2. • Visits to Romania are considered safe, but please consider the following recommendations:
• Maintain at least the same level of personal security awareness as in your country
• The state of alert in Romania ended at midnight on 9 March 2022. All restrictions related to COVID-19 were
lifted, although mask-wearing is still encouraged
• The terrorist alert status in Romania is BLUE – CAUTIOUS ( low risk of a terrorist attack)
• Make sure all your valuables are safe at all times
• Carry your passport at all times
• Hold your bag in front of you and avoid backpacks or shoulder bags
• It is illegal to change money in the streets. You should change money only in authorized exchange shops, banks
and hotels
• DO NOT display large amount of money or other values
• Avoid certain areas in Bucharest at night (especially around the North Rail Station)
• Pay attention to thieves (pickpockets operate in public places, restaurants, public transport and, sometimes, in
places of worship) and strangers who may approach you asking for money
• If driving in Romania, make sure you have with you all documentation, including your full, valid driving license,
proof of insurance/green card, proof of ID(passport) and proof of vehicle rental
• It is illegal to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Drunk driving has ZERO tolerance in Romania
• DO NOT smoke inside the buildings, restaurants, offices, vehicles. Smoking is allowed in the designated places
only ( open space)
• Drugs and prostitution are illegal
• It is recommended to use buses, trams, trolleybuses, car sharing for your private travel
• If you use taxicabs, check the fare before getting in and ask the driver to start the fare meter. Survey the meters
during the trip.
• Ask for ID and Badge of any ununiformed individual who might introduce himself as a policeman and attempt
to exercise such duties in relation to you.
• In case of an incident or emergency, CONTACT THE EMERGENCY SERVICES. There is only one [1] general
emergency number in Romania to call for assistance: police (112), fire (112) and ambulance (112). If you are in
an emergency situation and need to call 112, follow the steps indicated on the back of your ITU photo badge

Romania became independent in 1878. It joined the Allied Powers in World War I. In 1940, Romania allied with the Axis powers and participated in the 1941 German invasion of the USSR. Three years later, overrun by the Soviets, Romania signed an armistice.
1947-80’s, Romania was a Soviet let country with the "people's republic" being established with a Communist dictator Nicolae CEAUSESCU, CEAUSESCU ruling until he was overthrown and executed in late 1989. Former Communists dominated the government until 1996 when they were swept from power.
Romania joined NATO in 2004 and the EU in 2007.
