A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

5. Jamais Vu
“A lacking gamer,
you're right, you can't
control me.I keep
hurting cause of my
repeated mistakes and
50 thousand other
things.” - Jamais Vu
“The song is about
how there might be
unintentional
mistakes and setbacks
but we will keep
getting up and keep on
running” - Kim
Namjoon
Uses metaphors to compare situations in life to a game. Let's say you’re playing
a game and fail a level, you continue to play until you pass that level. The same
should be done in life, we may fail, but what's important is that we continue to
put in effort to keep those mistakes from happening again.
6. Trivia : Just Dance - Trivia : Love - Trivia : Seesaw
All three songs are
included in the Love
Yourself : Answer
album. The three
songs (in order) tell
a story. A story
about the
beginning, the
middle, and the end
of a relationship.
Just dance : is a song about
meeting someone and falling in
love with them through dancing,
Dancing together is a metaphor
for infatuation and love.
Love: since love is such a broad
term, Trivia: Love explores what
is love and whether the feeling
of the relationship was love or
not.
Seesaw : compares a rocky and
unstable relationship to a
seesaw. Eventually one must get
off, signifying the end of the
relationship.
7. Whalien 52
In 1989 scientists found a
whale that sang at 52 Hz.
Most whales sing at 10 to
40 Hz meaning that no one
heard the whale as it sung.
The whale continued to
sing across the ocean but
no one called back. This
whale was described as the
the ‘loneliest whale in the
world’
The 52 Hz whale is used
as a metaphor to describe
the feeling of the youth
being alienated due to the
fact that they are young.
It also shows us how
adolescents feel when
they’re put down by older
generations because
they're “too young” and
“don’t know any better”
“In the middle of the vast ocean, one whale speaks softly and lonelily. The fact
that no matter how much they shout, it won’t reach
8. No More Dream & N.O
No More Dream : is a song
about following our dreams.
We’re in a society where we
are told to follow our dreams
yet at the same time are
encouraged to “become
doctors and lawyers”. Not
wanting to disappoint those
around you, the youth often
are left with no more dreams
(stop dreaming) to follow the
expectations of society.
N.O : is about being in a society that
wants us to focus on education and
education only.. With the song N.O
BTS emphasize why this mindset is a
problem .
“It’s a cycle of school, home or an
internet cafe. Everyone lives the same
life. Students who are pressured to be
number one or dropping out”
“There’s no conversation topics beside
studying. Outside, there are so many
kids like me, living the life of a puppet.
9. “And in an intro to one of our early
albums, there’s a line that says,
“My heart stopped when I was
maybe nine or ten.” Looking back I
think that’s when I begin to worry
about what other people thought of
me and started seeing myself
through their eyes. I stopped
looking up at the night skies, the
stars. I stopped daydreaming.
Instead, I just tried to jam myself
into the molds that other people
made. Soon, I began to shut out my
own voice and started to listen to
the voices of others. No one called
out my name and neither did I. My
heart stopped and my eyes closed
shut. So, like this, I, we, all lost our
names”
BTS at the United Nations - Speech by Kim
Namjoon of BTS
10. “I’d like to ask all of you
what is your name? What
excites you and makes
your heart beat? Tell me
your story. I want to hear
your voice and I want to
hear your conviction. No
matter who you are, where
you’re from, your skin
color, your gender identity
just speak yourself. Find
your name and find your
voice by speaking
yourself.”
BTS at the United Nations - Speech by Kim
Namjoon of BTS
12. “If any of you feel lost
in the face of doubt or
uncertainty or the
pressure of starting
something new, don’t
rush. Take a deep
breath. You may find
that any moment can
be turned into an
opportunity. Allow
yourself to take it easy
one step at a time.”
Take it easy “One step at a time”
“If there is anyone out
there who cannot see
where they should go
from here forth,I urge
you to listen to your
heart. Things may
feel a little difficult
right now, but
somewhere out there,
luck and opportunity
is waiting for you.”
I urge you to “listen to your heart.”
13. Masculinity is an “Outdated Concept”
On an interview with Rolling Stone, Namjoon
stated that “The labels of what being masculine is,
and outdated concept. It is not our intention to
break it down,” “But if we are making a positive
impact, we are very thankful.” he then added, “We
live in an age where we shouldn’t have those labels
or have those restrictions.”
Mental health should be discussed and expressed
On an interview with Rolling Stone the
topic of mental health came up, yoongi
expressed that, “I think, for anybody,
these emotions are not something that
need to be hidden. They need to be
discussed and expressed,”
14. “I want you to smile. Not one of
those smiles that you put on your
face to move on, but a real smile
from pure happiness in your
heart,”
I want you to smile “with pure happiness”
“Don’t ever make decisions based
on fear. Make decisions based on
hope and possibility.”
Hope and possibility
“We should try to respect and
understand each other. We need to be
considerate of others. Only then we
can understand each other and get
close to each other and become one.”
We need to “respect and understand”
