Climate change is happening and is caused by human activity. The scientific consensus is that global temperatures have risen significantly since the industrial revolution and the levels of CO2 in the atmosphere are the highest they have been in at least 650,000 years. If emissions continue unabated, global temperatures could rise by 2-5 degrees Celsius by 2100, causing widespread impacts. Business contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions and will be impacted by physical and regulatory changes resulting from climate change. Many companies are already taking action to reduce their carbon footprints and develop low-carbon technologies and solutions.

HVAC and CLIMATE CHANGE
Climate change is being driven by global warming which is caused mainly by greenhouse gas emissions from human activities. Buildings contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions through their operations and electricity usage for HVAC equipment. As developing countries like India experience rapid growth and construction of new buildings, the emissions from building HVAC systems are projected to rise substantially and comprise a larger share of countries' total emissions over time if no action is taken. More sustainable 'green' building practices that improve energy efficiency can help reduce the environmental impacts of buildings and their HVAC systems.

- Actions to halve expected methane (a potent greenhouse gas) releases into the atmosphere from the upstream oil and gas industry in 2020 provide 18% of the savings.
- Implementing a partial phase-out of fossil fuel consumption subsidies accounts for 12% of the reduction in emissions and supports efficiency efforts.

CARBON TAX VERSUS CAP AND TRADE

India currently has over 120 GW of installed power capacity but generation meets only a portion of demand, resulting in blackouts. Coal dominates India's energy mix currently. To sustain 8% economic growth, India plans to more than double installed capacity to 250 GW by 2015. This will require adding over 135 GW of new capacity in the next ten years, or over 13.5 GW per year. India has a variety of domestic energy sources that could be developed like coal, gas, hydro, nuclear, wind and solar to meet this demand. However, each option faces challenges in terms of resource constraints, environmental impacts, infrastructure requirements and costs that must be addressed for India to achieve energy security in the future.

Climate change poses urgent challenges that require global cooperation and drastic action. The impacts of climate change like extreme weather events are already being felt around the world. However, countries have made little progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions despite decades of climate negotiations. Developed nations need to make deeper cuts in emissions while providing funding and technologies to help developing countries transition to low-carbon economies. Equity is needed to share the remaining carbon budget fairly and ensure the poor can still develop. Major changes are required across energy, transport, land use and forestry to reinvent economic growth sustainably.

India currently has over 120 GW of installed power capacity but generation meets only a portion of demand, resulting in blackouts. Coal dominates India's energy mix currently. To sustain 8% economic growth, India plans to more than double installed capacity to 250 GW by 2015. This will require adding over 135 GW of new capacity in the next ten years, or over 13.5 GW per year. India has a variety of domestic energy sources that could be developed like coal, gas, hydro, nuclear, wind and solar to meet this demand. However, each option faces challenges in terms of resource constraints, environmental impacts, infrastructure requirements and costs that must be addressed for India to achieve energy security in the future.

Climate change poses urgent challenges that require global cooperation and drastic action. The impacts of climate change like extreme weather events are already being felt around the world. However, countries have made little progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions despite decades of climate negotiations. Developed nations need to make deeper cuts in emissions while providing funding and technologies to help developing countries transition to low-carbon economies. Equity is needed to share the remaining carbon budget fairly and ensure the poor can still develop. Major changes are required across energy, transport, land use and forestry to reinvent economic growth sustainably.

Ranks are assigned from 1 to 8, with 1 for highly feasible [low cost and less criticism] and 8 for hardly feasible.
As seen from the presentation, adopting to biofuels is found to be least feasible (rank-8), followed by fuel switching for electricity (rank-7). In contrast, improving transport efficiency is found to be highly feasible (rank-1), followed by efficiency in electricity production (rank-2). Justifications (qualitative and quantitative) are provided for the ranking of each strategy.
In the concluding slides, stakeholder perspectives are provided for automobile industry and industrial/developing nations. The climate wedges concept was developed by Princeton University, Ford and BP to find solutions to greenhouse gas problem (see references).
