Brown Television (BTV) is the student-run television station at Brown University. It provides equipment and experience in film production, management, marketing, and web streaming. BTV has three divisions - Station, Programming, and Production. The Station division oversees finances, PR, and web affairs to support the other divisions. Programming designs and operates the 24/7 live streaming channel. Production facilitates equipment access and training for events, documentaries, and studio productions. BTV is managed by an 8-person Executive Board led by the BTV President.

Brown University Student Television (BTV) is the entirely student run, exclusive resource on campus for unrestricted access to
film production equipment for your artistic needs and the only 24/7, On Demand, and live web streaming service. Internally,
we offer pre-professional experience in small non-profit management and marketing, and are the only venue for pre-

2. The Executive Board:
The Executive Board is a team of 8 individuals that through their individual leadership come together and collectively drive the vision of BTV
forward. It is imperative that they possess refined leadership qualities, such as self-stewardship, the ability to delegate responsibility, assuming final
responsibility, rethinking concepts and offering innovative ideas, and working collaboratively. The Executive Board consists of the following:
President of BTV, President of BTVprogramming, President of BTVproduction, Technical Director, Vice President of Finance, Vice President of
Publicity and Marketing, Vice President of Web Affairs. It also includes one non-voting member: Secretary. Anyone may apply to an Executive
Board position. The President of BTV chairs the Executive Board, and any member of the executive board may run for Vice Chair, with exception to
the Secretary. All members of the Executive Board must commit at least 2 hours of office time to BTV per week.
1. Station: THE STATION DIVISION IS EQUIVALENT TO THE HEARTBEAT OF BTV; IT MAKES SURE THAT PRODUCTION AND PROGRAMMING HAVE THE
FINANCIAL AND SOCIAL RESOURCES THEY NEED TO OPERATE TO DESIRED CAPACITY, SO THAT THE OTHER DIVISIONS CAN FOCUS ON ARTISTIC
FACILITATION.
President of BTV- Station Manager
Complete oversight of the station division and BTV as a whole. First in command. Chairs the Executive Board; Leads staff meetings, serves as
primary BTV representative, sets and evaluates success of weekly and monthly goals, and co-signs all on financial decisions. Directly oversees
advancement of all of BTV.
Responsibilities include but not limited to…
• Form and lead a cohesive and collaborative executive board with a unified mission
• Sign off on financial transactions, form partnerships, sit on various boards, act as primary BTV representative, maintain relations
with University, speak at events, center of organizational knowledge, familiar with BTV history, write and help present budgets,
foster a friendly, comfortable environment, have clear vision and aggressive, results-driven approach.
Secretary- Acts as overall aid to the BTV President and Executive Board. Keeps records, manages forms and informational documents makes
them publicly available. High responsibility and good exposure to larger BTV operations. Non-voting.
Historian- Keeps records of BTV milestones, ensures institutional memory, takes pictures.

3. Vice President of Public Relations and Marketing: Oversees, maintains, and drives forward the PR and Marketing department.
*Publicity Chair position taken for 2008-2009. Work your way up to Chair for BTV by being part of the Publicity Team.
Public Relations and Marketing Department
Publicity and marketing has three main initiatives—to get people to (1) staff BTV, (2) watch BTV, (3) make things for BTV, which
corresponds neatly with the three division setup. Every year, the VP of PR & Marketing decides how he/she will organize his/her
department. Generally speaking, it is suggested that the following initiatives/positions be made available to adequately accommodate an
aggressive campaign for BTV:
Graphic Designers- design digital and physical BTV promotions and advertising; collectively promote BTV aesthetic
Merchandising and Sales- research and execute the purchase of BTV apparel, pens, coffee mugs, etc for sales.
BTV Street Team- postering, tableslipping, publicity stunts, radical publicity
Event Coordinator- Coordinates staff and public parties, speakers, workshops, award ceremonies, and the like.
Media Relations Coordinator- Keep close ties with campus radio and news press.
Social Media Coordinator- maintain and develop Facebook fan page, Twitter, blog, and other emerging social media.
Internal Video Coordinator- Coordinates and creates promotional BTV videos to air on channel and across the web.
Alumnae Relations- Maintains positive relations with alumnae and notifies them of major BTV steps forward.
Note: BTV members may certainly have more than one position within their department, division, or in all of BTV. Please remember not to
take on too much and bring down the overall quality of your contributions.
Vice President of Finance: oversees the finance department and drives it forward; smartly manages the BTV budget; presents several
financial options to the executive board concerning various projects or initiatives; primary financial representative of BTV; collaborates
closely with the BTV President; carefully and skillfully crafts a budget to present to the UFB with the Executive Board; collects budgets of
divisions and departments and calls for second drafts.

4. Finance Team:
The Finance department has two main goals: make money and make sure the money we have is being spent as wisely as possible. Achieving
these two goals will allow us to maximize the artistic resources we can offer student that are trying to produce shows, films, and trying to get
them widespread exposure. While the Finance Department structure is at the whim of the VP of Finance, the following positions/initiatives
can be expected to be facilitated every year.
Assistant VP of Finance- Management of late fees, tape costs, and general support in tasks of VP of Finance.
Director of Fundraising- Oversees, manages, and coordinates major fundraising efforts.
Grant Research and Writing- Researches grants BTV can qualify for and applies for them.
Corporate Donations and Partnerships- Contacts corporations like Apple or Sony to work out educational partnerships.
Departmental Petitioning and Organizational Cosponsorship- this is straightforward.
Vice President of Web Affairs and the Web Department- The VP of Web Affairs oversees, maintains and develops all things web and
is the webmaster. The website will be the primary venue through which BTV programming is watched. Our domain host is Bluehost and we
run Wordpress. A thorough knowledge of Flash, Java, CSS, php, html, and website design is desired. Interaction with most departments
involved. It will be very common for the VP of web affairs to serve many of the functions below:
Webmaster- updates informational content, brainstorms new features, translates technical information.
Web Designer- discusses aesthetic with the Executive Board and creates the identity for BTV. Not all designs will be accepted. Web design is a
constant work in progress. *This position is taken for the Fall 09 Semester

THE PROGRAMMING SECTOR CONCEPTUALIZES, OPERATES, AND DEVELOPS THE BTV CHANNEL AT WWW.BROWNTV.ORG. THEY RELEASE
SCHEDULES, MANUALLY CONTROL THE BROADCAST, AND DECIDE WHAT AIRS WHEN AND WHERE, CREATING THEMES AND A LOGIC TO
PROGRAMMING.
President of BTV Programming/Programming Director- the programming director oversees the day to day running of the BTV
channel. He/she and his/her staff establish and run the 24/7 Livestream station at www.browntv.org. Within the whole of BTV, the
Programming Director is second in command. The Programming Director is designed to be for a person who can “wear many hats.”

• Hold weekly divisional meetings
• Attend weekly E-Board meetings
• Set goals as a team leader and evaluate success
• Ensure professional happiness of all Programming staff
Programming Division- consists of the following departments
Program- led by the programming director, this is a team of people who decide the daily, weekly and monthly schedule of BTV, as informed
by audience research and results. They conduct polls and intelligently program shows. They create, distribute, and evaluate the BTV
schedule.
Control Room Operations- This team of people is led by the Chief Control Room Operator, which anyone may apply for, and they operate the
web streaming platform Livestream Premium. Different CRO’s will physically manage the broadcast in the BTV studio during primetime
hours with live graphics, teaser updates, and promotions.
Content Expansion- Contacts organizations within and outside the university to obtain new and interesting programming, upkeep of the BTV
Programming database.
Web Video Content Coordinator- Ensures that all appropriate content reaches On-Demand status on the website through Vimeo in an organized
and user friendly manner. Manages Video Submission project and works with Brown YouTube.

6. 3. Production: THE PRODUCTION SECTOR FACILITATES THE PRODUCTION RESOURCE DEMAND OF THE UNIVERSITY AND ACTS AS AN ADVOCACY
AND COORDINATION GROUP FOR EDUCATIONAL PRODUCTION RESOURCES. PRODUCTIONS ARE AIRED ON BROWNTV.ORG BY THE PROGRAMMING
DIVISION.
a. Production Management
President of BTVproduction/Executive Producer- third in command. The Executive Producer is responsible for
maintaining and developing the Production division as a whole. He/she holds weekly divisional meetings to discuss progress of
productions and brainstorm and implement new resources. His/her primary responsibility is to lead the production managers and
producers in such a way to ensure the satisfaction of students using BTV resources and clients receiving BTV’s services. He/she is
the primary social and political advocate for the creation of new productions. *This position is taken for 2009-2010
Responsibilities include but not limited to…
• Recruitment and training
• Primary Advocate of new production for BTV, formalizes campaigns with PR&Mktng
• Writes emails and notices to the divisional listserv with updates and keeps shows in the know with BTV development.
• Cultivate quality performance of production managers through coordinating training and info
• Work collaboratively with production managers to set goals, evaluate performance, and improve.
• Write divisional budgets and supplements
Production Departments
All production departments have a production manager, who manages producers. Anyone in BTV can be a producer, which is just a
BTV representative in charge of taking a production project from start to finish. You can be a producer of as many production
projects as you wish. Producers must attend departmental and divisional meetings. On the application, note an interest to be a
producer if you are interested. We often have more producers than we are able to accommodate, so we encourage applying for
another BTV office or department to help get more productions made through BTV, so that you have more possible projects for
which to be a producer.

7. 1. Series Production
Series Production Manager ensures the maintenance and development of all BTV series. He/she keeps records of
active projects and their status, manages contracts and legal information, evaluates technical needs, helps operate
the checkout calendar, forms friendships with shows, and offers professional support. Reviews, advises, and
approves new shows. He/she must meet a quota of new productions, write department budgets, host at least one
educational speaker/session, keep in close contact with his/her producers, and represent series needs in divisional
meetings.
2. Studio Production
Studio Production Manager ensures the maintenance and development of all BTV studio shows. He/she keeps
records of active projects and their status, manages contracts and legal information, helps operate checkout
calendar, evaluates technical needs, forms friendships with shows, and offers professional support. He/she must
meet a quota of new productions, write department budgets, host at least one educational speaker/session, keep in
close contact with his/her producers, and represent studio needs in divisional meetings.
3. Event Production
Event Production Manager manages the videography service of BTV. BTV charges a varying fee for videography
services to the university and student organizations depending on several factors. Videography usually ranges from
$100-$400. The Event PM forms a list of campus videographers to hire out as requests come in and negotiates
prices with clients. If videographers use BTV equipment, BTV receives a certain percentage of the profits. Contract
supervision is of the utmost importance here. This is essentially starting a small business, and the Event PM will set
up a streamlined videography production system and write budgets for necessary equipment.
This is a developing program. The individual must be organized, responsible, and trustworthy. He/she keeps
records of active projects and their status, evaluates technical needs, actively promotes the services to student
organizations, and offers professional support. He/she must meet a quota of events recorded, host at least one

8. educational speaker/session, keep in close contact with videographers, and represent event production needs in
divisional meetings.
4. Doc-Narrative Production
Doc-Narrative Production Manager ensures the maintenance and development of all BTV documentaries, narratives
and unclassifiable productions. He/she keeps records of active projects and their status, manages contracts and legal
information, evaluates technical needs, helps operate the checkout calendar, forms friendships with projects, and
offers professional support. Reviews, advises, and approves new projects. He/she must meet a quota of new
productions, write department budgets, host at least one educational speaker/session, keep in close contact with
his/her producers, and represent series needs in divisional meetings. This PM position is considerably less
demanding given the low amount of doc-narrative requests BTV currently takes in. To compensate, we have a Film-
A-Month Club idea that we’d like explored and manifested.
5. Ad Production
Advertisement Production Manager: This is one of the most important positions in BTV, and requires even more
responsibility than the Event Production Manager. TV stations run off of ads. Video advertisement is the most
effective form of advertising. This individual will manage a team of producers that will create 15 second to one
minute video ads for student organizations, individuals, the university, and local businesses. Pricing will depend on
the scope of the project and the organization requesting BTV’s services. The Ad PM will also use the graphic
designers to create promotional powerpoint slides and flyers for interested organizations to air on browntv.org.
Must be an organized, aggressive leader—financially responsible, a systematic thinker, and willing to create
something big and very influential.

9. Technical Director- Fourth in command. Oversees and directs effective use of all things having to do with BTV equipment. Must
gain a thorough knowledge of how to operate BTV’s equipment. Sets up checkout system ensures security and quality care of
equipment. Oversees checkout calendar, manages locks and codes. The Technical Director and his team will hold instructive classes
and handle the rental schedule. *This position is taken for 2009-2010
Specific Responsibilities:
• Gain a thorough knowledge of BTV’s equipment.
• Build a technical team of individuals who hold a wealth of knowledge in BTV equipment to act as resources to filmmakers.
Many will specialize in a certain area.
• Create and operate a rental scheduling calendar making it easy and secure for students to rent out BTVs equipment.
• Design and lead classes with the technical team for BTV Equipment Training.
• Create a technical resource packet to give to producers and filmmakers involving specific uses and features of BTV
Equipment to put in the BTV Production Packet.
• Evaluate the status of equipment and work with the Finances Department to build a budget each term determining what
equipment BTV should purchase.
• Make sure the equipment is kept safe and clean.
Technical Team- Assists the Technical Director with all, but not limited to, the above duties. Must gain a thorough
knowledge of BTV equipment and checkout system. ALL members of the technical team will be expected to participate in rental
hours and teach equipment tutorials.
Equipment Production- Assists the Technical department in the construction of DIY material. This is essentially our guerilla
department, in charge of making dollies, cranes, tripods, lighting equipment, what have you, out of cheap, easy to attain
materials. They will also make desks, chairs, props, and other objects as needed by BTV productions. Will propose budget and
plans and execute it themselves.
