The Bachelor of Science in Social Work (BSSW) is a four-year program at Pangasinan State University Lingayen Campus that provides students with knowledge and skills in social work practice, social welfare policies, and human welfare. It teaches students important skills like assessment, interviewing, case management, and advocacy to help individuals with disabilities, mental illnesses, criminal backgrounds, and addictions. The BS in Social Work program aims to educate students on understanding society's problems and empowering people to improve their living conditions.

1. Bachelor of Science in Social Work (BSSW) is a four-year degree program in Pangasinan State University Lingayen Campus
that is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills in social work practice, social welfare policies and human
welfare. It helps students understand the different units of society, such as families and communities, the problems and issues
that surround them and the possible solutions that can empower and improve their way of living. The BS in Social Work program
teaches students important skills in assessment, interviewing, service planning, case management, crisis intervention, problem
solving, program evaluation, community outreach, community organizing, advocacy, research and networking. It also aims to
educate students on how to deal with different groups or individuals, including people who have disabilities, mental illnesses,
criminal backgrounds and addictions.
WHAT IS BS SOCIAL WORK PROGRAM?
SKILLS NEEDED IN THE BS SOCIAL WORK COURSE
The ability to listen carefully, ask pertinent questions and retain verbally transmitted information is vital to the counseling aspect of social work.
The ability to recognize body language, social cues, implications and cultural patterns of behavior.
The ability to relate effectively and sensitively to different people of all ages and walks of life.
Since you will deal with different types of people, there will be times when problems and issues are the same and repetitive, this can become stressful over
long periods of time therefore you need to be tolerant to survive this course.
The ability to identify with or vicariously experience another person's situation.
The people that you will encounter may not always be open, cooperative and eager to share with you their problems so being patient is a very important trait
that you must possess
Maintain the capacity to set boundaries and accept the limits of what can be accomplished during a specified period of time.
You may be dealing with a heavy caseload, and so time management, clear note taking, and a logical filing system are important to help you maximize the amount
of time

SW 101 – INTRODUCTION TO SOCIAL WORK
This course will provide students the basic or foundations- Knowledge, Attitude and Skills (KAS). The knowledge Foundation
of the profession runs with the local and international history and developments of practice and theories, intervention or
approaches in interventions or approaches in intervening in the lives of clients either individual, group or community.
SW 102 – PHILIPPINE SURVEY OF SOCIAL PROBLEMS
The very existence of the profession lies in social problems evident in the Philippine Setting. Social Problems cause
dysfunction. This course attempts to do a close examination of current issues that beset the Filipinos. The result of such
analysis and their implications to sustainable development serve as a springboard in drawing up conclusion and in giving
recommendations on basic changes among Filipinos and institutional structure
SW 103 – SOCIAL CASEWORK
The course introduces the student to Social Casework as a method in helping individuals in various social situations and
circumstances, it covers the components of social casework, most specially the helping process and how the tools, skills
and techniques of Social Work are applied.
SW 104 – SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY
Psychology is one of the Social Work profession’s major fields because it studies the bio-psychosocial being or the client’s
(individual, group, or community) Social Psychology is a more comprehensive study of the client in relation to others. Its
major concern is interaction. Also students will learn more about themselves. This would help students and future potential
clients in improving social life.
SW 105 – HUMAN DEVELOPMENT PSYCHOLOGY
This is a course which deals with the various changes that takes place in human development. One focus of this course is
the child development and adolescent’s establishment of an identity or resolution of identity crisis. Various practices as
well as the influence are likewise included in order to have a deeper understanding of their behavior. The period of adulthood
(from early to late period) is tackled.
SW 106 – SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ECOLOGY
This course involves the microscopic study as it relates to human affairs. It attempts to study the relationship of man in
the context of the world. The focus of this course is on the study of questions that is related to population, environment
in order for the students to be informed and convinced about the elements and dimensions of the environmental crisis.
As an output they may be able to contribute some measures that may help to brighten the prospects of mankind.
SW 107 – GROUP PROCESSES AND DYNAMICS
Group Processes and Dynamics is one of the primary methods of Social Work Profession. It sees a group as one of the
opportunity of transform client/s through the use of purposive activities and change their views or improve their different
skills. The subject is designed to further investigate the individual’s behavior towards group identity and group processes

SW 109 – SOCIAL WORK AND THE LAW
Social Welfare Policies, Programs and Services (SWPPS) is one of the substantive knowledge of Social Work Practice. Social
Work students are to be equipped with the basic principles why laws exist, for who these laws are and how to implement
such laws. This could help them identify what will be there stand and to achieve being an others- centered oriented
individuals and professionals. This major subject will make students familiarize with what are the basic privileges and rights
of the different sectors (future clients). This will later open avenues for advocacy at their own and different levels.
SW 110 – DEVIATIONS IN HUMAN BEHAVIOR
This course attempts to identify and trace the causes of behavior deviations as well its contributing factors. The
management of the behaviors is likewise taken up.
SW 111 – SOCIAL WELFARE POLICIES AND PROGRAMS
Analysis of Social welfare policies, programs and services of different stakeholders and institutions in the public and private
sectors such as government agencies, non- governmental organizations, people’s, organizations, faith-based organizations,
corporate foundations and their implications to social work practices.
SW 112 – SOCIAL SERVICES AND RELATED DISCIPLINES
Social Work Profession has its distinct features however it has still borrowed many of its concepts, theories, models and
interventions from other disciplines in order to help people. In this subject, these concepts and details of other related
disciplines will be emphasized in order to define the boundaries and still integrate in the practice of the profession.
SW 113 – COMMUNITY ORGANIZING
Community Organizing as a method of Social Work covers the values, concepts, theories, principles, processes, approaches
and skills required an initial community organizing process. It will be considered in relation to community development,
social planning and social action. Social realities and emerging trends will also be included.
SW 114 – SOCIAL WORK ADMINISTRATION AND SUPERVISION
The course is a theoretical and practical perspective of the monetary and credit system and banks in the Philippine
environment; central & commercial banking institutions’ behavior and policies; financial development and markets and the
interaction of these with the domestic & external sectors of the economy.
SW 115 – SOCIAL WORK IN ORGANIZATION
The course deals with various social services that could be extended to the personnel, workers or employees of an
industry or business. The course gives insight of what are the basic rights and privileges of employees. Also, employees
should comprehend the role and duties of the employers. With these pieces of information at hand, the student will be in
a better situation to intervene in the business world.
SW 11 – SOCIAL WORK RESEARCH
This course covers the fundamentals of Social research, appreciation for the utilization for the improvement of Social Work
practice and its development. It is focused on the importance of social work and it includes general knowledge of of the
concepts, processes and methods of social work research.
ELECT 101 – NON- FORMAL EDUCATION / SOCIAL WORK COMMUNITY EDUCATION & TRAINING
In contrast with formal education or pedagogy, non-formal education or andragogy tackles concepts which are very useful
in primary methods: group work and community organizing. Students are taught to formulate their own training design,
strategies, development and conduct of Social work community education and training activities in the context of building
capacities of peoples organizations
ELECT 2 – HEALTH EDUCATION AND APPLIED NUTRITION
This deals with specific diseases, causes, prevention, control and dietary needs of nutritional problems and their solution
through effective measures and community action.
ELECTIVE 3 – CRISIS MANAGEMENT AND GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING
This course deals with the basic orientation and proper process in handling critical, stressful and traumatic situations and
helping those victims heals and overcome such situations.
SW 117 – FIELD PRACTICE I
The focused of this placement is working individuals by managing caseloads in an institution setting. It aims to prepare
the students for beginning competencies in problem solving, documentation and resources identification, utilization and
mobilization, development of self-awareness and identification with the professionals along with the development of
Christian Values attitudes. This requires the completion of four hundred (400) hours
SW 118 – FIELD PRACTICE II
This is course aims to deepen the integration of social work knowledge, attitude and skills acquired by the students in
previous field experience. It emphasizes on working skills acquired by the students in previous field experience. It emphasizes
on working with individuals in groups and working groups, use the programs for group development and mobilization of
resources within and outside the agency, demonstration and documentation of group processes. This requires the
completion of three hundred (300) hours..
SW 119 – FIELD PRACTICE III
Involves beginning competence in community problem solving process, resource mobilization, and utilization and
leadership development. This course aims to develop competence of the students in enhancing the capability of the
people in the community in coping with problems in their community. This requires the completion of three hundred
(300) hours.
