On December 6, 1917, a collision between a French munitions ship called the Mont-Blanc and a Norwegian vessel called the Imo outside of Halifax Harbour caused a fire on the Mont-Blanc. The crew abandoned the ship as it drifted towards the city. About 20 minutes later, as spectators gathered, the ship exploded in a massive blast that instantly killed over 1,600 people and injured 9,000 others. The explosion destroyed over 1,600 homes and damaged thousands more in the city. An inquiry later found both ships at fault for the collision and disaster.
