Daylight Factor Analysis
The innovationcenterspace islocatedatfirstfloor,facingthe eastside,welcomingthe morningsun
inthiszone, bothnatural lightandartificial lightare requiredtoprovide acomfortable andhealthy
learningareaforthe communitytocapture betterideaandmaximise innovative learningprogress.
Basedon MS1525, the daylightingfactordistributionsare statedason the table below:
ZONE DAYLIGHTING FACTOR(%) DISTRIBUTION
Verybright >6 Too brightwiththermal and
glare problems
Bright 3-6 Good
Average 1-3 Fair
Dark 0-1 Poor
DaylightFactorCalculation
Areaof the windowexposed(m2) 7.25 x 3.0= 21.75m2
Total areaof internal surface (m2) [(7.3x 3.45) + (7.3x3.45) + (7.25x3.45) +
(7.25x3.45)+(7.25x7.3)+(7.25x7.3)]=206.25
Double glazingglasstransmittance corrected
for dirt
0.6
Visibleskyangle 66
Average reflectanceof area 0.5
Average DF (21.75/206.25) x [(0.6x66)/(1-0.5)]=8.31%
Natural IlluminationCalculation
Illuminance (lux) Example
120 000 Verybrightsunlight
110 000 Brightsunlight
20 000 Clearsky
1000-2000 Overcastsky
400 Sunrise/sunset
<200 Midday
40 Fullyovercast
<1 Sunset,Storm
External=20 000 lux (clearsky)
DF = E_internal /E_external x 100%
8.31 = (Ei / 20 000) x 100%
= 1662 lux
Conclusion
The innovationcenterareahasa daylightfactorof 8.31% andnatural illuminationof 1662 lux.Based
on MS 1525 requirements,bothvaluesare well abovesuggestedratings.Thus,highintensityof sun
especiallyduringthe late morningscouldbe veryuncomfortable forpeopleseatingaround the area
closesttothe façade as itcouldbe veryglaringandhot. To tackle thisproblem, operable horizontal
sunbreakersare placedonthe frontfaçade to control the amountof sunlightenteringthe spaces
hence able toprovide thermal andilluminance comfort.
1.2 Artificial Lighting Proposal
Basedon MS 1525, the requiredlux level fora workshopora similarlyfunctioningspace is400 lux.
ProposedLuminaire
Fittinglayout
Accordingto the calculationandlightcontouranalysis,these luminairesare arrangedregularlyin6
rows,each having6 luminaires,while havingtotal luminairesof 36(minimumrequired=32).
1.3 PSALI Scheme
These luminairesare controlledunderthree poleswitch. The uppestrow are setupfor all day usage
due to insufficientandfadedlightdiffusion.Whereassecondandthirdrow are to be switchedon
basedon skycondition.Normallywhenthe skystartstoturn dark,theyare switchedoninorderto
provide constantandsufficientluminance tospace, atthe same time reduce energyconsumptionin
a longrun.
2.0 Lightingcalculation for newspaper/magazine readingarea

and artificial lightare requiredtoprovide sufficientlightdue todeepstretchinsidewhichmake the

PSALIScheme
Artificial lightcontour
Combination of artificial light contour and natural light contour
Basedon the calculation&lightcontour analysis,the luminairesare controlledbytwoswitch:Two
pole switchandsingle pole switch. The single poleswitchiscontrollingthe lightsinthe zone where it
isnearerto the windowwhere natural lightingare more sufficient, sothe thirdrow can be shutoff
whennatural lightispresent.Thishelptoallow bettertransitionandcontrol of luminairesand
reduce overall energyconsumptioninalongrun.
