Learning to use Git and GitHub is the first step towards getting familiar with Open Source and managing projects efficiently. This is the objective of the workshop for the 1st year members who are just beginning their journey to programming. Along with understanding what's what all we can do with Git, it's equally important to understand how to do it well.

In this session you'll experience the magical world of version control, where you can try out massive code changes without worrying that you'll break your entire site, where you can have access to different versions of your code without saving tons of copies with elaborate naming schemes, and where you can collaborate with others without ever again having to utter the phrase, "Okay, I've finished working on styles.css, so you can go ahead and make your changes now."
This will be a play-along crash course on Git, the version control system that Drupal.org developers (and lots of other people) use to share code with one another and save themselves time and misery.
We'll start with fundamental commands, trying them out along the way. By the end of the session you'll have mastered a simple daily workflow that you'll be able to start using immediately. Plus, you'll leave with a cheat sheet and resources for future reference.

Jessica Phoenix undertook PhD research in collaboration with the local police force, measuring and investigating domestic violent crime. She recently completed a project with the force on missing person cases from 2015, which contained thousands of cases with names, addresses, and personal details. To anonymize the data for analysis outside of police systems while still tracking repeat missing persons, she applied a coding method. It took much longer than expected to remove duplicated, erroneous, and identifying data, ultimately leaving 4746 usable cases. While access to the data and input from both researchers and practitioners was beneficial, coordinating schedules and underestimating data cleaning time created challenges for the research progress.
Navigating NHS Administrative Data
The document describes the process of analyzing NHS administrative data on patient appointments to categorize patients based on their appointment attendance and missed appointments. It involved processing over 800,000 appointments for 73,000 patients to compute attendance rates and classify patients into categories of zero, low, medium, or high missed appointments. To create an ORCID ID from the Pure research information system, a user accesses their personal profile in Pure, clicks "Edit Person Profile", then clicks "Create ORCID" under the ORCID section. This automatically populates the ORCID profile with the user's details from Pure. The user must then click "Create" and "Save" for the ORCID ID to be stored in Pure. The user will also receive an email to claim and review their new ORCID profile within 10 days.

This approach has enabled simplified scaling and substantial improvements in game design, reducing player churn through targeted adjustments.

Postgres is the most advanced open-source database in the world and it's supported by a community, not a single company. So how does this work? How does code actually get into Postgres? I recently had a patch submitted and committed and I want to share what I learned in that process. I’ll give you an overview of Postgres versions and how the underlying project codebase functions. I’ll also show you the process for submitting a patch and getting that tested and committed.
