David A. Ellis is a researcher who builds interactive data visualizations to support publications in psychology and other fields. Some of his recent work includes developing dynamic data visualizations using Shiny and predicting smartphone operating systems from personality traits. He maintains a website at www.davidaellis.co.uk where he shares his visualizations and references publications in which he discusses using visualizations in digital contexts and other research methods.

Coming to terms with intelligence in machines

Simone Scardapane - The dark side of deep learning - Codemotion Milan 2017
Everyone has heard at least once of the magical powers of machine learning - who wouldn't want to be able to program a driverless car on its own? How many times, however, have you heard about the "dark sides" of data-driven technology? In this talk, we will show live demos of five aspects of deep learning that any developer should be aware of: (i) algorithmic bias; (ii) adversarial attacks on trained systems; (iii) breaches of privacy; (iv) safety threats; and (v) hidden technical debts. The lesson is: beware of blind reliance on deep learning - unless you are looking for "deep" troubles!

The study adds a new viewpoint to the scaling deep context and presents a concrete starting point of the scaling deep strategy by linking it with the creation of common ground.
International Collaboration Networks in the Emerging (Big) Data Science

School of Computing PhD Research Conference Presentation
This document outlines Frances Ryan's PhD research on how online information contributes to the building, maintenance, and evaluation of personal reputations. The research examines how people assess the reputations of others based on online information as well as how individuals manage their own reputations online, intentionally or not. To study both aspects, the research will involve participants keeping a one-week diary about their online behaviors and then participating in interviews. Preliminary findings from Generation X participants suggest they are more forgiving of others' online behaviors if they know the person offline but have conflicting views on anonymous accounts. The research draws from literature in many fields and will analyze the collected qualitative diary and interview data.

Abstract: The web has its roots in utopian visions of how technology could benefit humankind. Social media systems were part of this vision, using personalisation technologies to adapt the web you see to better suite your interests. But in the last decade we have seen an increasing number of problems, from anti-social behaviour to fake news, and concerns are being raised about the dangers of personal data collection, from mass surveillance to political propaganda. This talk will present the discipline of Web Science which asks how we got the Web we have, and aims to understand the dynamics of human interaction online, so that we can develop software and policies that help rather than harm. I argue that this is needed now more than ever, as future technology promises to be just as disruptive to our culture and society as the Web, and it is only by understanding these interactions, and acknowledging their consequences, that we can build technology that changes the world in ways that we actually want.

“Big data” initiatives that aim to bring together and mine data from multiple databases across government and non-government agencies promise new insights into human service delivery. Specifically they aim to provide information about what services are being used, how, by whom and with what outcome. However, the process of achieving such insights poses both practical problems and ethical dilemmas. In this presentation, drawing from an extensive literature review and research with government and non-government human service organisations focussing on the design and redevelopment of electronic information systems, the most significant problems and dilemmas will be explored. It will be argued that current frameworks for ethical social work and human service practice will need to be expanded to accommodate developments in technology which have made ‘Big data’ projects possible.

Awareness, attitude, access and action required

This document discusses the evolution of the author's research approach over 25+ years from more observational studies done "in the field" to long-term collaborations where "the field" sets the research topics and sometimes conducts the research. It describes moving from collecting primary data to helping advocacy groups and conducting service evaluations. The author emphasizes establishing relationships over time, breaking down hierarchies between research and practice, and ensuring research is actually useful to people in the field.Working with police recorded data
Jessica Phoenix undertook PhD research in collaboration with the local police force, measuring and investigating domestic violent crime. She recently completed a project with the force on missing person cases from 2015, which contained thousands of cases with names, addresses, and personal details. To anonymize the data for analysis outside of police systems while still tracking repeat missing persons, she applied a coding method. It took much longer than expected to remove duplicated, erroneous, and identifying data, ultimately leaving 4746 usable cases. While access to the data and input from both researchers and practitioners was beneficial, coordinating schedules and underestimating data cleaning time created challenges for the research progress.
Navigating NHS Administrative Data
The document describes the process of analyzing NHS administrative data on patient appointments to categorize patients based on their appointment attendance and missed appointments. It involved processing over 800,000 appointments for 73,000 patients to compute attendance rates and classify patients into categories of zero, low, medium, or high missed appointments.
