Using Salesforce as a Student Information System SISSalesforce.org
Presentation from Salesforce.org Higher Ed Summit 2018 by: Alec Fisher, Director of Academic Systems & Registry.
Education is replete with legacy SIS systems which are typically inflexible and structured in complex/confusing manners. As a school made up of multiple campuses with ever changing programs and course offerings, were concerned about finding an SIS that could meet our changing business requirements. Add to this we had a diminishing number of people who knew exactly how our old SIS functioned, especially with the workarounds and shortcuts that were required to accommodate changes at our school. In replacing our SIS with salesforce, we now have a system that can align with our changing business processes and requirements. This has instantly improved some of our administrative difficulties and most manual processes. It has also given us new insights into some of our practices and ways in which we were misallocating resources. Finally, this has all allowed us to give better real time advising to students and proactively flag issues as they arise. We know we will be growing and changing as a school. We finally are on a system that will make improvements and solve some of our current administrative problems as well as can be flexible enough to accommodate what the future has in store.

Using Placement Tests to Improve SLOs and Retention - Course Technology Compu...Cengage Learning
Using Placement Tests to Improve SLOs and Retention - Course Technology Computing Conference
Presenter: Rachelle Hall & Beth Berry, Glendale Community College
The importance of student retention and improvement of student learning outcomes in an introductory survey of computer systems course cannot be over emphasized. GCC has been struggling with this issue for years and by incorporating SAM technology into our courses, we were able to address our challenges and develop an action plan. The development of new strategies require data collection. Using a program such as SAM allows us to obtain the data we require. This presentation will demonstrate how we use SAM to define what and where our focus needs to be in order to offer a path to success for our students. Our “D-F-W” rate was close to 30% after our curriculum was changed to articulate to the state universities. This curriculum change added many higher-level tasks to the course, and data showed the students who were unable to conquer these tasks were those who received the D, F or W grade. Those struggling either stopped coming to class once it reached this level of difficulty or simply could not keep up with the content. Using the data we were able to develop a placement test in conjunction with SAM which students take the first week of the class. Should a student not achieve a base entry level score, they can be enrolled in a lower-level computer course. These students are monitored throughout the course to measure their success and retention. Once they complete the competencies in the lower-level course, they are able to proceed into the higher-level survey course with the skill set to succeed. The goals of this presentation are to demonstrate how using technology assessment tools, such as SAM, can give you the information to determine where and how changes need to be made to enable student success in your course. For GCC, it was placement tests for our entering computer students to ensure they were taking the courses they needed to succeed. Although many institutions stray from placement tests for entering computer course students, we now embrace them as a tool to aid in student success.

Accreditation reviews include self-evaluations, peer-reviews, committee-reviews, and the development of in-depth strategic plans. How do I become a business major? Although the minimum grade point average to apply to the School of Business is a 2.25, this does not guarantee your admission. In fact since we began the application process in 2006, admitted students have averaged a 3.0 GPA. Of course, GPA is not the only factor considered for admission, but it is a primary factor. The admission committee looks at your grades from all schools you have attended, both transfer and SIUE. This past history is viewed as a strong indicator of your potential to succeed in the challenging courses that make up the upper level business requirements. Other factors considered may include a written essay, work experience, co-curricular activities, leadership experience, etc…There is a process by which students are selected to join the School of Business and major in a business program. We look at this in two distinct steps. The first step is to declare pre-business status. To be eligible for pre-business status, you must complete four specific skills courses from the general education requirements. You must also earn at least a 2.25 SIUE GPA to enter pre-business status. Once you have completed the required skills courses with a grade of C or higher and have earned a 2.25 GPA, you should meet with your advisor to be coded into the pre-business status. Students who are in pre-business status meet with a business advisor for academic planning and information.
Step two of this process is to submit a formal application to the School of Business. This is usually done sometime in the sophomore year and before students reach the point of taking 300-level business courses. Students complete an application and faculty from the School of Business will choose students from the group who have applied by the deadline. Application opportunities occur twice each year, in March and October. Eligibility to apply is based on GPA and the completion of the 9 business prerequisites. Please review the blue sheet which we provided for detailed information. The admission process is competitive and not all students who apply get into the School of Business. We usually receive around 300 applications and approve around 250 students to enter the School of Business. Students do not have to be in pre-business status to apply for admission to the School of Business. These courses provide the skills necessary for success in upper level business courses as well as the foundation for solid communication skills that will carry the student into the workforce. Eng 101 and 102 give students a solid start to college level writing skills, Spc 105 teaches public speaking to prepare students for the many instances when they will have to give presentations during their academic career, and CMIS 108 prepares students to use critical business software like powerpoint, access, excel and word. Econ 111 and 112 provide an overview of macro and micro economics and Acct 200 addresses financial accounting skills, all of which are key foundation elements for many other areas of business. Math skills are highly important for any business major. Math 120 (college algebra) and MS 250 ( business mathematical methods) prepare students for the type of math they will encounter in other business courses. While providing an excellent foundation for your advanced business coursework, these classes also meet university general education requirements. These classes are seen as a good indicators of success in the business program, so your grades in these classes are also used in the competitive admissions process. Make sure you give these courses extra attention.
If you are sitting here today and you are not sure of your major, please know that it is okay to be undecided at this point and it is okay to change your major. 80% of students will change their major at least once and most students will change their major three times over the course of their college career. As we mentioned earlier, most of the pre-business classes will fit well within our general education program and into many other academic programs. We strongly urge you to focus on classes related to your prospective majors early in your college career. Obtain the curriculum sheets for the programs you are considering and take courses which might apply to both programs to afford a little more time for you to make your decision. BUT, be aware that there may also be some critical sequences which must be started in your first year of college. For example, mathematics and economics are critical to begin in your first year if you want to become a business student. Many of the courses in the sophomore year rely on the courses which you take in your first year. The curriculum guide is a good source of information for these sequences. Finally, as you are making your decision about which major to enter, be sure you work closely with your academic advisors and use the services of the Career Development Center to make your decision. Do not wait until your Junior or Senior year to decide your major….
What goals do you need to meet each year to stay on track to graduate in four years with a business degree? As a Freshman, it is important to start your skill-building or pre-business courses as soon as possible. As I said before, many of these pre-business classes fit within our general education program so they also fit within a variety of majors if you should later change your mind. Your advisor has been preparing for your arrival for quite a few weeks and when you get your recommended courses in the next session, you will most likely find that you will be taking Eng 101 or a writing course to prepare you for Eng 101, a math class as determined by your advisor, Macroeconomics, a freshman seminar (stand alone or a linked section) and skills courses such as classes in logic, speech and computers. Please recognize that this is a general list – your advisor will have your specific courses based on your ACT scores, high school course pattern and any dual credit or advanced placement credit.Get involved in at least one campus activity as soon as possible. Research indicates that college students who are involved in their campus community perform better academically and more quickly establish independence and responsible behavior.
