France colonized Cambodia in 1863 at the initiation of Napoleon III, who ruled France at the time. The French protected the Cambodians but took control over most aspects of the country. Colonizing Cambodia provided France with improved trade routes through the Mekong River to China and greater territorial control in Southeast Asia, with few drawbacks. However, the Cambodians lost autonomy and faced restrictions under French rule, despite also receiving protection.
