We’ve all heard management “nuggets” such as “make people come to you with solutions, nut just problems,” or “training time is wasted time,” or my favorite, “work smarter.” But how are you supposed to do that, especially if you may not have received any management training, or if your gut is telling you what you’re doing might not be working? Johanna Rothman explains that much of what you have heard about management is myth—based not on evidence, but on ideas dating from the Industrial Revolution. However, many myths have a germ of truth. Why Drupal seems un-cool
As technologists, we are always looking out for the “next big thing” partially because of perceived advancements, but often simply because it is different/new/exciting. While each major version release of Drupal has seen extensive advancements, it’s still PHP at its core. Theres a fairly large momentum around the MEAN stack, frameworks like Django or even languages like Go. While not necessarily “new,” in many ways, we find them to be different and exciting because of the additional challenges posed by uncertain big performance and scalability issues - keeping their interests piqued.
Opportunities
We have all made a large investment in Drupal, whether financial or personal time over the years. Continuing to ensure that our platform stays cool in the eyes of our development teams and colleagues can be done in a number of ways from evangelizing all the dev tools to embracing “Headless Drupal” initiatives. I will outline my ideas, many currently in practice at NorthPoint Digital, during the session.

Software Security Goes Mobile
Erik Costlow says that, as more and more business is transacted on mobile platforms, securing the applications and data that run on them is a business imperative. However, hackers have taken advantage of a knowledge gap to develop creative attacks against mobile applications. Becoming more common is “intent spoofing” in which hackers write a special application that targets an existing app on the Android platform and directs it to take malicious actions. Erik guides you through the steps you can take—use of two-factor authentication, code analysis, and obfuscation—to protect your intellectual property and your customers’ data against these and other potential threats.
Structural Testing: When Quality Really Matters
Jamie Mitchell explores an underused and often forgotten test technique—white-box testing. Also known as structural testing, this technique requires some programming expertise and access to the code. Using only black-box testing, you could easily ship a system having tested only 50 percent or less of the code base. Are you comfortable with that? For mission-critical systems, such low test code coverage is clearly insufficient. Although you might believe that the developers have performed sufficient unit and integration testing, how do you know that they have achieved the level of coverage that your project requires? Jamie describes the levels of code coverage that the business and your customers may need—from statement coverage to modified condition/decision coverage. He explains when you should strive to achieve different code coverage target levels and leads you through examples of pseudocode. Trends in Big Data Testing
The Big Data has three unique characteristics—Volume, Velocity, and Variety. Today’s big data applications are growing dramatically. We must process data ever more quickly so we can respond to events as they happen, and that data is arriving from an ever wider array of channels, sensors, and formats. Stefano Rizzo explains that the main challenges of testing big data by little agile teams, beside the apparent contradiction, are related to testing individual components vs. testing the big product, traceability, and organizing massive amounts of test data vs. minimal testing with spreadsheets, and testing the final products of development vs. test-driven development. After reviewing these challenges, Stefano shares practices and tools to address both testing Big Data and managing the Testing of Big Data—the huge amount of data coming from massive and continuous testing practices.
Program Management: Collaborating across the Organization
To be most effective when managing a large program, the component projects should limit their batch size, create networks of people, and report status in a way that works for the entire program. For those of you who are not quite ready for agile, Johanna Rothman explains how to use staged delivery, release trains, or RUP as lean(er) alternatives to waterfall and agile. Johanna explains how to encourage project teams to create communities of practice using their social networks—start with the existing rumor mill and build on it more formally. If you have managed programs in the past, you know you can never believe the Gantt chart, but we persist in using them. Instead, consider a product backlog burnup chart or a cumulative flow diagram. Join Johanna to discover how to use alternative measures of the program status including storyboards and alternative metrics to monitor your program's state.

Congruent Coaching: An Exploration
The document summarizes a half-day tutorial on coaching presented by Johanna Rothman. The tutorial covered key topics such as the differences between coaching, feedback, mentoring and teaching. It provided recipes and checklists for effective coaching, including generating options, evaluating consequences, setting SMART goals and action plans. The tutorial included speed coaching exercises where participants practiced different coaching roles. It explored effective and ineffective coaching stances and how to avoid "inflicting help".
Agile.managers.essence.leadership
My keynote at AgileIndyConf was about Agile Management: what agile managers do in an agile organization. The reality is this: they perform the leadership work that managers do in any great organization.
Managers don't do tactical work. Oh, they might need to do some problem-solving, *if* the team asks for their help. But what managers need to do is create an environment in which people can perform great work. That's what this talk is all about.

She discussed organizing agile programs using small world networks of cross-functional feature teams rather than hierarchies. Programs should have short iterations and deliver working software frequently. Feature teams are autonomous but collaborate through communities, roadmaps and demos. Facilitation helps as programs scale.

We have opportunities to coach people all the time. Much of what we see as coaching is actually undercover training. Real coaching is richer—offering support while explaining options. In this interactive session, Johanna Rothman invites you to explore how to coach, regardless of your position in the organization. Teaching is just one option for coaching. You have many other options, depending on your coaching stance. You may select a counselor’s stance if you are managing up or a partner’s stance if you are a peer. You might even select a reflective observer’s stance or a technical advisor’s stance, depending on the situation. We will explore what to do when you see opportunities for coaching but you haven’t been asked to coach. To be most effective when managing a large program, the component projects should limit their batch size, create networks of people, and report status in a way that works for the entire program. The Fourth Constraint in Project Delivery—Leadership
All too often, the triple constraints—time, cost, and quality—are bandied about as if they are the be-all, end-all. While they are important, leadership—the fourth and larger underpinning constraint—influences the first three. Statistics on project success and failure abound, and these measurements are usually taken against the triple constraints. According to the Project Management Institute, only 53 percent of projects are completed within budget, and only 49 percent are completed on time. If so many projects overrun budget and are late, we can’t really say, “Good, fast, or cheap—pick two.” Rob Burkett talks about leadership at every level of a team. He shares his insights and stories gleaned from his years of IT and project management experience. Rob speaks to some of the glaring difficulties in the workplace in general and some specifically related to IT delivery and project management. Resolve the Contradiction of Specialists within Agile Teams
As teams grow, organizations often draw a distinction between feature teams, which deliver the visible business value to the user, and component teams, which manage shared work. Steve Berczuk says that this distinction can help organizations be more productive and scale effectively, but he recognizes that not all shared work fits into this model. Some work is best handled by “specialists,” that is people with unique skills. Although teams composed entirely of T-shaped people is ideal, certain skills are hard to come by and are used irregularly across an organization. Since these specialists often need to work closely with teams, rather than working from their own backlog, they don’t fit into the component team model. The use of shared resources presents challenges to the agile planning model. Steve Berczuk shares how teams such as those providing infrastructure services and specialists can fit into a feature+component team model, and how variations such as embedding specialists in a scrum team can both present process challenges and add significant value to both the team and the larger organization.

A holarchy is a network that has no top or bottom and where each person’s value derives from his ability, rather than position. The Agile Performance Holarchy (APH) is an empirical model for scaling and sustaining agility while continuing to deliver great products. Jeff Dalton designed the APH by drawing from lessons learned observing and assessing hundreds of agile companies and teams. The APH helps implement a holarchy—a system composed of interacting organizational units called holons—centered on a series of performance circles that embody the behaviors of high performing agile organizations. Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

The presentation culminates in a live demonstration. We'll showcase the manipulation of Galileo's Open Service pilot signal, simulating an attack on various software and hardware systems. This practical demonstration serves to highlight the potential consequences of unaddressed vulnerabilities, emphasizing the importance of offensive security practices in safeguarding critical infrastructure.

How information systems are built or acquired puts information, which is what they should be about, in a secondary place. Our language adapted accordingly, and we no longer talk about information systems but applications. Applications evolved in a way to break data into diverse fragments, tightly coupled with applications and expensive to integrate. The result is technical debt, which is re-paid by taking even bigger "loans", resulting in an ever-increasing technical debt. Software engineering and procurement practices work in sync with market forces to maintain this trend. This talk demonstrates how natural this situation is. The question is: can something be done to reverse the trend?
