The constituencies of colleges and universities are changing, with new populations arriving on campus and schools competing for fewer students. As traditional student demographics change, schools must sustain diverse cultures and adapt. This has a significant impact on campus security. In the past, security officers reacted to risks, but now they are an integral part of proactively creating a safe environment and promoting safety. Security officers now collaborate to promote the school's culture rather than working behind the scenes. Today's security officers receive continual training to handle major issues like drug and alcohol abuse, signs of abuse, cultural diversity, and workplace violence. Their role is to understand and support the campus environment through observation, protection and championing students.
