Careers in Lifespan Development Essay Assignment
Essential Elements
To prepare for this assignment, you will first select a career, period of development, a
developmental theory, and specific topic from the textbook. The specific topic must be clearly
relevant to both the career and developmental period you selected.
1. In your textbook, see Chapter 1 Appendix, Careers in Lifespan Development (p. 43).
From the list of careers, identify one career of interest to you. You may ask the instructor
for permission to select a career not on the list if it requires knowledge of lifespan
development. Unless you receive permission for a different career, you must select one
from the list in the textbook.
2. Select one period of developmental (p.14) that would be encountered by a professional in
the career you selected. Some careers (i.e. geriatric physician, neonatal nurse, preschool
teacher) might be limited to one developmental period. Other careers may potentially
work with individuals across several periods of development and you will need to choose
one. Either way, you will select one of the following: infancy, early childhood,
middle/late childhood, adolescence, early adulthood, middle adulthood, late adulthood.
3. From the textbook, select a topic of interest. It should be an issue that will likely be
addressed by a person in the career you selected. A list of potential topics is provided
below but you are not limited to those listed. This list should give you a good idea of the
kinds of topics that are acceptable. If you are unsure about a different topic, just ask.
4. Select at least one major theory of development. You will explain how the theory might
be used to help guide you in your work with an individual in the period of development
you chose. These may include Piaget, Erickson, or Bronfenbrenner. If your chosen period
of development is late adulthood, you might consider activity theory, socioemotional
selectivity theory, or selective optimization with compensation theory (pp. 587-588).
Potential Topics
This is not an exhaustive list. There are other topics in the textbook. If you are uncertain, ask the instructor.
• Prenatal care
• Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
• Preschool/ early childhood education

In developmental psychology, the focus of research is often to examine change over time. Developmental psychologists have some special research designs that allow them to accomplish this. Two such research designs are the cross-sectional design and the longitudinal design. A cross-sectional design measures different groups of people of different ages at the same time. A longitudinal design measures the same group of people at different ages and also, therefore, at different times.

Personal Philosophy of Education Paper: Instructions & Rubrics
This assignment is due on Monday of Module/Week 7, 11:59 pm (EST).
Using feedback from the other written assignments, the instructions for the Personal Philosophy of Education paper, and the grading rubric for the final Personal Philosophy of Education Paper, write this paper. This is the benchmark assignment for this course, so do your best work. The paper is to be 4 to 5 double-spaced pages (not including the title page, abstract, and reference page) in current APA format and include a minimum of 4 references. Submit the paper in Blackboard through SafeAssign by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on
Monday
of Module/Week 7.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION PAPER:
This paper is a statement of your personal philosophy of education, which should focus on the purpose of education, which is
why
education is carried out and not so much
how
it is carried out. Your purpose of education is to emphasize the long-range impact you believe education should have on individuals and on society—the outcome of education. As you convey your philosophy, you are to focus on its outcome rather than on the methods, practices, instruction, or classroom activities. Those are tools of carrying out your philosophy; therefore, a simple discussion of teaching strategies does not make up your philosophy of education.
As an academic paper, it is to be supported by the body of knowledge in the field, which is to include references to the literature from educational philosophy, psychology, curriculum, and learning theory. Treat this as a position statement, a persuasive paper. Make declarative statements of “ought” and “should.”
HEADINGS:
To ensure the paper meets the requirements of the grading rubric, you are to include the elements listed below. Note the required headings that are to be placed in the same order in your paper as they appear in the outline below.

case study of an adult with developmental challenges. Then, create a 5–7-page intervention plan based on evidence-based strategies that have proven effective in similar cases and make projections of possible long-term impacts that current challenges may produce across the individual's remaining lifespan.
Theorists and researchers focus on these phases to understand the developmental trajectories of adults:
Early adulthood, often referred to as young adulthood or emerging adulthood, is a period from 18 to 25 years, where the focus on relationships and career choice and success can become primary. Young adulthood is often understood by applying lifespan development theories that help in understanding social-emotional and career development issues that emerge in young adulthood. Examples are adult attachment theory, Holland's personality type theory linked to career development, Super's vocational self-concept stages, as well as Erikson's stage of identity development.
Middle adulthood, or
midlife
is a period where, according to developmental theory, there is evidence of growth, maintenance, and regulation of loss in various contexts such as family and work. Middle adulthood is often understood by applying lifespan development theories that help in understanding the cognitive and social development issues that emerge in midlife. Concepts of maintenance and loss as well and coping strategies linked to stress such as Hobfoll's theory of conservation of resources (COR) are often useful. Cognitive changes are often understood in terms of fluid and crystallized intelligence. Social development is often understood in terms of Erikson's concept of generativity.
Adulthood or
late
adulthood is a period when people move into their 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s, with various challenges and losses that can define developmental trajectories. Late adulthood is often understood by applying lifespan development theories that help in understanding the gains and losses that are hallmarks of this stage of adulthood, such as the lifespan theory developed by Baltes and colleagues.

PSY 560 Final Project: Student-Authored Article Guidelines and Rubric
Overview
Your Mission
As a graduate student in a psychology program at this university, you have the opportunity to create scholarship for potential publication of your student-
authored article in a scholarly journal such as the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin or Personality and Social Psychology Review. It is important to note
that in the example journals, all student-authored papers that are accepted for publication in these journals are automatically eligible to receive a student
publication award from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. Take the time to examine some quality sample publications from previous winners,
which can be found here:
Ma-Kellams, C., Spencer-Rodgers, J., & Peng, K. (2011). I am against us? Unpacking cultural differences in ingroup favoritism via dialecticism. Personality and
Social Psychology Bulletin, 37, 15–27.
Shu, L. L., Gino, F., & Bazerman, M. H. (2011). Dishonest deed, clear conscience: When cheating leads to moral disengagement and motivated forgetting.
Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, 37, 330–349.
Babbitt, L. G., & Sommers, S. R. (2011) Framing matters: Contextual influences on interracial interaction outcomes. Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, 37,
1233–1244.
The final project for this course is the creation of a scholarly, student-authored article that is ready for potential submission to a real-world organization or
publication that focuses on this subfield of psychology. For purposes of this course, we will focus on the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP), an
organization founded in 1974 when the leadership of the American Psychological Association decided to incorporate an independent organization to focus on
this subfield. Remember, this is an article for potential publication in one of these journals. You are NOT required to submit your completed article to the
publication as part of this project. However, you are strongly encouraged to continue to develop your article and conduct further research upon completion of
this course as you move forward in your academic work for possible future submission.
In this component, this assessment will measure student competency with respect to the following course outcomes:
Defend a position on the role personality psychology plays in the broader field of psychology and its relevancy to practical issues
Propose appropriate solutions to complex problems that draw upon contemporary principles and current research in personality psychology
Analyze foundational theories of personality for their historical context, theorist’s biases, research methods, and relevance to current thinking in the
field
Evaluate the continued relevancy and accuracy of classic theories of psychology in the context of contemporary research findings
Assess personality psychology practices in terms of th ...

Directions: Please answer each question in 150 words and each discussion question in 100 words. Must use in-text citation in APA style. This is a STEM Education Course.
Discussion: Curiosity is a big part of STEM instruction. How will you encourage curiosity and discovery in your classroom?
Response 1: (Instructor asked) how do you learn about each student's "passion?" In what ways do you discover their true interests with respect to each topic?
Response 2: (Stefanie said)- Encouraging curiosity within the classroom may lead down rabbit holes, take a well-designed lesson plan in a different direction, and take the class focus off of what needs to be covered based on testing requirements. When we are curious about things, we ask questions. One question can lead to another and another, which may mean veering off topic, but also increases engagement and curiosity. Planning for extra time in each activity or designated time at the end of class where students can ask their questions can help students to affirm their desire to learn but not deter the whole lesson (Runn, 2016).
Encouraging creativity and modeling curiosity help to demonstrate ways to be a lifelong learner and how to remain curious about the world we live in (Runn, 2016). Asking students to find real-life examples for the material being taught requires more work than if the teacher just hands them the information. The way homework is assigned can also be a way to encourage curiosity and discovery, offering students multiple avenues to show what they know and an opportunity to learn in a way that is best for the (Runn, 2016).
Paying attention to what really sets a student’s heart on fire, encouraging them to explore new things and helping them to make connections between the information they are learning in class and how it could help and influence their future is one of the most important pieces of teaching. Some students may be more curious than others, but stay present and fight to create passionate, curious students, one class at a time (Runn, 2016).
Response 3: (Haley said)- There are different types of curiosity that students may develop while they are in school including "joyous exploration, need to know curiosity, social curiosity, accepting anxiety curiosity, and thrill-seeking curiosity," (Eva, 2018). In order to help students explore their curiosity of a subject it is important that we, as educators, endorse their love of knowledge and encourage their curiosity. Curiosity has been described as having a hungry mind, and the need or want to know more information on a topic, content, or subject matter. Students that are more curious are more likely to excel in the classroom because they are more motivated to learn. When we become curious it causes more retention of knowledge. To encourage this in the classroom, it is important to welcome questions and risk taking. Some students may be shy or uncomfortable with challenging themselves or speaking out loud. We should encourag ...

Autism is a complicated progressive disability. Researchers think that Autism exhibits itself during the age of 18 to 36 months old. The illness is the effect of a neurological condition that has an influence on natural brain performance, effecting promotion of the individual’s social and communication abilities. A student with an autism disorder will have a problem with non-verbal skills, and difficulty with activities which involve an environment of play and/or joking. They could have uncommon replies to society, connections to items, refusal to accept an adjustment in their daily routines, and severe behavior challenges.
Autism Challenges
I am Interested in understanding Autism behavior challenges to improve classroom management. As a Special Education teacher understanding Autism behaviors can be very beneficial. A projection of 1 in every 68 citizens in the country has various types of autism; boys are more prevalent than girls. Several professionals think that this (ASD) is linked hereditary or through the atmosphere. Studies show in a classroom of 18 or more. Typically, at least two of the classroom children for each one student are diagnosed with (ASD). Children with (ASD) show disruptive behaviors, and many of them have problems like harming self and anger tantrum. Behaviors form anxiety for parents and specialists, because it inconsistent with the development of desired behaviors and communication skills (DSM-5, 2013), and have risks on child himself and others. Findings show after researching over a hundred teachers in a public major school of students who strugglers with ASDs.
Lack of classroom management, and inconsistent strategies played a huge factor in behaviors. An effort to be made by schools to address the teacher’s perception of causes of challenging behavior as it has an influence on their choice of management strategies. Also, the teachers agreed that the behavior was learned,
and could be improved, but they did not often use strategies that are commonly considered to be effective, at least within the fields of ABA and PBS (Baron, Groden, & Lipsitt 2006). Consistency and reinforcement, they are solutions for resolving occurring behaviors, which increase the likelihood that behavior will continue to occur or occur more often (Cooper, Heron, & Heward, 2007).

Definition of Keywords is described as thoughts in a subject area that drive and tell what your content in tells. Phrased or keywords are put into the “search queries” or search engine to generate various types of information, descriptions, film, and duplicates pertaining to your content. The keywords are vital to the search because they are the key player among what a person is probing for and the matter provide to fill up that need. The significa ...

Research Paper Options and GuidelinesFor the individual final pa.docxmandygoatesxio0
Research Paper Options and Guidelines
For the individual final paper, students can choose one of the following four options (A, B, C, and D).
All papers should be a minimum of (6) typed pages and a maximum of (10) pages.
In addition to your 6-10 pages,
please include a title page, a table of contents, and reference pages.
At least 2/3 of the references should have been published within the last 5 years.
Papers should be in APA format, double-spaced using Times New Roman, size 12 for the font.
Option A:
The purpose of this final paper is to enhance your knowledge and understanding of normal development during adolescence or adulthood. You should select a developmental task (or tasks) appropriate for either adolescence or adulthood.
For example, the development of an identity is a task that typically occurs during adolescence in Erickson’s theory of psychosocial development. You should review the literature related to this developmental task and write a comprehensive literature review that addresses not only the traditional views and theoretical explanations for this task, but also explores non-traditional explanations as well. For example, if you choose the issue of spousal abuse, you must address the traditional views outlined in the literature which define the cause and role of battering in interpersonal relationships including the alternative view of some theorists that violence in relationships can be viewed as acceptable behavior.
In so doing, you must identify the value systems underlying both traditional and alternative views on the issues. Your literature review may focus on normal development in adolescence or adulthood, or abnormal development.
Illustrating your literature with case examples, either from your field experiences or the literature is required.
For example, you may focus on abnormal development in adolescence, providing a case example of how teenage pregnancy, substance abuse, or depression may derail the normal development process.
Additionally, each student will be responsible for interviewing a MSW faculty member who has experience with your topic to learn how the individual applies and integrates knowledge and values relating to human behavior and the social environment in their practice with clients with your selected developmental task.
The student must also discuss the implications of the research for social work practice and social policy. (See Objectives 1, 7, 8, 11, 12).
If you should use a work experience or field experience, please protect the identity of all individuals involved by changing the names, dates, and locales to protect the innocent persons involved.
Option B:
Use developmental/ecological theory to address a psychosocial problem.
Problem description
: Identify a psychosocial problem, e.g., a phenomenon of psychosocial pain or distress, experienced in a particular population group, in particular individuals, or in families. Based on 5-10 background readings, articl.

You have recently been promoted to Health Services Manager at Three Mountains Regional Hospital, a small hospital located in a mid-size city in the Midwest. Three Mountains is a general medical and surgical facility with 400 beds. Last year there were approximately 62,000 emergency visits and 15,000 admissions. More than 6,000 outpatient and 10,000 inpatient surgeries were performed.
An important aspect of the provider/patient relationship pertains to open communication and trust. Patients want to know that their doctors and the support staff associated with their care understand their wishes and will abide by them. Ideally, these conversations happen well before an emergency or procedure takes place; however, often times this information is missing from a patient's file. As part of Three Mountains' initiative to build trust with their patients, an increased emphasis has been placed on obtaining living wills from the patient as part of the intake process to ensure that the healthcare team has written directives of the patient's wishes in case of incapacitation. You will be creating a living will for a patient and provide educational information as to why the patient should fill it out during the admission process before a procedure.
Introduction:
Explain the definition of a living will and its key components. This section will provide an educational overview of the document for the patient.
Living Will Template:
Create a living will that can serve as a template to the patients. This should cover the basic treatment issues such as resuscitation, feeding tubes, ventilation, organ and tissue donations, etc. Provide instructions in the template that can be easily altered, depending on each patient's wishes.

Analyze ethical and legal dilemmas that healthcare workers may encounter in the medical field.
Instructions
Summary:
In this section, you will discuss the importance of this document and encourage patients to complete it. Address how this document ensures that a patient's wishes are known and followed by the healthcare team.

Competences, Learning Theories and MOOCs:
Recent Developments in Lifelong Learning
Karl Steffens
Introduction
We think of our societies as ‘knowledge societies’ in which lifelong learning is
becoming increasingly important. Lifelong learning refers to the idea that people
not only learn in schools and universities, but also in non-formal and informal
ways during their lifespan. The concepts of lifelong learning and lifelong education
began to enter the discourse on educational policies in the late 1960s (Tuijnman
& Boström, 2002). However, these are related, but distinct concepts. As Lee (2014,
p. 472) notes ‘the terminological change (from lifelong education, continuing
education and adult education, to lifelong learning) reflects a conceptual departure
from the idea of organised educational provision to that of a more individualised
pursuit of learning’.
One of the first important documents on lifelong learning was the report of the
International Commission on the Development of Education to UNESCO in
1972, titled ‘Learning to be. The world of education today and tomorrow’. In his
introductory letter to the Director-General of UNESCO, the chairman of the
Commission, Edgar Faure, stated that the work of the Commission was based on
four assumptions (see Elfert pp. and Carneiro pp. in this issue). The first was
related to the idea that there was an international community which was united by
common aspirations and the second was the belief in democracy and in education
as its keystones. The third was ‘that the aim of development is the complete
fulfilment of man, in all the richness of his personality, the complexity of his forms
of expression and his various commitments — as individual, member of a family
and of a community, citizen and producer, inventor of techniques and creative
dreamer’. The last assumption was that ‘only an over-all, lifelong education can
produce the kind of complete man, the need for whom is increasing with the
continually more stringent constraints tearing the individual asunder’ (Faure,
1972, p. vi).
Following the Faure Report, the UNESCO Institute for Education, which
was founded in Germany in 1951, started to focus on lifelong learning and
subsequently became the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL, http://
uil.unesco.org/home/). It was under its leadership that a formal model of lifelong
education was developed and published in the book ‘Towards a System of Life-
long Education’ (Cropley, 1980). The concept of lifelong learning also became
manifest in the ‘Education for All’ (EFA) agenda that was launched at the World
Conference on Education for All which took place in Jomtien (Thailand) in
1990 (Inter-Agency Commission, 1990). Ten years later, at the World Education
Forum in Dakar (Senegal) in 2000, the Dakar Framework for Action was
designed ‘to enable all individuals to realize their right to learn and to fulfil their
responsibility to contribute to the development of their society’ (UNESCO,
2000, p..

Compensation, Benefits, Reward & Recognition Plan for V.P. Operations
Introduction
Base Salary Range
For the position of VP of Operations, the National Average Salary is $122,624. In San Francisco, the average is higher and placed at $155,946. This amount is 16% higher than the National Average (Payscale, 2016). The reason for this increase is because of experience and geography. These are the two prime factors that impact the pay scale. Another major factor is the employer. Most employers base their decision to hire an individual on the experience they bring with them. Of course, with more experience, higher pay is required. With our company cutting cost a less experienced individual would be the best fit for the position.
Standard Employee Benefit
In many cases, your employee benefits could be the turning point for a prospective employee. This benefit is a vital portion of any employee packet. These valuable benefits are used as a blanket of security in the case of any sickness, injury, unemployment, old age, or death (Gomez-Mejia, Balkin & Cardy, 2015, p. 362). There is a significant difference between incentives and benefits: benefits are financial and nonfinancial compensations that are indirect to the employee. To have a competitive strategy Blossoms Up! must align their profits with the compensation package that has been already put in place. This action will help provide flexibility to the amount and the benefits available (Gomez-Mejia et al., 2015).
There are also some benefits that most companies are legally obligated to provide. Three benefits are required regardless of the number of employees that the company has. These interests involve social security, workers compensation, and unemployment insurance (Gomez-Mejia et al., 2015). Other laws must be adhered to when dealing with a certain number of individuals. When a company has 50 or more employee they must have the Family and Medical Leave Act in place and since its induction in 2015 the Affordable Care Act for Health Insurance for companies with 20 or more employees. For the health insurance to be considered standard medical, vision and dental plans must be made available to the business. These programs that must be regarded as being under the Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) or a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) (Gomez-Mejia et al., 2015).
There are some voluntary benefits that we can include. We are already looking into adding a pension package using the Defined Contribution Plan as well as the 401(K) plan (Gomez-Mejia et al., 2015). Life insurance is another excellent benefit that could be added to the package as well as short-term and long-term disability insurance. Adding Vacation and PTO, and Holiday pay is .

The document discusses the importance of physical security for computer and network security. It notes that physical access negates all other security measures, as an attacker can directly access systems if they have physical proximity. It outlines several ways an attacker could exploit physical access, such as using bootable media like LiveCDs to access tools and directly image hard drives. The document emphasizes that physical security is foundational and must be carefully designed and implemented to protect against unauthorized access to systems and data.

THE SACRIFICE HOW PRO-PALESTINE PROTESTS STUDENTS ARE SACRIFICING TO CHANGE T...indexPub
The recent surge in pro-Palestine student activism has prompted significant responses from universities, ranging from negotiations and divestment commitments to increased transparency about investments in companies supporting the war on Gaza. This activism has led to the cessation of student encampments but also highlighted the substantial sacrifices made by students, including academic disruptions and personal risks. The primary drivers of these protests are poor university administration, lack of transparency, and inadequate communication between officials and students. This study examines the profound emotional, psychological, and professional impacts on students engaged in pro-Palestine protests, focusing on Generation Z's (Gen-Z) activism dynamics. This paper explores the significant sacrifices made by these students and even the professors supporting the pro-Palestine movement, with a focus on recent global movements. Through an in-depth analysis of printed and electronic media, the study examines the impacts of these sacrifices on the academic and personal lives of those involved. The paper highlights examples from various universities, demonstrating student activism's long-term and short-term effects, including disciplinary actions, social backlash, and career implications. The researchers also explore the broader implications of student sacrifices. The findings reveal that these sacrifices are driven by a profound commitment to justice and human rights, and are influenced by the increasing availability of information, peer interactions, and personal convictions. The study also discusses the broader implications of this activism, comparing it to historical precedents and assessing its potential to influence policy and public opinion. The emotional and psychological toll on student activists is significant, but their sense of purpose and community support mitigates some of these challenges. However, the researchers call for acknowledging the broader Impact of these sacrifices on the future global movement of FreePalestine.

Careers in Lifespan Development Essay Assignment Essent.docx
1. Careers in Lifespan Development Essay Assignment
Essential Elements
To prepare for this assignment, you will first select a career,
period of development, a
developmental theory, and specific topic from the textbook. The
specific topic must be clearly
relevant to both the career and developmental period you
selected.
1. In your textbook, see Chapter 1 Appendix, Careers in
Lifespan Development (p. 43).
From the list of careers, identify one career of interest to you.
You may ask the instructor
for permission to select a career not on the list if it requires
knowledge of lifespan
development. Unless you receive permission for a different
career, you must select one
from the list in the textbook.
2. Select one period of developmental (p.14) that would be
2. encountered by a professional in
the career you selected. Some careers (i.e. geriatric physician,
neonatal nurse, preschool
teacher) might be limited to one developmental period. Other
careers may potentially
work with individuals across several periods of development
and you will need to choose
one. Either way, you will select one of the following: infancy,
early childhood,
middle/late childhood, adolescence, early adulthood, middle
adulthood, late adulthood.
3. From the textbook, select a topic of interest. It should be an
issue that will likely be
addressed by a person in the career you selected. A list of
potential topics is provided
below but you are not limited to those listed. This list should
give you a good idea of the
kinds of topics that are acceptable. If you are unsure about a
different topic, just ask.
4. Select at least one major theory of development. You will
explain how the theory might
be used to help guide you in your work with an individual in the
period of development
3. you chose. These may include Piaget, Erickson, or
Bronfenbrenner. If your chosen period
of development is late adulthood, you might consider activity
theory, socioemotional
selectivity theory, or selective optimization with compensation
theory (pp. 587-588).
Potential Topics
This is not an exhaustive list. There are other topics in the
textbook. If you are uncertain, ask the instructor.
• Prenatal care
• Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
• Preschool/ early childhood education
• Autism
• Child Maltreatment
• Childhood Obesity
• Special Education
• Learning Disabilities
• ADHD
• Emotional and Behavioral Disorders
4. (identify one specific disorder)
• Intellectual Disabilities
• Giftedness
• Childhood stress and trauma
• Peer status
• Bullying
• Baumrind’s Parenting Styles
• Gender issues
• Adolescent sexual behavior
• Teen pregnancy
• Sex education
• Substance abuse
• Juvenile delinquency
• Adolescent substance abuse
• Adolescent depression
• Sexual harassment
• Sexual assault
• Topics related to health in early adulthood
5. • Topics related to sexuality in adulthood
2
• Topic related to marriage and successful
relationships
• Topics related to health in middle adulthood
• Retirement
• Alzheimer’s disease
• Depression and suicide in late adulthood
• Topics related to health in late adulthood
• Death and dying issues (hospice, palliative
care, euthanasia)
************************Essay
Instructions*************************
After selecting the four elements described above, write an
essay describing how knowledge of
lifespan development will inform your work as a professional in
the chosen career. Explain how
6. you would apply your knowledge of human development to meet
the needs of an individual in
one specific period of development. The needs of the individual
will be determined not only by
the period of development but also by the topic/issue you
selected. Include the application of at
least one major theory of development in working with the
individual. Explain how you will use
theory to guide your work with the person in the specific period
of development. Do not assume
the reader has prior knowledge about the career, theory or topic.
• The first paragraph should briefly introduce the essay and end
with a thesis statement.
See the thesis statements handout for more information.
• After the introductory paragraph, the first main section of the
essay should describe the
career and include why a knowledge of human development is
necessary for the
profession. The section should begin with a heading that
identifies the career. The
education/training requirements for the career should also be
described. The professional
7. association applicable to the chosen career must be used as a
main source of information
in this section. You should find the required information on the
website of the relevant
professional association. See the handout on professional
associations for examples. In
addition, you must include information from the Bureau of
Labor Statistics
(https://www.bls.gov/ooh/home.htm) for information about the
career. Both of these
sources must be cited using APA format.
• In the second section, describe one period of development
(e.g., infancy, early childhood,
middle/late childhood, adolescence, early adulthood, middle
adulthood, or late
adulthood). The section should begin with a heading that
identifies the developmental
period. Explain why knowledge of that specific developmental
period is important for
one to be effective in the career/profession. Include examples of
how such knowledge
would be applied to an individual in that period of development.
This may include
8. knowledge of cognitive, socioemotional, or biological
development. At least one of the
three developmental processes must be addressed, more than
one if possible, based on the
knowledge required for the profession. Your textbook should be
the main source for this
information. Any additional sources must be “scholarly”, as
defined later in this
document under Additional Sources.
• In the third section, describe a topic or issue that would likely
present itself during the
developmental period described. The section should begin with
a heading that identifies
the topic. You will explain how your knowledge about the issue
might affect the way you
provide service to the individual as a professional in the career.
Based upon information
https://www.bls.gov/ooh/home.htm
3
learned about the topic and the period of development, describe
at least one thing you
will do to be most effective in working with the individual
9. (client/patient, student, etc.)
because of information learned in this course. Your
understanding of the topic and related
research on the topic should be clearly demonstrated. Your
textbook should be the main
source for this information. Any additional sources must be
“scholarly”, as defined later
in this document under Additional Sources.
• In the fourth section, apply one of the major theories of
development (Piaget, Erickson,
Bronfenbrenner). For late adulthood, you may instead choose to
use Activity Theory,
Socioemotional Selectivity Theory, or Selective Optimization
with Compensation
Theory. For early adulthood, you may choose to extend Piaget’s
theory to include
postformal thought. Again, your textbook should be the main
source for this information.
The section should begin with a heading that identifies the
theory. Explain how
knowledge of the theory would be applied by the professional in
their work with an
10. individual (patient, client, student, etc.) who is in the same
period of development and
who is experiencing the issue/topic previously described. If you
applied one of these
theories in the second section (period of development), you will
apply a different theory
in this section.
Example:
A student might select occupational therapist as a career and
early childhood as the
developmental period. She might select autism as a specific
topic. She could explain how
Bronfenbrenner’s social-ecological theory might be applied to
address a child’s needs in multiple
settings using this theory. Another student might select child
welfare worker as a career and child
maltreatment as a topic. He would select any one of the
developmental periods in which child
maltreatment could be experienced. If Erickson’s theory were
selected as the theory and applied
to the child in middle/late childhood, the student would explain
how his knowledge about the
Industry vs. Inferiority stage could help to inform how he works
11. with the child, the factors he
might pay attention to, or ways he might choose to intervene to
help the child be most successful.
Organization, Structure and Mechanics:
You must generate a clear, specific, and arguable thesis or main
idea. Include evidence and
examples to support the topic idea. Construct a logical pattern
of paragraph development.
Demonstrate consistent use of correct and appropriate spelling,
grammar, and usage. The essay
should be minimum of 1,000 words. The minimum word count
applies only to the main body of
the essay. The required title page and reference page do not
count toward the minimum.
Pay attention to paragraph development. Students often make
the mistake of constructing each of
the four main sections as four very long paragraphs. Each
section should be broken up into
multiple paragraphs. Consider logical points for beginning new
paragraphs, such as subtopics
within a broader topic or when you begin a new idea or point.

APA Format
The essay must be typed, double spaced, with one-inch margins,
using Times New Roman 12
font. References must be cited using APA format. An APA
Guide is included in Moodle. APA
format is not the same as MLA format. If you are accustomed to
using MLA or another format,
you will need to pay attention to the differences. Follow
examples in the APA Guide for the title
page, headings, and reference list. You will not need tables,
figures, or an abstract for this
assignment. You must also use APA format for citations within
13. the body of the essay, in addition
to the reference list at the end . There should be one or more
reference citations in each
paragraph of the essay.

Sources
Main Source
14. Your main source for this assignment will be your textbook and
you are required to use at least
two additional sources (professional association website and
Bureau of Labor Statistics).
Information about other acceptable sources is described below.
First, it will be explained how
you will communicate the information you obtain from sources.
When stating information from the textbook or other sources,
you will always include a
parenthetical citation to identify the source of that information.
When paraphrasing (restating in
your own words) from the textbook, you will include the
following at the end of the sentence:
(Santrock, 2021). When quoting (copying word for word), a
page number is added (i.e. Santrock,
2021, p. 25) and the quoted material must be in “quotation
marks.” Again, quoting should be
used minimally. Most citations should follow paraphrased
content.
Examples:
Quote: “The field of life-span development offers an amazing
15. breadth of careers that can
provide extremely satisfying work . . . By working in the field
of life-span development,
you can help people to improve their lives, understand yourself
and others better,
possibly advance the state of knowledge in the field, and have
an enjoyable time while
you are doing these things” (Santrock, 2021, p. 43)

guidelines/references/examples

_style_introduction.html

5
Following is information paraphrased in two different ways,
based on the same content that is
quoted above. These are preferred instead of the quote.
Paraphrase 1: The study of life-span development is important
for a wide range of
careers and they are especially rewarding careers that make a
difference in people’s lives
16. (Santrock, 2021).
Paraphrase 2: Many careers require knowledge of life-span
development and they can
be very fulfilling because of opportunities to make people’s
lives better (Santrock, 2021).
IMPORTANT: Most of your essay should consist of paraphrased
information, NOT
quoted/copied word-for-word from the source. Quotes may be
used sparingly but should be no
more than 10% of content in the essay and no more than 10% of
content within any of the main
sections. If quotes are used, they must be brief. Lengthy block
quotes should not be necessary for
this assignment. College-level writing requires more than the
ability to construct a series of
quotes. It requires you to think about what you’ve read and be
able to express it intelligently in a
way that captures the essential meaning or main idea, using
different words. These are the skills
of paraphrasing and summarizing. Like any skill, it improves
and gets easier with practice. There
are subtle differences between paraphrasing and summarizing.
17. Both are acceptable for the essay.
For more information, see the separate handout in Moodle, How
to Paraphrase & Summarize.
Second Required Source
In addition to your textbook, you will use at least two additional
sources. The second source
must be a publication from the professional association of the
career you selected (or the
website of that organization). Most professions have a
professional association. Professional
associations help to maintain oversight and quality practice of
the occupation. Most of these
organizations also produce publications about research and best
practices related to the work of
the profession. For psychologists, it is the American
Psychological Association. Physicians have
the American Medical Association. Some may be members of
more than one association. For
example, a pediatrician would be a member of the American
Medical Association and the
American Academy of Pediatrics. A psychiatrist would be a
member of the American Medical
Association and the American Psychiatric Association. A nurse
18. might be a member of the
American Nurses Association and the Society of Pediatric
Nurses. Many occupations will have
both a main professional organization and specialty
organizations. A separate handout lists many
professional associations relevant to the various careers listed
in your textbook as well as some
additional careers often selected by students for this
assignment. See that handout to help
identify the best organizations to research for your own essay.
If you do not see an association
listed for your career, an internet search naming the career and
“professional organization” or
“professional association” should help you identify it. If you
have difficulty, contact the
instructor for assistance.
The website of the professional association will usually provide
some additional description of
the career and often includes the educational requirements. For
example, if you select
psychologist as the career, the American Psychological
Association (APA) is the professional
organization. On the APA website ( https://www.apa.org/) you
19. will see Education & Career
across the top and select it. Scroll down to select Psychology
subfields. Select a subfield and
https://www.apa.org/
6
then scroll down to select “Find out what it takes to become a
______ psychologist.” This will
provide you with considerable information about various
subfields of psychology and the
necessary educational preparation.
Similar to the APA site, the website of the American
Occupational Therapy Association
(https://www.aota.org/) includes a section on Careers. Likewise,
the American Physical Therapy
Association website (https://www.apta.org/) includes a similar
section describing the duties and
educational requirements for a career in physical therapy. You
must find the appropriate
association that applies to the career you select for this
assignment. You may find many other
websites with information about the career but a general
informational website (unaffiliated with
20. the professional association) is not an acceptable substitute.
Make sure it is the official website
for the professional association.
Most professional associations also publish articles on various
issues relevant to the practice of
the career. For an example, see the handout titled AOTA
Mobility. This is a publication from the
American Occupational Therapy Association. It was located by
searching the organization’s
website on the topic of mobility. If a student chose occupational
therapy as a career and mobility
as a topic, this would be an appropriate source and might be
used for a number of different
developmental periods since it separately addresses mobility
issues for infants and children,
adolescents/young adults, and older adults. By exploring the
website of applicable professional
associations, you may find useful information like this one
related to your own topic.
Note: I chose the topic of mobility for this example because it is
not a prominent topic in our
textbook, except for late adulthood. Since I have used it as an
21. example, the AOTA mobility
document may not be used as a source if you choose
occupational therapy. But the AOTA
website has information on many other topics. The same process
would apply, regardless of your
chosen career interest. Some professional associations will have
more information than others.
Third Required Source
In the first main section (after the introductory paragraph), you
will describe the career. In
addition to the textbook and professional association, you must
reference the Bureau of Labor
Statistics (https://www.bls.gov/ooh/home.htm). Enter the career
in the “Search Handbook” box.
After you enter the career in the search box, you should locate a
summary article on the career.

Paper Title
Begin writing the introduction here… The title of the paper is
centered above the first paragraph as a Level 1 heading. Avoid
the title “Introduction,” since the beginning of the paper is
known to be the introduction.
The number of headings needed for a paper depends on the
complexity of the document. Use only the number of headings
necessary to identify distinct sections in your paper. When two
levels are needed, use Levels 1 and 2. If using a level 2
heading, the document should include a level 1 heading and at
least two level 2 headings. When three levels are needed, use
Levels 1, 2, and 3. If including a level 3 heading, the document
should include a level 1 heading, at least two level 2 headings,
and at least two level three headings as subsections of a level 2
section.
Level One Heading Identifying First Topic After the
Introduction
Begin writing the first paragraph here… If the paper requires a
main section after the introduction, use a Level 1 heading. For
example, if the next section after the introduction is a
discussion on the study’s method, the section could be labeled
“Method.”Level Two Heading to Identify Each Subtopic of the
Section
Begin writing the first paragraph here… For subsections of any
Level 1 heading, use Level 2 headings. Headings should not
include numbers or letters.
Level Two Heading to Identify an Additional Subtopic of the
Section
Begin writing the first paragraph of the section here… Use the
same level heading for topics of the equal importance. For
28. example, in a literature review, all major themes would have the
same headings.
Level Three Heading to Identify a Subsection of the Second
Subtopic
Begin writing the first paragraph of the section here… For any
subtopics of level 2, use Level 3 headings. Level Three Heading
to Identify an Additional Subsection of the Second Subtopic
Begin writing the first paragraph of the section here… Level
headings may not be required, but how many headings are
included in the paper depends on the paper’s complexity. Level
One Heading Identifying the Next Major Topic
Begin writing the first paragraph here… If the paper requires
another main section, use a Level 1 heading.
Level Two Heading to Identify Subtopic of the Section
Begin writing the first paragraph here… For subsections of any
Level 1 heading, use Level 2 headings.
Level Two Heading to Identify an Additional Subtopic of the
Section
Begin writing the first paragraph of the section here… Use the
same level heading for topics of the equal importance.
Conclusion
Begin writing the conclusion here… Use the conclusion section
for wrapping up all the main ideas discussed in the paper and
for showing how all the main points relate to the thesis
statement to help support the claim made in the thesis. Avoid
introducing new ideas in the conclusion or beginning with “In
conclusion.”
