This document discusses 3 ways that families can be hurt: selfish ambition, self-importance, and self-centeredness. It provides biblical passages from Philippians, Galatians, and James that warn against these attitudes. Selfish ambition leads to disorder and evil practices. Self-importance is the desire for personal prestige over others. Self-centeredness means being curved inward only on oneself. To build a healthy family, one should look after their own interests but also be interested in and practice self-forgetfulness for the benefit of others.
Based on Respectable Sins by Jerry Bridges, this lesson discusses the end results of anger. Bitterness, resentment, enmity, hostility, and grudges are all addressed.
Following Jesus goes deeper than behaviors it permeates the attitudes. Paul uses this hymn/poem not primarily for its theology, rich though it is, but for its application. We are to adopt the same mind as was reflected in Christ.

Godliness is often one of the hard to define terms for most saints. Ungodliness is described very clearly in the Scripture as being a failure to respect God, lawlessness, and sensuality. Godliness is respects God and results in respectful living. What does godliness mean about how I should live my life?

Here are some possible responses.

Counterfeit or true?
When someone asks you to tell them the truth, what will you do?
Will you tell them the truth as if you were talking to God?
Would you make sure to tell them what they want to hear?
Read this Bible study created by Mark Kelldorf to learn about LOVE.

It’s not the birth of Christ –The only reason we celebrate his birth is His death and resurrection!
It’s not the life he lived on earth, his life would have not been a big deal if he didn’t live to die, and die to live again.
A Dying Man's Last Words: Effectively Spiritually Leading Your PeersOmar Miranda

2. Philippians 2:1-5 (NIV)
1 If you have any encouragement from being united
with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any
fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and
compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being
like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit
and purpose. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or
vain conceit, but in humility consider others better
than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only
to your own interests, but also to the interests of
others.
3. 3 ways family get hurt
• Selfish ambition
• Self-importance
• Self-centeredness
4. Selfish ambition
Galatians 5:18-23 (NIV)
18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under
law. 19 The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual
immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and
witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of
rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and
envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as
I did before, that those who live like this will not
inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the
Spirit is
love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithful
ness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such
things there is no law.
5. James 3:14-16 (NIV)
16 For where you have envy
and selfish ambition, there
you find disorder and every
evil practice.
6. Self-Importance or vain conceit
‘the desire for personal
prestige’ he goes on to write
‘Prestige is for many people
an even greater temptation
than wealth. To be admired
and respected, to have a
platform seat, to have one’s
opinion sought, to be known
by name and appearance,
even to be flattered, are for
many people, most desirable
things.” (William Barclay)
8. 4 Each of you should
look not only to your
own interests, but also
to the interests of
others.
9. Build healthy family!
1. Look after yourself
2. Be interested in
others
3. Practice self-
forgetfulness
10. “You can't stay in your
corner of the forest
waiting for people to
come to you. You have to
go to them sometimes”
(Winnie the Pooh)

Not ambition itself Created to be ambitious and to succeedBut ambition submitted to the will and glory of GodIssue is SELFISH AMBITION – Word also means RIVALRY, COMPETITIVENESS, COMPARISONState of always arguing in a relationship, disagreementMortal enemy – it killsMarriage, in a freindship, in a cell group – it WILL destroy unity and harmonyPaul calls it an act of the sinful nature. Have a look at it’s companions in Gal 5IN YOU – not the other person. Opposite is the fruit of the Spirit.Much easier to live with!
It hurts relationshipsRecently I saw that the number plate VIP1 was to be offered at an auction at Sotheby’s. It was expected to sell for 100 000 pounds (R1.3 million)! Why? Presumably because people like to consider themselves VIP’s ?We all like to see self-important people getting a little deflated. A self-important person was irritated by what he considered incompetent service from a new steward at his club. He abruptly addressed the steward, “Do you know who I am?” The steward replied, “No sir, but I will make enquires and then come back and let you know.”
Concerned only with ourselves and own interestsHeart of the human problem

Priority to be interested in others. Be rid of the stuffInvest into our marriages and families and de-niggle the atmosphere. It seems to me that it starts with usCells and Church family – take time to connect with people in your cell. Don’t have to be BFF. Give time to help. People around you in the service. Today over coffee. Heaven is highly relational. Huge value. Create this overwhelmingly warm environment. Bring kingdom of God to earth – greatest way – interested in others in a world that does not often! Work, Neighbourhood, 3rd spaces. Connect. Then look for ways to point people to faithConclusionConnect Thursday : Hope you will use it to be interested in others and be part of bringing heaven to earth.
