2. The World of INFERTILITY….
In 2008, the U.S. economy plummeted into a
recession, causing:
Financial hardships for every sector of business -
including healthcare.
The fields of medicine hit hardest, those considered
"elective" – i.e plastic surgery and infertility
treatment.
Programs for “cash” patients undergoing treatment
were very limited.
Options included –
Single ART Cycles – Full Fee For Service (OR)
Shared Risk/Refund Program – Purchase a multi-cycle
package at discounted fee.
3. The World of INFERTILITY…
Single Cycle Options – Range from $10,000 to
$15,000 + Extra costs for pre-testing, medications,
and Micro-techniques (ICSI, AZH, Cryo, etc.)
Includes 1-Full ART Cycle
NO Refunds-regardless of outcome
Shared Risk/Refund Options – Range from $30,000 to
$40,000 (or more) + Extra costs for pre-testing,
medications, and Micro-techniques.
Includes Multiple Cycles – Typically 3 Fresh + 3 FET’s (if
patient cryopreserved extra embryos)
If NOT pregnant after undergoing ALL included cycles –
a “portion” of package cost is “refunded” (i.e. 50%,
60%, or more).
4. Shared Risk sounds…. Like a great option. Right?
Well, financial hardships and other funding
restraints hamper patients from paying $30K-$40K
up front, AND
Clinics and patients notoriously neglect to read
the fine print for these programs:
The “FINE PRINT”…..
Clinics- Take Deep Discounts and Pay Excessive Fees:
Deep discounts – applied to clinic cycles/services by
3rd party company when “packaging” to sell.
Excessive Fees- steep monthly partnership fees to offer
program, AND Penalty Fees (on top of discounted services)
for failed patient cycles – paid to 3rd Party Company.
SHARED RISK – The
5. SHARED RISK – The
Patients – Eligibility criteria, Refund Policy and Extra
Services:
Eligibility - only patients most likely to get pregnant with
the 1st treatment cycle will qualify to participate.
Extra Services – costs for pre-testing, medications, and
Micro-techniques - not included in the “package fee”
and add $8K, $10K, $15K to overall cost
Refund Policy – No refund for Unused Cycles, pre-
testing, medications, or Micro-techniques.
If patient does NOT get pregnant – only receive a portion of
the base package fee - NO refund on additional/extra
services or medications.
If patient DOES get pregnant– NO Refund (period). I.E. - If
pregnant on 1st Cycle – patient forfeits ALL monies paid –
Essentially….pay $30,000 to $40,000 for a SINGLE cycle!
6. Financially – patients couldn’t afford high
priced Shared Risk programs, and today, most
still can’t….
Majority of Patients either don’t need (or)
don’t want ART treatment:
2015’s research shows - less than 5% of all infertility
patients will seek or use IVF treatment.
This leaves – over 95% of infertility patients able to, or
desiring to use alternative therapies!
So, what options are there?
ART Treatment Then & Now…
