"Connecting Cyberinfrastructure Back To The Laptop"
Science Gateways today are generally built to provide a web-accessible interface for a particular scientific community to access a combination of software, hardware, and data deployed in an expertly managed computing center. But what happens when the scientist wants to repatriate their data? Or perform some analysis that is not supported by the gateway? Both for the purposes of encouraging innovative workflows and serving an audience with a wide range of computational experience it is important to consider how a gateway can fit into the broader computational ecosystem of a particular researcher or research group. One simple starting point for this is to ask the question "how can the gateway connect back to the laptop?". This talk will consider how this is being done today in science gateways and present some ideas for how this could be expanded in the future.

The data warehouse is intended to support analysis by making the right data available to the right people in a timely fashion. But conditions change all the time, and when data doesn’t keep up with the business, analysts quickly turn to workarounds. This leads to ungoverned and largely un-managed side projects, which trade short-term wins for long-term trouble. One way to keep everyone happy is by creating an integrated environment that pulls data from all sources, and is capable of automating both the model development and delivery of analyst-ready data.
Register for this episode of The Briefing Room to hear data warehousing pioneer and Analyst Barry Devlin as he explains the critical components of a successful data warehouse environment, and how traditional approaches must be augmented to keep up with the times. He’ll be briefed by WhereScape CEO Michael Whitehead, who will showcase his company’s data warehousing automation solutions. He’ll discuss how a fast, well-managed and automated infrastructure is the key to empowering faster, smarter, repeatable decision making.

In the Big Data shuffle, everyone is looking at Hadoop as “the answer” to collect interesting data from a new set of sources. While Hadoop has given organizations the power to gather more information assets than ever before, the question still looms: which data, regardless of source, structure, volume and all the rest, are significant for affecting business value – and how do we harness it? One effective approach is to bolster the data warehouse environment with a solution capable of integrating all the data sources, including Hadoop, and automating delivery of key information into the rights hands.
Register for this episode of The Briefing Room to hear veteran Analyst Robin Bloor as he explains how a rapidly changing information landscape impacts data management. He will be briefed by Mark Budzinski of WhereScape, who will tout his company’s data warehouse automation solutions. Budzinski will discuss how automation can be the cornerstone for closing the gap between those responsible for data management and the people driving business decisions.

Workshop with Joe Caserta, President of Caserta Concepts, at Data Summit 2015 in NYC.
Data science, the ability to sift through massive amounts of data to discover hidden patterns and predict future trends and actions, may be considered the "sexiest" job of the 21st century, but it requires an understanding of many elements of data analytics. This workshop introduced basic concepts, such as SQL and NoSQL, MapReduce, Hadoop, data mining, machine learning, and data visualization.

Nov 2014 talk to SW Data Meetup by Mike Olson, co-founder and chairman of Cloudera.
In business, we often deal with hype around trends in society, politics, economy and technology. We know we need to take claims of the next big thing with a grain of salt and that we should be careful not to set expectations too high. However, with Big Data analytics, the opposite is true. The hype that accompanies it actually conceals the enormity of its impact on the way we do business. In this talk I’ll discuss how new 'Data Driven' economies are emerging through relentless innovation across the public and private sectors.
Mike (co-founded Cloudera in 2008 and served as its CEO until 2013 when he took on his current role of chief strategy officer (CSO.) As CSO, Mike is responsible for Cloudera’s product strategy, open source leadership, engineering alignment and direct engagement with customers. Prior to Cloudera Mike was CEO of Sleepycat Software, makers of Berkeley DB, the open source embedded database engine. Mike spent two years at Oracle Corporation as vice president for Embedded Technologies after Oracle’s acquisition of Sleepycat in 2006. Prior to joining Sleepycat, Mike held technical and business positions at database vendors Britton Lee, Illustra Information Technologies and Informix Software. Mike has a Bachelor’s and a Master’s Degree in Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
