James Marshall found gold at Sutter's Mill on January 24, 1848, sparking the California Gold Rush. Thousands of people from around the world migrated to California over land and by ship throughout 1849. While most miners were young men, some were middle aged. The "mother lode", a gold-bearing belt 210 miles long, was located in the Sierra Nevada foothills and initially belonged to anyone who discovered it.
