Carrie Abstract For her senior seminar project, the author will showcase the costume, hair, and makeup design she created for the MSU production of Carrie: The Musical. She will present a costume bible and design board displaying the concept, designs, and production execution. Her experience in theatre has taught her how to manage fast-paced environments and delegate work to achieve cohesive results. After struggling to balance her commitments to theatre and school, she discovered her passion for baking and event planning, which helped her maintain balance. She had a dream of combining her loves of theatre, art, and baking into a business planning tea parties and costumes.

Carrie Abstract
For my Senior seminar project, I will be showcasing the costume, hair, and make-up
design I have done for the MSU Production of Carrie: The Musical. For the review of this project
I have a costume bible and a design board displaying the concept, designs, and production
execution. The task I have chosen, in my opinion, emphasized the talents I have developed as a
student designer rather well. It explores multi-faceted design and an allied design of hair and
make-up, as well as exercises my organizational skills and ability to conduct myself working as a
part of a large group collaborative project. A musical is complicated in the sense that sound,
scenery, costumes, lights and props all have to be balanced and suit the show, all the while
juggling large casts of people. The details can become overwhelming at a moment’s notice.
My career goal is to build my own bakery, café, and party planning conglomerate. My
experience in theatre has taught me the how to manage fast paced working environments,
creative balance a delegating certain segments of work to other people that will achieve a
cohesive ending. As a theatre major I was able to express my creative side and successfully
execute design ideas in a manner that was easy to show my creative process as well. To build a
business it is imperative to show process and achieve an optimum level of organization, social
recognition and marketability. As a part of this dept. I have learned to market myself and my
work. My minor of visual communications only aided me further in successfully advertising my
talents. There are many facets of my business but every part is utilizing what I have been
learning since high school. When I was in high school I was in DECA a marketing fraternity.
While I was a part of this organization I won a 4th regional marketing management award for
my advertisement planning and marketing program of my design. High school was also a very
artistic time for me and I was given numerous rewards for my art, I wanted to assure that
whatever I did in life that the skills I worked so hard to learn and master would be used daily in
building my future.
I initially came to MSU for Marketing and quickly was attracted to the art program.
During my first semester I struggled with only focusing on a part of my self while my structured
marketing background fell to the wayside. This is when I discovered the theatre program at
MSU, and immediately I was enthralled. The structured and fast paced schedule, the
organization, and the creativity was everything I was looking for. After jumping into the
department head first I soon realized that it became too stressful for me to constantly sustain. I
found myself losing the whimsical side of theatre due to the pace and keeping up with the fact
that I was a full time student. I loved it so much it became a full time job. My grades started to
suffer due to my overcommitting. I craved to set my own schedule and do what I loved while

2. maintaining balance so I wouldn’t burn myself out. As I break to school and theatre, I began to
bake. I had always loved it and my family was brought together by it. It helped me to focus on
other people in my life rather than just myself.
It was at the cross road of three loves that, I had a fortuitous dream of a business where I had
planned a Victoria style tea party for a teen girl’s birthday party. I had planned, catered, and
even built the costumes and decorated. Everything I loved was in one whimsical dream. It was
at that time that I knew exactly what I’d do for the rest of my life. To be so authentic as to be in
the moment and create the closest experience to that time is much like the magic of the
theatre, that is my dream, my life’s magic, and my reason for being.
In my final I will submit a portfolio for my design work, along with my assorted design resume. I
will also have, for viewing, not for grading, my cake resume and portfolio.
