*For the purpose of this survey, the "institutional safety plan" is defined as any
protocols or procedures you institution has in place to provide for the safety of its
members. This plan includes the institution's response to any active shooter on
campus.

“Other than calmly exit the building, I don’t know if they
had a plan.”
“We have good safety protocols in various areas, but as
an institution, we do not have a uniform understanding
of how to respond to various types of incidents.”

“There should be armed security personnel. They don't have to be cops.”
“I'm ambivalent. I can see the pluses and minuses of both sides of the argument.”
“Depends. I went to a small school in a big city and a big school in a rough, smaller
city. The later I would be okay with if they had guns. The former I was happy that they
did not. I think it depends on the size of the campus population, are the armed
security like police to a large institution.”
“I go to a city school with an open campus so the actual police force is easily
accessible and often driving through campus. So essentially while the campus police
aren’t armed there are armed police in the area and on campus usually.”

The following five questions asked specifically about
active shooter protocols and drills, which Campus Defense
Group believes are becoming increasingly important
components of institutional safety plans.
For the purposes of this survey, the "active shooter
protocol" is part of the institutional safety plan and
specifically concerns the steps a school takes (lockdowns,
communications, security and police procedures, etc.)
once it learns an active shooter may be on campus.

“At the time, there was an alert via text or email we would
receive about any threats on campus but I was unaware of
other procedures once an alert went out.”
“I don't think they had one then.”
“We didn't have much in place back when. Times were simpler.
But we did have campus police which was great.”
