Love does

•Having provided two
positive attributes of
love, Paul now moves
to a list of eight
negative behaviors
that love does not
manifest
Love does not
1.not envy (or jealous)
2.not boastful (or proud)
3.not arrogant (or puffed up)
4.not rude (offending manners)
5.not insist on its own way
(seeks not its own)
6.not irritable (not easily
peeved)
7.not resentful (not keep an
account of wrongs)
8.not rejoice at wrongdoing (not
boast of licentious freedom)
Envy defined
• Envy - to have intense negative feelings over
another’s achievements or success,” or “be filled with
jealousy, envy.”
• Envy - a feeling of discontented or resentful longing
aroused by someone else's possessions, qualities, or
luck.
• Envy - is a feeling of grudging admiration for
another's talent, integrity, personality, looks, money
or happiness.
The Corinthians & Envy
• 1 Corinthians 3:1-11 …turn with me please.
• The Corinthian congregation was being eaten away by the
destructive power of envy or jealousy.
• “envy and quarreling” among them showed that they were
still “worldly,” still “acting like mere human beings and not
a peculiar people, a blood bought people, a Spirit filled
people, a sanctified people.”

What causes envy
1. Dissatisfaction - focusing on what one does not have
rather than what he has.—Colossians 3:1-3
2. Constantly comparing yourself to others rather than
God.—Luke 18:9-14
3. Pride - the false narrative that I deserve a life full of gain
and satisfaction. — Luke 15:11f
4. Lack of self worth & low self-esteem 1 Samuel 16:7
How to overcome Envy
• Psalm 37:1-15
• Proverbs 23:17— Do not
let your heart envy
sinners, but live in the fear
of the Lord always
• Proverbs 14:30 — A
sound heart is the life of
the flesh: but envy makes
the bones rot (kjv.
rottenness of the bones)
Unchecked Envy can lead to
death!
