle is the turning point in the European Theater. The story is a real cliffhanger. I also use the visual material in my Annapolis textbook to demonstrate the interpretation of charts and graphs.
Blow Up With The Ship - Wilkie Collins.pptxDhruvita1
'Blow up with the ship' is a short story by 19th century writer Wilkie Collins. It is a thriller story. The story is narrated in first person. The narrator was sent to sea when still a boy and became a mate at the age of twenty five.
2. • How many of us knew that Casabianca
was not the “boy” who “ stood on the
burning deck”, but the boy’s father?!!!
Here is the background…
3.
4. • In 1798, Casabianca captained the O rie nt, the
flagship of the French fleet which
carried Napoleon Bonaparte and his army
to Egypt. Days after their arrival to Egypt, the
French ships were attacked by the British and
the Battle of Aboukir Bay broke out.
• During the fight, the O rie nt was set ablaze by
English cannon fire and exploded at around 11
o'clock, killing everybody aboard. The blast was
so great it was felt 15 miles away in Alexandria.
5.
6. • Although his ship was on fire and he was
wounded, Casabianca was determined to fight
on to the end. He told his son, twelve-year-old
Giacomo, who was on board, to remain in the
shelter of the mainmast until he told him to leave.
• Soon, however, Casabianca was dead and the
ship was a blazing furnace, but Giacomo
remained at his post waiting for the order which
never came.
